@biasedbullsfantv469 As you mentioned, blocks and steals were not official stats at the time of Wilt's alleged quintuple-double game in 1968. You stated that you did a lot of research into this. Did your research include Harvey Pollack, the premier statistician of the the era? Pollack was covering that game and he is the one who came up with those figures, which are quite likely accurate. It is highly likely that Wlt DID achieve a quintuple-double that game, although it cannot be officially recorded as such. While I am not normally one to overly laud Wilt Chamberlain and if I had to choose one all-time great to build a team around, it would be Bill Russell, neither Michael Jordan nor Lebron James come close to being the player that Wilt Chamberlain was.

On March 18, 1968 Wilt Chamberlain allegedly dropped an unofficial (blocks and steals weren't recorded until the 1973-74 season) quintuple double with 53 points, 32 rebounds, 14 assists, 24 blocks, and 11 steals. Harvey Pollack, Philadelphia's Director of Statistical Information, recorded the blocks and steals back then.

Wilt Chamberlain holds the record for most career double-doubles in the NBA with 968, Wilt Chamberlain's total games during his career; Wilt Chamberlain played in 1,045 games in his career. Just over 92% of wilts games were double-doubles Lets put that in perspective....if he made so many double-double its impossible for him not to have made a huge number of triple-doubles or better....blocks and steals were not counted in Wilts era, while modern assists favour the present players and not the Wilts era because they were judged differently....

sorry, this isn't a mystery. his game against phoenix where he blocked either 26 or 29 blocks? that was a number the PHOENIX'S coaching staff recorded...teams did often start keeping blocks and steals before it was an official stat. same goes with a game vs. detroit where he had like 24 blocks. also, long-time, well-respected statistician Harvey Pollack is the one who went back and watched game film to count up Wilt's blocked shots...i want to say it was 112 games he did that for, and yes, wilt AVERAGED 8.8 blocks per game for those 100+ games, of which a few were from the mid-60s, but mostly it was from later in wilt's career. lastly, i've also seen newspaper clippings where THEY note how many blocks wilt had (when it was a notable performance)...for instance, he had a game early in Kareem's career (when he was still lew alcindor) in which wilt had 19 blocks, including 5 alone vs. kareem. there are a couple of reddit threads where these articles are posted, as well as a page that illustrates his blocks. it's pretty monstrous.

If Wilt wanted to do something Wilt did it. I wouldn’t doubt any of the people that were giving estimates at that game. I’m sure he probably had more than what they estimated.

Max Pollack, who was the statistician for the game, maintained he did. As you pointed out, the points, rebounds, and assists statistics are verified facts. There is no reason to believe the statistician would harm his reputation by making up phony numbers. If you also realize that the NBA was played entirely differently before the advent of the three point line, makes those other two stats more credible. Since there was no incentive to take long shots (every basket was only worth 2 points), it made more sense to take shots closer to the basket. Since Wilt averaged 22.9 rebounds per game over his career, it seems reasonable to believe he could easily have a significant number of games in which he had 10+ blocked shots. He likely also would have a decent number of interceptions on errant passes with teams trying to "kick the ball back out." Getting 10+ in a number of games is not a huge stretch. Therefore, I have far more reason to believe it did happen than to believe it didn't.

It was a game where Elgin Baylor and Jerry West were out so Chamberlain could basically do as he pleased against the Lakers. Still impressive though. Wilt probably had somewhere in the neighborhood of 7000 blocks in his career, easily the highest of all time.

There are 8 times that the NBA recorded a quadruple double-double (40+ in 2 stats). The players were: 1. Wilt Chamberlain 2. Wilt Chamberlain 3. Wilt Chamberlain 4. Wilt Chamberlain 5. Wilt Chamberlain 6. Wilt Chamberlain 7. Wilt Chamberlain 8. Wilt Chamberlain

Actually Wilt nearly recorded a quadruple-double-double by today's assist criteria not only in the March 18, 1968 Laker game, but also in the Feb. 7, 1968 San Diego game: 21pts 21reb 18ast 21blk(neutral game in Boston, by the way).

The 24 blocks and 11 steals were estimates from people who attended the game and people who covered the NBA at the time." In other words, the identical EYEWITNESS testimony used in a court of law to prove a case. But in case those people aren't sufficient, the 53, 32, 16, 24, 11 was against the Los Angeles Lakers. Their 1968 roster included Jerry West and Elgin Baylor who were both inactive that day (March 18, 1968). Gail Goodrich, Archie Clark, Freddie Crawford, Mel Counts, Cliff Anderson, Baylor, and West ARE STILL ALIVE! So why don't you ask them? Oh! By the way, 7'0" Mel Counts guarded Wilt 28 of the 48 minutes.

Some great comments on this video. Yes he is the all time best defensive player. No official proof, but yes, he was more than capable of blocking more shots than Bill Russel, and probably did. Probably averaged 15, or more blocks per game for his career, not to mention altered shots, because of the intimidation factor. That is a lot of points that the opposing teams didn't get to score. Would the high flying dunkers have been hurt if Wilt, or, I'll give it, Bill Russel, were in the paint? I would say there would be a good chance of it. Prime to prime, that would include Jordan and James. Wilt could block a flying dunk at the apex, and with enough force against the ball to stop the shooter's upper body motion, which would take the shooter's feet from under him. I have seen that happen, on TV, real time, and on at least one one of these videos. Add his scoring and, I believe all time best, rebounding, and as Rick Barry stated, There isn't anybody else who even comes close to doing what Wilt could do, at both ends of the court.

If wilt the stilt was capable of scoring 100 points in a game then I truly believe that he had a quintuple double. Pete Maravich played an earlier part of his basketball career before the 3 point line even existed and he would’ve been averaging 11 threes made per game. It sounds crazy but it’s true. Wilt chamberlain being the beast he was in his prime if anyone could’ve done it it would’ve been wilt. Edit: grammar
@mr.research48114 жыл бұрын
Very true, and I also believe Bill Russell probably had a '66 playoff quintuple-double by today's assist interpretation(gotta get steal total from that game; so far I know he had numerous steals).
