So well done Graham. All that dedication to training paid off! I did the 25k (inspired by your video last year) and that was quite tough enough for me but very grateful for the advice to take 3 litres of water. I would never have got around on the mandatory one litre, even though it was not quite as hot this year! I hope you feel proud of your achievement!
@grahammethold4 ай бұрын
That’s great to hear! Even up to the last moment, I was undecided re water capacity. Water is heavy. Having run in rain for 4 months it is easy to forget how much water one gets through on a hot race. However 2l of capacity was definitely the right choice, even though I only filled up 1.5l at the start. Having that extra flexibility to load up with more water en route was invaluable and the water filter was a great buy. It just gives you that confidence to push on knowing you always have a plentiful supply of water. Purification tablets are good too but I just found that the taste of anything artificial was really off putting near the mid/end of the race. Many congratulations for completing the 25km - some of the comments remind me how boggy and hot the section after the checkpoint is. And, yes, I am proud!

Well done.. I actually “ran” next to you for about 10/15 minutes after CP 3 going up the field, but unfortunately my stomach had long since stopped accepting calories so I was going slow and deep in my nauseous pain cave.. and you looked like you was battling some demons too.. I’d actually given up on the idea of getting in on time, but somewhere going up moel ellio, even though I’d sat down to ease come calories in, I made up some time, and got down the valley with a good pace, and got in at 21:39.. couldn’t believe I’d made it! Very emotional and drained finish.. sat there for a long time taking in some calories, and clapping some others in.. Not going back the 100k just yet though 😂

Well done. It sounds as if we all went through it on those last couple of hills. What an experience, eh?! Once I crested Mynydd Mawr I was fairly certain I was going to make it, as I remembered from my recce that Moel Elio is not a 4 hr trek. That said, I hadn’t taken into account the long run home so it was perhaps tighter than I had anticipated and I’m glad I kept going.

Personally, I'd take at least 1.5 litres of water. I'm doing the 55 and I'm taking 2 litres. It's going to be hot. Nothing derails a race quicker than dehydration. Each to their own but an extra litre is only 1kg. Last year I volunteered on aid station 12. Most participants DNFd due to dehydration.

@SimonBransfieldGarth5 ай бұрын
@@grahammethold Not sure if you have seen the Precision Hydration online calculator (free). They also do a free 20 minute video consultation. I sweat a lot and it turns out the amount of electrolyte I need is massively more that you get from a few crisps / electrolyte gels etc. Anyway, long story short I tried it last week on the Beast of the Blacks and it seemed to make a huge difference to that mid race sinking/soggy legs feeling which I have been struggling with for years, so might be interesting if you find the same thing. Definitely needs to be tried out well before race day though! (and no, I am not sponsored by them, I am sure other brands are available :-)
@grahammethold5 ай бұрын
That’s really helpful - thanks. I did a “sweat test” last summer in the heat and lost 1.4 litres in one hour! In more moderate conditions this March I was still 1 litre down in weight after 1 hour of running. So hydration and electrolytes could be key.

Great video! I did the UTS 55k last year and I'm doing the UTS 100k this year. I actually found my poles were vital on the downhills (even more than the uphills), and saved me from falling a few times. I definitely found I was more confident, faster and had increased stability when going downhill with my poles, so perhaps it's worth practising with them downhill in case you also feel the same? All the best with your training.
@grahammethold5 ай бұрын
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I suppose I was thinking about parts of the course where you need to free up you hands to scramble down rocks. But, yes, there are lots of downhill sections where poles are useful. I guess that's the advantage of using a quiver - easy access so you can choose when to use them. All the best with the 100k. I hope the training is going well!

Do you have the Salomon adv 12? If so you can buy a quiver which clips on to the vest, makes it easier to get poles in and out 😊

I do have the Salomon Adv 12. I think I will buy a quiver. Today I went on a long run with the poles strapped where they were in the video but the cinches kept coming loose. I thought that the quiver was more expensive than it is but £30 seems reasonable.

Nice run. If you’re not doing the first half with south ridge, the steepness of mydd mwr was a surprise.. admittedly I was knackered when I saw it, but Google earth, which was the only way I could recce it last year, was much steeper than expected. Think the path leading to it is a quagmire in any weather less than a few weeks of dry though.
@jamstaa696 ай бұрын
What’s you’re experience with the seal skins, and damp hands? I’ve had issues getting gloves on once my hands are damp, and I’m sure I’ve heard similar issues with the seal skins because they’re already quite grippy inside? Yeah all of my so called waterproof gloves have caused some kind of issue at some point. Agree with the down hill.. always found it difficult, whilst others are flying down. But I tend to try to look after my quads as well.
@grahammethold6 ай бұрын
The seal skinz I took to Snowdon got very wet inside because I kept taking the gloves off to film. As you say they became very sticky inside and were difficult to put on and off. But next Snowdon recce I have waterproof sealskinz mittens with a touch sensitive finger which should mean I don't have to take the gloves off. Let's see.

Great vid.. shame the views weren’t better. I’m glad the race doesn’t follow all the way up the Watkins path.. I’d like to know more about the beginning of the south ridge, thinking about doing it as part of my one planned recce.. I remember a bit of a queue, and was sure if I just climbed up, I’d get around the queue, but didn’t want to risk it. Lost a good few minutes. Flipping a coin on the recce route.. either this kind of loop, or head over to do the mydd Mawr, can’t remember how to spell it, and do the only section I don’t know because I timed out, between cp3 and the base of moel ellio, ascent.
@jamstaa696 ай бұрын
UTS55, be afraid, be very afraid 😂 I timed out last year at cp3, doing it again to correct my mistakes, but it was tough, since then I’ve done a similar ultra in Wales up and around Snowdon, and have now done Lullworth ultra, and even with every step being a slip and a slide covered in mud, UTS was still more tiring. But can’t wait for May! Really looking forward to it. Crossing fingers for nice weather again. Well done on Lulworth.. I’ve done the half a few times and it’s a nice route, the marathon and ultra route take on a much steeper second half.. and I have to say this year was the hardest, it’s never been that muddy for me before over the past 4 or so years. All the way around I was regularly thinking if I’ll get out of the car out of that field. 😅 Good luck for the rest of your training

Last year's heat made it particularly tough. I suspect that this year a lot of people will be packing a water bladder or extra bottle, just in case!! If you made it to 40k in that heat, I'm sure you will complete it this year. Out of interest, approx how much elevation are you doing each week? I'm going around 1,000m per week which is about all I can get in but not sure whether that is good/ bad or indifferent? See you at the start line!
@jamstaa696 ай бұрын
@@grahammethold yeah I have experience, and proceeded to make bad choices on the day, didn't fill up my third bottle for the South ridge, and fell off nutrition, and sat at cp2 to take on water and nutrition, charge watch, for too long, I've never stayed at check point before, I'm not fast enough for the luxury 😂 Last time I was doing 3 normal runs, a long run and one gym session where I was getting the elevation on a treadmill, doing about a 1000m of run/power hike.. think I needed two sessions of that instead of just one. Living in Wales I hike quite a bit so hoping with a bit of running that will get me through ! Watched your video from last year any tips you took away from your experience ?
@grahammethold7 ай бұрын
Two main tips (1) if it is looking like it is going to be warm, think about how much water you will need. For me, it was nearly 3 hrs (up and down Snowdon) to the first checkpoint and I only took 1 litre with me. Nowhere near enough on a hot day. There were no water stops on the way. I should have taken more for that section. I subsequently did a "sweat test" in the summer and worked out that I sweat 1.4l of water an hour on a hot day! It was unusually hot last year, though, so hopefully less of a problem this year. (2) Keep moving. If you are tired or need to eat/drink, just keep the legs turning over. Easy to lose lots of time looking at the views or in checkpoints! Have fun and see you there!

Hey Graham. You're probably not needing advice, but for good downhill training nearby, the ravine behind Silent Pool is good (also good uphill training!) and looping up the stair side and down the grassy bank at Box Hill is also good, with a bit of recovery run around the bottom back to the stairs. Good luck at UTS.
