Hi John-Paul, I really enjoyed watching this and you have so much great content coming up. I’m looking forward to all the interviews you are doing. I have had my own wrestles with the meaning of empathy and have written about it on substack (shameless self promotion) :) It’s such a difficult one to grasp but one worth spending some time thinking about. For me, the first step is recognising and letting go of all the thoughts and feelings you are having about yourself when listening to someone and trying to feel what they are feeling. Very interested in the dopamine problem as well and wonder how that can tie in with a sense of expectation, in fact I believe that dopamine is the very thing that is released in the brain when anticipation something good is going to happen. Really great to hear about all the stuff you’re interested in

Thanks so much Richard, really appreciate your support as ever. I’ll take a look at what you say about empathy on Substack, I saw your recent post on the cost of training on there which I thought was really helpful. I’m sure a lot of people will also be interested in that. Yes, ideas like you suggest about letting go of your own thoughts and feelings are the kind of things that I think would be useful for people to hear. Many of us don’t consciously notice what we’re doing in these situations I think and it can really get in the way of connecting Thanks again for what you say and I look forward to sharing the content with you over the next few months. Hi, thanks for this video. It was really informative regarding how it's unhealthy to separate parts of "the self" and how this can impact our mental wellbeing. I also wondered why the reference for being Bisexual in a straight relationship. I recognise that a couple where there are 2 people who identify as male and female, this outwardly looks like a heterosexual couple. However, a Bisexual person who is in a relationship with someone of the same gender cannot outwardly show they are indeed Bisexual not Gay. I think others may feel their queerness is more validated but it can still further Bi erasure as there's no or little outward relationship that shows your sexuality. I think this is what makes it so important for people to talk openly about being Bisexual if they want to.
@JohnPaulDaviesTTP6 күн бұрын
Hi there, thank so much for your comment and, yes, I completely agree with what you say. It’s just as relevant to someone who’s in a same sex relationship. The reason I did the straight relationship was purely because that was the piece I was asked to contribute focussed on. I wonder also whether that might be because statistically most bi people are in ‘opposite’ sex relationships. As I say though, I think it’s a great point you make and thank you for making it. I’d love to speak to someone on the channel who’s in a same sex relationship in this situation, and/or read their story out, so hopefully that happens and more of a range of experiences can be represented, John-Paul

Thank you for this thoughtful and insightful video. So much resonated with me. I found it interesting how you asked what it is like to be in a monogamous relationship and have a part of your sexuality unlived. It made me think about Bi-invisability as being Bi is not visible by your partner. However, as you acknowledge, a person's sexuality is not just about who they have romantic or sexual feelings for. It covers so many parts. Friendships and being in a community with other people who understand or identify as Bi can be a way to connect to your Bi identity.❤

Hi, such a comprehensive video, the whole series on this is amazing! I'm just wondering, if I were to open my own practice at my home in a garden office, would I need some sort of building permission for this?
@JohnPaulDaviesTTP2 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for what you say about the videos, I really appreciate it. It’s this kind of feedback that makes me carry on 😊 A garden office is a great idea and works well. I think there are two aspects to planning permission here, the size of the office itself and also the use of it. In terms of the size of the office, I’d just check the requirements locally to you and make sure it’s within them if you don’t want to have to get planning permission. In terms of the use of the office, I know lots of therapists who work in home offices and haven’t had any problems in terms of needing to get planning permission for use as a business. I wonder though if there are lots of clients coming and going and people parking in a way that affects others, that someone might get into problems with the local authority, who might insist on planning permission for change of use. It’s probably worth therefore checking with your local authority, but, in terms of the answer, whatever the theory, I don’t actually know anyone who’s got or had to get planning permission for change of use to run a therapy business from home. Maybe if anyone else reading this has any information or ideas, it would be great if they could add them too. Hope that’s helpful and thanks again for your comments.

Hi, thanks for your message and really glad to hear the video was helpful and thanks for watching. As for different courses, yes, there seem to be so many routes in. Certainly in the UK, the websites of BACP and particularly UKCP provide really helpful guides on the different routes in to qualification. Depending on what you want to do after qualification, I think it’s best to do an accredited course with one of the regulating bodies. Are you in the UK by the way? I got the sense from your message you may not be? If you’re outside, I only really know the system within the UK, but someone else reading may be able to comment more fully

Hi John Paul, thank you for sharing your experience. I'm curious on how many hours did you have to dedicate per week (on average) to the foundation course in year 1 and then for the diploma? Would it be possible working at the same time you reckon? Interested also in knowing if the total esitmated budget for the 4 years is closer to £50k or £100k. Many thanks!
@JohnPaulDaviesTTP2 ай бұрын
Hi there, great question in terms of time and financial commitment, thanks for asking it. From what I can remember, time in the foundation was one evening a week during ‘term times’ and maybe 4 weekends a year. There was an essay or two to write too, which would have taken some time with required reading. I guess the time spent on that depends on the person. You could have been in therapy too for an hour a week. Then time in the diploma, again an evening a week and six weekends a year. Also mandatory roughly hour a week (40 hours a year), plus a placement (from the third year I think) of 3 hours a week. On top of that of course essays and reading, with a dissertation in the fourth year too and a placement of maybe 30 hours in the final year in a psychiatric ward. Difficult to say exactly how much weekly commitment it is as some will reads loads and some (like me : )) not a huge amount. Re being able to do the above with a full time job, yes there were people managing big full time jobs with the course requirements. Re the financial commitment, unless I’m missing something, even £50k sounds like a lot in terms of spend. Fees are now around £5k a year maybe? So £20k for the four years, then there’s therapy (maybe £70? x 40 x 4 years), so 11,200. Then I guess travel to the training place, plus books, can’t be a huge amount more. To me, it seems £50k would be on the high side. Wondered where you got that figure from? Maybe fees significantly higher now?

I really enjoyed this one John-Paul. Susan’s journey really resonated with me, as spirituality has become a big part of my life over the past few years. I genuinely believe that over the next few decades people in the west will become more in tune with their spiritual sides, and this type of therapy will become exponentially more valued. However, I think it requires a particular experiential journey that some therapists just won’t be that interested in exploring. Also, the subjective, metaphysical and often paradoxical nature of it makes it difficult to neatly define into a new modality or theory. Many thanks as always for the great content.

For the note, I have been in serious heterosexual relationships. Reason being, I find that woman are more supportive, and make better lovers and friends with benefits. I believe that a true relationship lies between a man and a woman u have mostly dated woman. A good woman would stand by a man. I tried dating a guy before, and it didn’t work. He treated me far more worse than my ex girlfriend. I wouldn’t date a dude again. I find men to be emotionally distant, unsupportive, nasty, and always in competition with each other. Being physical with a woman is awesome. Gay relationships are far more dramatic than heterosexual relationships and hook ups. I believe that is why most bisexuals end up in heterosexual relationships.

Thank you for sharing your journey! Great to learn you can have a successful practice without 'niching down' too much. You mention short, medium and long term clients in your practice. I am wrapping up the first year of my psychodynamic therapist program and we had to do 4 practice sessions with 4 clients, so total 16 sessions. I liked the variety of issues these clients brought in. It did make me wonder how many sessions would be required for different type of problems clients will come with. From my study program I hear significant progress could be made in about 7 sessions. Of course this depends on type of problem and ability and willingness of client to do the work. I am curious to learn how you communicate with clients about the goal and expected duration of the therapy, evaluate progress/ effectiveness of the therapy and when you agree that the therapy can be concluded? What type of clients need long-term therapy? I can imagine a mix of short and long term clients would be ideal. Perhaps an idea for a future video 😅...

You’re really welcome about the video, thanks for saying and glad you found it helpful. Thanks for sharing some of your story too, always good to hear how someone is doing and how they’re finding the process of training and becoming a therapist. Really appreciate the ideas for a future video, I think they’re great and have started to think about them already. I think what makes for the best progress in therapy and how goals and progress are kept in mind and evaluated are so important, as is knowing when to end as you mention. Thanks again for the comments and feedback and I’ll post the video as soon as I’ve recorded it. In the meantime, hope it all continues to go well with the training and feel free to let me know how it’s going along the way, John-Paul

Hi there, thanks for the comment/suggestion, I appreciate it. Can you say a bit more about what you’re thinking about here? In the UK you fill out a form and go for an interview and I imagine they’re usually just looking at your motivation etc for doing the course. Sounds like something a bit different where you are?

Hi John-Paul, i commented before saying i was transitioning into the world of therapy from having worked in museums, and i've finally got my plan mapped out, and this video on finances has made a huge impact in terms of giving me a peace of mind for cementing my decision. I'm currently working as a support worker and doing various volunteering roles, and hoping to apply to become a PWP and then CBT therapist within the NHS. This will allow me to specialize in something i'm interested in, whilst having the training paid for me, as i don't feel comfortable paying for a 3rd degree out of pocket, and this allows me to have a gauranteed full time job within the NHS which i can then transition from into full time private practice!:)

Hi, thanks for your comments and for what you say about the video, so glad you found it helpful. Thanks for letting me know how it’s going for you too, sounds amazing, I’m really pleased for you and it’s a great plan as a way to transition into private practice. Thanks also for posting it here because it gives others an idea of the various paths too. I hope it’s all going well for you and do feel free to give more updates along the way 😊

Great videos, thank you! I wondered if you could talk at all about working in other countries once qualified and if/how that can work?
@JohnPaulDaviesTTP4 ай бұрын
Hi there, thanks for what you say about the videos, I really appreciate it. Yes, I can definitely mention what I know about working in other countries in upcoming videos where relevant. Just on that, the main thing seems to be that your professional indemnity insurance provider is ok with it. In my experience they most often ok it as long as your contract with the client says it’s governed by English law. Highly unlikely anything will ever get to Court of course, but the insurance companies want to know that if it does they have control of it here I think. Thanks again for the comments, I appreciate it, John-Paul

Hi can we go for psychotherapy course after a diploma in nursing
@JohnPaulDaviesTTP4 ай бұрын
Hi there, yes I would have thought so, but it’s best to check I think with the organisation you’re thinking of training at. Thanks for your question

@@JohnPaulDaviesTTP so is possible? Is there any area called nurse psychotherapist I have heard about this area bt i am not sure about it
@JohnPaulDaviesTTP4 ай бұрын
@@anamikasudheesh7427 thanks for your message, I haven’t heard of a nurse psychotherapist role specifically in the UK. I’m sure there are probably nurses who are also psychotherapists. In terms of what’s possible as far as doing a psychotherapy diploma at a UK college, as I say, I think the best idea is to contact the college or organisation you want to study with and they’ll be able to let you know what their requirements are. I really wish you all the best with it.

Being alone is awesome. Being lonely sucks. I like the meditation book called 30 Days to Overcome Loneliness by Harper Daniels for grounding myself.
