The tension is even higher than you think - it's subtle but in this scene George and Mary haven't seen each other in a LONG time, at least a few months but maybe two years? Besides maybe short conversations here and there, when she's back from school. She mentions that she's been taking vacations (multiple) in New York, and the entire conversation frames George lassoing the moon as though that's where they left off. She was in high school at that time and now she's done with college. I'm guessing 2 years. Mary says she got back "Tuesday" so George has now been fighting the urge to see her for several days. When he says "you're supposed to have all the answers" that's anger about her leaving for school. George is angry at his powerlessness - he finds himself unable to stay away from a girl who doesn't seem to care about him much at all - if she cared, why would she leave for so long? Even taking breaks in New York. And it annoys him even worse when everyone including his mother can see how weak he is when it comes to Mary, to the point that they can predict where he's going. It is only worse then when he sees Mary in the dress with the record and the portrait because to him its like after two years he's just supposed to pick up as though nothing ever happened? But fortunately his desire for her overwhelms his self-pity. What George can't see is that it means a lot that Mary is remembering all this after two years - absense has only made her heart grow fonder and solidified to her that George was not just some childhood crush but indeed a good man and she is certain now that she wants to give herself to him - in a way that she couldn't be certain had she just stayed in Bedford Falls. Mary has seen the world and no man has been able to better this memory she has of a moonlit walk with George. George has been strong in Bedford Falls but realizes the one exception to his strength is this girl who when she's around he can't stay away. He is defeated. That's how you get - after two years apart - a proposal with no questions asked, and no "dating" or whatever. Because in those two years it became clear to both of them that they are hopelessly trapped by their desire for one another. It was a different world. This sort of romance was not uncommon at that time, but today it is (almost) impossibly rare.

That the most romantic scene ever when he is trying to talk himself out of loving her and breaks down crying knowing he cant deny how much he needs her.

The one detail I love is George in the living room, hat in hand, watching Mary talk to Sam. He looks defeated. On some level, he wants to be like Sam: out of Bedford Falls, living in the big city, and following his dreams. In the moment he realizes he's prob going to lose Mary to a version of the man he wants to be. That's also why he looks so downtrodden when he leaves the house too.

This is the best romantic/sexually charged scene in the history of TV and film. I'll die on this hill.

I’m 37 and first saw this maybe 2 years ago (I’ve seen thousands of films at this point) and knew this one was long overdue. When I saw this phone scene, I was definitely not expecting it to be so intimate, intense and insanely romantic. The acting of tension is suburb. The end always makes me cry ugly. There’s just a range of emotions in one film and I think that’s what stands the test of time for so many. You have drama, romance, comedy, and fantasy rolled into one.

I was at a client 20 years ago and engaging in a bit of self-deprecating talk over lunch when the accountant whose work I was auditing snapped: “Who the hell said you’re weird?” The table froze…most of all myself…and it took me 9 years to realize the heart behind her scolding. She would have been a great mother of my children… God help me never to treat the ladies in my life with disrespect.

Its A Wonderful Life is not only the greatest Christmas movie ever made, its the greatest Christian movie this side of The Passion. This movie shows us how wonderful a true Christian society can be. And then Its A Wonderful Life shows you the flipside, which we live in Pottersville.

Its sad how many people reacting to this masterpiece cant understand why George is acting like this. Why Mary would still want him after his crass attitude

This would’ve been George Bailey’s once in a lifetime opportunity to have a fulfilling life on his own by traveling and leaving Bedford Falls. But instead, he fell in love with Mary and stayed there. Is it true that the things we already have in life is much better than the plans, goals and ambitions that we make in our lives? I guess if George Bailey had made the decision to travel, many people around him that he has known and love will suffer from the hands of Potter. Love got the best of George. I guess it’s true that you’re heart will always get the best of you’re head.

Gosh it’s just so beautiful. I was born in ‘94 but this movie always brings tears to my eyes. I know historically and politically times were terrible back then, but gosh darn it look at the flowers, look at her dress, the music, the slang, his suit, how they talk, its just all awfully pretty, IAh!

If you remember in the beginning of the movie it was said that goerge gave his college money to harry his brother, so it was only fitting that goerge, made his own destiny in being there when mary returned home from college, thats what all the frustration that goerge kept built up in him , and let it all out in this scene! Very touching moment!

Sad story There was this girl that I met at my trade school that was in another class that sadly liked me for one week, when we first met the first few times we talked she had the same look as Mary did to George in the movie. Just lit up like a fire fly when she saw me, as Georges mother told George. Her eyes sparkled and her face lit up we went on one date a few days after we met. three days after that marking a week. She just didn’t seem to care for me anymore she never seemed enthusiastic to speak with me over social media. I never really saw her at school anymore but before that, it seems like she was always busy to hang out with me anytime afterwards. It sucks more than anything in the world because I thought the first date went perfect. The emotional pain a few days after I was holding on for hope Friday and Saturday I had let go. The emotional pain on Friday and Saturday was the worst emotional pain I’ve ever experienced, to make matters worse. This was my first date ever in my life I’m 19 years old. I never went on a date before my life. I never did anything with a girl romantically before night. Even two weeks later, I still have a very sour taste in my mouth from the whole experience. It sucks so much that my first date in my life had to last 1 week.
