Taking its first flight in December 1988, the An-225 "Mriya," meaning "dream" in Ukrainian, was built during Soviet rule by the Kyiv-based Antonov Company for the purpose of carrying the USSR's Buran spacecraft - just as the Boeing 747 did in the US with NASA's Space Shuttle.

Ukraine assembled it, because the entire glider was manufactured in Russia and sent to Ukraine for assembly. Russia produced twice as many AN-124s as Ukraine, and a factory was created from scratch for it.

@Manhoid4 күн бұрын
@@risksrewardsrelics51 It was built at a plant in Kyiv, while many of its components were produced at other factories of Soviet Union, even an aircraft plant in Uzbekistan participated. Soviet Union could create such aircraft, but independent Ukraine is completely incapable of this. One proof: when the USSR collapsed, Ukraine was left with an unfinished An-225, and for 30 years Ukraine was unable to do anything with it. So we can dream as much as we want, our dreams will not make new An-225 a reality, because decades of degradation of production culture in Ukraine, breakdown of Soviet scientific ties and supply chains, as well as Russia's banal unwillingness to participate in this project, all this puts an end to any attempts to even finish building a partially finished aircraft, much less a completely new aircraft. It's sad, but nothing can be done about it.

I think they are very old airplanes that should be banned from flying in European airspace. Come on, we all know they are carrying weapons to Ukraine which is ok, but it should be done with safer and more modern airplanes.
@MariktheWolf6 күн бұрын
they are perfectly safe...as long as they are maintained and have good pilots...by the definition laid out in the above comment no old aircraft should be permitted to fly...like a P-51 or a Saab Viggen...

There's still 30 plus year old Boing passenger planes still flying in Europe and the US? Boeing 747, 767? 737-300, 400, 500? MD-11, many many aircraft! Most of the US long range bomber fleet are over 50 years old? B52?? The Antonov is a perfectly safe and well maintenance and performing airplane ✈️

As far as I know, the weapons are transported on land, the airspace is only used by missiles, drones and fighters. The cargo airline makes its money by hauling stuff between other countries.

Anatov is a Ukrainian name and it’s Ukrainian aircraft, not Russian. The Russian examples are cold war left overs.
@aadvert3 күн бұрын
You should at least write something real, not made up. Antonov is a purely Russian surname. Oleg Antonov was born in 1906 near Moscow, in a purely Russian family. In 1912, the family moved to live near Saratov. After graduating from the institute, he worked for a long time in the Yakovlev Design Bureau, then worked in the branch of the design bureau in Tyumen, from where in 1952 he moved with the entire branch to Kyiv. He was never Ukrainian, neither by nationality nor by surname. AN-124, AN-124-100 - this is a Soviet aircraft, a total of 55 units were built, 17 of which were in Ukraine, the remaining 38 units in Russia. Read before you write!
