That doesn’t look like a very good swing. The batter should be in a load position and then the swing should begin with a stride followed immediately by a pivot of the back leg. All the while the hands needs to remain elevated. This girls’s hands drop and she basically has no pivot. The video does make a very good point that the grip of the bat is the fundamental starting point. Also good is the emphasis on squaring up to the plate, however it should be emphasized that the feet need to be parallel and the stance neither open or closed.

I am in the 8th grade and on a varsity softball team. I have never played before and I am working on my hitting and just the basics and I can be good. And play my best. And I love the how it explains everything on a more basic level and understanding.

Unless I’m mistaken in this video the coach stated the first hole to the left of the center was the 3 hole which should actually be the 1 hole. The center (and not the centers feet) is considered to be 0. That would make all of the even plays (holes) to the right and odd plays to the left starting with both 2 and/or 1 respectively. Is this not true for youth football?

Linebacker stance is pretty easy to learn, how about teaching them to be able to read a run play and a pass play. Let's say if you're an outside Linebacker and you see your opponents QB get into shotgun and take 2 step backs then it's a pass, but I play inside linebacker so I usually take a step forward in case it's a run and then back pedal a few steps for a pass.

Why don't you do a video teaching that, I learned from this video because , I never played organized football l, so I appreciate it.

Taking 2 steps forward on a pass is a false step that could take you out of position to properly defend your zone. Eliminate false steps and trust your keys. Linebackers read lineman. A Qb steps dont matter. The lineman will tell you if its a run or pass

Great insight and great advice. It’s so easy for young athletes to give up after one bad play, but we need more coaches and people telling them that it’s ok and to just “reset”.

Great teaching for youth, the kids seem to be paying attention. Wide base is not what I would do. I'd say, legs loose/flexed, butt down, on the balls of your feet, glove down, throwing hand close by the glove hand. To be the best infielder or outfielder, you need to study the game. Know your pitcher, what he throws, where the catcher is set up behind the plate, who the batter is, is the batter aggressive or passive, where does the batter generally hit the ball, etc... the key thing on defense is to always be alert, study the game, and be aware of different situations that may occur. I'd say that is something lacking in youth baseball, fundamentals are not properly taught nowadays. I notice that at different tournaments I have seen recently. I hope many of these kids make it to high school, college, and/or pro baseball. Instill the love for the game, first and foremost. Strongly suggest to the kids, playing pick up baseball is extremely important and builds up the love/ and more quickly will get the fundamentals down. When I was growing up, baseball is ALL we did in the spring and summer.. pick up baseball in the morning and afternoon, then play for our teams in the evening. I wish any kid the best of luck in whatever they pursue, period...

Keep the hands close to the body... think of your strength toting a heavy object. You are a lot more capable of carrying that weight close to your chest, not out and away. Hands thru the zone, top to bottom, watch the ball from the pitchers hip, you’ll see it meet the bat. I tell my girls that the longer they see the ball, the slower it comes...
