Wonderful as this performance may be, I feel I must point out that the version heard here -- and on several other recordings -- is that made after Kurt Weill's death for his widow Lotte Lenya to perform (and record). All of Anna I's music is transposed down a fourth, making for a much darker sound -world to the piece. As a means by which Lenya could once again sing the role she had created over a quarter century earlier, when her vocal range was significantly higher, this was surely acceptable, but its subsequent adoption by others, including the estimable Ms. May, has really significantly distorted our understanding of Weill's superb score.

I first heard this work back in the 70s, a French group conducted by Charles Dutoit--I love that record. Now this version has gone to my heart too. Wonderful actors, great players--love that bassoon.
