On July 19, 1951 manager Durocher told the Giants they would begin stealing signs with a telescope and buzzer system. Thomson hit .231 in the first half of 1951, .358 in the second half. Thomson swore he didn't look for the sign when he hit the game-winning home run. Anybody believe him?

I like the way that priest helped Ralph Branca to mentally deal with having to be on the losing end of the Shot Heard 'Round The World. We all have our crosses to bear, and apparently, that was his. I also like how there is a picture of him and Bobby Thomson hanging out together as they got older. I guess time heals all wounds.

Branca didn't always control himself. He hit Thomson with a pitch in an old timers' game. That was after he'd learned that not only Thomson's home run, but also the Giants' exceptional stretch run that caused the playoff, had been assisted by illegal sign stealing from the center field clubhouse signaled to the batter from the right field bullpen. Branca, who became an insurance salesman after baseball, was quite successful at that because his name was well known, and he profited from the publicity he got from many co-appearances with Thomson over many years. They had been friends, driving around the country in the same car after the end of one season in the 1940's, when they played together on a barnstorming exhibition baseball tour. But Branca did not forgive Thomson for covering up the whole sordid business and never admitting what Durocher's Giants had done. Strange that Howard Cosell, who narrated the program from which the video above is drawn, never told it like it is about this iconic event, for he was also close to Branca. I think that MLB, which was not prosperous in the 1950's, knew that the Giants' 1951 season gave the fans of all the mediocre MLB teams (ie almost all of them) cause for hope that their team could salvage a pennant after a perfectly mediocre start, and the legendary events thereby kept a good fraction of the 2 leagues in business. Professional baseball is like the hot dog you eat there; you don't want to know how it's made.

Wow, what a goldmine! I'm a shirt-tail relative of Tommy, and met him (as a child) in 1959. I always have kicked myself that I didn't really listen to his baseball stories then. These videos more than make up for that. Thank you so much for them!

I just looked at his site. He raced at Tunnel Hill, GA. This is where me and my Dad used to race all the time. There's a picture on his site of him on the track. My Dad passed away on 9/9/24, I have VHS video of us racing on the track. I miss him dearly, thank you for documenting this, it means a lot to me.

It's very sad that this is the only video about John Cena's grandfather, since he was a prominent athlete at the time. I hope a documentary is made so that his triumphs are not forgotten. He deserves it.

Thank you. Bobo and my dad were Washington teammates on several occasions. My dad always said that Bobo was a natural comedienne- One year, in the dining car on a Washington road trip. Bobo entertained the players with his imitation of a "fire and brimstone" preacher! He also had a great sense of humor! He once asked one of theWashington rookies if he had change for a ten. The rookie said "sure" so Bobo pulled out a $10,000 bill!

Hmmm. I'm thinking that the first clip of Colavito looks like he's in home whites and the catcher is in visiting grays. Also, it appears that the old English "D" is not there on his uniform but rather a script, likely "Tigers" as they wore on home unis for only one year in 1960.
