@deathbyunicorn 9 күн бұрын
@@AllMediaReviewsPodcast Maybe you heard what Today I Caught the Plague became after they changed their name? They became The Kindred. I wouldn't say Lore is progressive metalcore cause there's no harsh vocals but their first EP Ms. Mary Mallon is progressive metalcore so Lore still has a bit of that influence to it. Lore is a very unique sounding album though. Art By Numbers isn't progressive metalcore either. They are most like the band Artificial Language if you've heard them. Art by Numbers is this neoclassical guitar-centric prog metal with clean vocals where the guitar leads are very busy and non-stop shred.

Cannot. Erase. - Tool - Aenima - Strapping Young Lad - Alien

I lost interest in checking your ranking as soon as you ranked 15th Fugazi and 11th Marillion debut album Script for a Jester's Tear. The rest of the Fish era is also very low ranked. This is very disrespectful for such a great band in their origins. Unfortunately in all these bunch of years with Hogarth they have lost identity, personality and authenticity, they have had only flashes with some great songs of the great band they were back in their origins. Even their Marillion logo has lost its identity since the second album in the Hoghart era.

I have over 1,000 Cd's and I was fortunate I had friends who were handy as hell and built me nice shelves for my music room. I am at about 850 albums and I just started about 5 years ago - collecting again. DVDs/Blu Rays I have slowed down on because of streaming accessibility but probably have close to 750 or so. I have heard about 3 songs by Pepe Deluxe - is there an album I should try first?

hey, thanks for the comment! I suspect my collection is pretty similar in numbers, although I started collecting Vinyl more or less when I met my wife in 2011. You're lucky to have had your friends to help with the shelves. Part of it is just physical space, and where mine are kept is also in the same room where my wife's so we don't really have enough room for all of the shelving we would like. Perhaps the next home we buy will though. As for Pepe Deluxe, their album from 2012 "Queen of the Wave" is often considered their best (and I have a huge love for it). Although as I've come to learn, their other records are more schizophrenic and diverse. Queen of the Wave is probably their most pop/rock song-oriented album.

The Journey box set sounds cool but I never heard it. I didn't love the Porcupine Tree release from 92 but I guess I'd put it at number 11 cause it's still ok. A bit too average and basic for me to love it even though I love Porcupine Tree.

@@AllMediaReviewsPodcast yes and I assume Metropolis Pt. 2 is the most common #1 for 1999 among prog fans too though maybe there's some competition from Opeth and Spock's Beard that year. Nice picks Kyle! When I look at my 15 favourites for the year, I feel like the theme for 1991 is clearly "this is not that band's best work but it's still decent" cause that statement applies to every album on my list. Here's my 15 current favourites (I probably should have included some others you mentioned like Guns N Roses, but I find them quite overrated, Ozzy Osbourne and Marillion): Mr. Bungle Mr. Bungle Blood Sugar Sex Magik Red Hot Chili Peppers Metallica Metallica Innuendo Queen Sailing the Seas of Cheese Primus Parallels Fates Warning Union Yes Angel Rat Voivod The Tea Party The Tea Party We Can't Dance Genesis Heaven's Open Mike Oldfield Roll the Bones Rush Contradictions Collapse Meshuggah Kerplunk Green Day Catfish Rising Jethro Tull For band's like U2 and REM, I feel like some of their songs are okay but I get so bored listening to an entire album by them and find them both quite overrated. I've heard good things about Savatage and Fish but must admit, I've never listened to any of their albums.
@AllMediaReviewsPodcast
@AllMediaReviewsPodcast Ай бұрын
i think you are mostly right about 1991 being a year without a Peak or Best records. Although some do consider Parallels their best record, its hardly clear-cut. I would put Pearl Jam's Ten as their best, but I don't really care for most of their other records, so it doesn't really mean much from me. But many people do consider it their best. Achtung Baby generally is considered 1 of, but not necessarily the best U2 album. REM and U2 some do find boring, or think they are overrated. I guess I used to, but especially with U2, they eventually won me over. I think it largely had to do with hearing Dream Theater's U2 covers and then some of their U2-influenced songs, that had me reassess much of their music. As for Savatage and Fish..I could definitely see you enjoying some of Savatage's albums, although Streets maybe not as much as some of their others like Edge of thorns or Hall of the Mountain King (or my personal favorite, Handful of Rain which includes a masterpiece in arrangement and layering on the track "Chance."). Fish, I guess it depends on your take on his work with Marillion. You may want to check out 1 of his later records "Raingods with Zippos" which features an epic/suite "Plague of Ghosts" that includes the services of Steven Wilson.

They actually do list this album's hidden tracks, just not on the back cover. Instead they're on the CD tray liner, only visible after you take the CD out. Since it's three full songs, plus an intro and outro track, I like to think of it as a throwback to the occasions in the LP era when bands would include a bonus EP with their album just for the heck of it (like the first edition of _154_ by Wire). The funny thing about "Girl!" is that they sampled the vocals from "Girl You Cheated on Me" by The Presidents... and somehow this was enough for the copyright courts to rule that the owners of the Presidents' back catalogue were entitled to _all_ the royalties from "Girl!" That right there is why Pepe Deluxé don't use use external samples anymore.

Interesting points Kyle. You covered lots of bands! Here are my thoughts on them: Ones you mentioned who I love and think all their albums are masterpieces: 1. Haken 2. Caligula’s Horse 3. Tool Ones you mentioned who I love but aren’t perfect to me: 1. Big Big Train: I agree they sound a lot like Genesis. 2. Radiohead: I agree they’re overrated by critics and fans. 3. Symphony X: I think most of their albums are masterpieces but I agree some lyrics are cheesy and they have that power metal vocal style. 4. Ayreon: I agree about the cheesiness and the lyrics being a bit too dialogue-driven. 5. Moon Safari 6. Bear Ghost: I try not to let a controversy take away my enjoyment of music especially if the band member involved was removed. But I get your concern and there are some artists whose personal/criminal lives made me refuse to listen to them going forward though like R Kelly and now I’m not listening to any P Diddy. 7. Foo Fighters: I love Dave Grohl as a songwriter, frontman, singer, guitar player and drummer even though he’s not the most technically great at all those things, he’s well rounded, he’s having a good time making music and he writes excellent songs. 8. Eidola 9. Astronoid 10. Riverside 11. Voivod: They are kind of hit or miss but when they hit they’re excellent and they’re unique. Ones you mentioned who I like but don’t love: 1. Circa Survive 2. Neal Morse and Neal Morse Band: I agree the Christian themes are a bit too overt and slightly taint the music. My favourite stuff with Neal is also his Spock’s Beard and Transatlantic stuff. 3. Explosions in the Sky: Everything I’ve heard from them is good to very good but I don’t think they have a masterpiece album or even the potential to make one in the future and it all kind of sounds the same to me. 4. The Pineapple Thief: Everything I’ve heard from them is very good and even some of it’s excellent but I don’t think they have the potential to make a masterpiece cause it’s all pretty safe, vanilla and samey music. 5. Of Montreal: I haven’t listened to their full discography but the stuff I heard is good. 6. Vampire Weekend: I think their album from this year is very good but not excellent. Based on some other bands you like, I figured you’d like their newest album at least. 7. Grizzly Bear: Haven’t heard all their stuff yet though. 8. Rishloo: Haven’t heard all their stuff yet but I’ve heard some good things about them and am interested to hear more cause I think they have potential to make a masterpiece. 9. The Flower Kings 10. Cave In Ones I totally agree are very “meh”/average based on what I’ve heard: 1. Asia: Meh. What I’ve heard from them is generic and poppy but it’s catchy and well made. I haven’t heard all their stuff though. 2. Fleet Foxes: Meh. What I’ve heard from them is very average but not bad. I haven’t heard all their stuff though. 3. Arcade Fire: Meh. What I’ve heard from them is good but not very good or too exciting so I think they’re overrated by critics and fans. 4. Taylor Swift: Meh. I agree with you. Everything she does, while not terrible sounding, is so average, basic and boring but she does have a handful of songs that are catchy guilty pleasure pop songs for me. I still don’t get why she’s one of the most popular musicians of our time cause she’s nothing special. 5. Swans: Meh. Some of their stuff is just good but not very good. I agree some of it sounds annoying. I think they’re overrated by critics and fans. For most of the others, I still need to hear more from them to form an opinion cause I’ve only heard a couple songs here and there rather than full albums.

thanks for the comment. I know you and many others enjoy many of these bands, or maybe like some of their music but also find them overrated. There's certain bands like Mastodon, who I do like, but find overrated overall. I actually could do more of these as there are more names, especially that I figured I would like, or can't get into (as opposed to just not caring enough about to get into..like some of the obscure bands like in Post Hardcore like HRVRD).
