Wouldn't he have been safer in Jerusalem? What made it dangerous for him to be in Babylon? Once taken captive to Babylon under Nebuchadnezzers's command, Daniel had no power to change his location. That is what the word “captive” means. He was TAKEN to Babylon, not of his own choice or power. It is stunning to me that people fail to comprehend the definition of basic vocabulary words. Even though the language in which the Book of Daniel was originally recorded was Hebrew, translations have been generally dependable in the English language, and certainly, Concordances and dictionaries are available to learn the meaning of the word. “captive”. At any rate, Daniel had no power to change his circumstances until Cyrus conquered Babylon and decreed the release of the Hebrew exiles to return, by choice, to Judea 70 years later. By that time Daniel was quite aged, and was determined useful in the administration of the new empire, thus he stayed on as an exile by choice. He was an instrument of Yahweh to provide many important prophetical declarations from, including the visions of chapter 7, 11, including the 70 weeks prophecy, which provided a timeframe by which God's people could expect the appearance of their long promised Messiah, for which reason many in Judea were “in expectation” in the days of Jesus’ birth, including the magi from the east. Have you ever wondered who these men were and how they knew to look for the birth of a long promised king of the Jews? They were not Jewish, but Gentile individuals who understood God's promises to His people, many of whom had remained in the land of their captivity, in the east. And they worshipped the child, this promised king, and brought him valuable gifts Daniel was a very special man of God, one of few to whom God promised that he would “stand in his lot” (chapter 12) at the end of days, i.e , the end of the times of the Gentiles, and the establishment of God's Kingdom upon earth. How convinced and convicted are we of the certainty of God's promises today? Are we watching “in expectation” of the appearance of the one promised “to be king”?
