It’s so interesting to listen to radio broadcast because firstly, in 1939. It’s like you know what is on the cusp. And then when they keep mentioning September 11, you’re like oh that’s not a good date… I felt the same way when they were talking about hosting Amelia Earhart in one of the previous shows in 37 and then them delaying her performance because she was lost. It’s so crazy to hear these types of news stories.

I like it that Powell can sing. Especially as a private detective. His character is funny too.

Great episode! I wish someone could explain the Mrs. Roosevelt joke about someone returning from North Africa. I’m sure that was a running gag at the time but out of curiosity I would like to know.

What goes around comes around. The professor committed a murder and fate got him when he sent the car over the cliff with the doctor’s instruments that could save him.

As heard on Fridays at 9:30pm(et). Not only is Herbert Marshall absent, Felix Mills' orchestra is also missing, replaced with a cheaper organ accompaniment by Milton Charles.

Ranger Bill’s mother is mentioned a lot on the program, but I don’t think she makes too many appearances on the episodes of the Ranger Bill series.

It is nice not to have the cigarette commercials every few minutes. I don't know if the poster is editing them or that is how he gets them but I appreciate it. Thanks for posting. I have been binge listening for the past 4 days and am near the end of the dragnet episodes. Then I will be listening to other series from your channel. I was a child when radio was big and I enjoy listening to these programs while quilting. Thanks.

Note the pronunciation of Xylophone as “Zill-a-phone”. Not “Zy-la-phone”. Not sure if that was the pronunciation of the time or a joke.

“So and so ….killed Vaudeville“ was a running joke for so many years in the entertainment industry. The irony is is that it was radio that truly killed Vaudeville.
