This song had very deep meaning for Gram, hence the expression of intense emotion. He once said, "Everyone I love dies." The Reverend Dr. William Brace conducted the funeral for Gram's dad. I don't believe the song is about a wedding. It's actually about Gram.

Son plus bel instrumental à mon humble avis...Bowie a expliqué plus tard que ce morceau lui avait été inspiré par le Mur de Berlin et au fait que des familles étaient séparées...Ce qui est certain c'est que Berlin lui aura inspiré quelques unes de ses plus belles chansons...En ce qui me concerne,je suis particulièrement réceptive à ce Subterraneans...Je trouve cela vraiment magnifique!
