I'm a dietary aide my plans were to go to nursing school while duping this job. But after the way I've been treated just as a person who prepares and deliver food has left a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended) Nurses and doctors never put the diet orders in, there's this one female doctor and she is a piece of work, I deliver trays she can't stand me, whenever I go up there she rolls her eyes and scoffs at me and talks to me like I'm crap beneath her shoes. I may not be as important as a doctor but just the callousness of this "woman" is disgusting...my manager warned me that the nurse love to mess with by not putting in diet orders then telling us they did while making us feel dumb even though we literally check the computers several times before we leave yet its our fault. I dont get paid enough to be bullied by people who are suppose to be saving lives not bullying the food service workers...sorry this happen to you, I am staying far away from the medical field and I am going back to school to get my bachelors in the IT field, I am done.

The bullying, clickishness, biased, gang like behavior exists in all sectors of the health care industry. It’s difficult to find the voice of maintaining professionalism while demanding respect especially when you are new. It’s up to the senior staff and supervisors to support new staff. Unfortunately the grade school mentality kicks in. Just keep a diary of the incidences in case it becomes a legal issue, consider counseling and work on an exit plan toward a more supportive environment. You are describing a traditional game plan to get you (and so many who have experienced this bullying) demoted or fired. Be strong, show up prepared. Prove them wrong. They can’t become your mental real estate. Don’t expect support. If you get it, awesome but go in expecting to be on your own.

Hi there! I had a very similar experience growing up as I always spoke about becoming a doctor until my senior year of high school. After joining a dental club, I became obsessed. The instant gratification you receive helping others, and the decreased amount of pressure/competitiveness made pursuing a specialization through dentistry much more efficient (also, I like using my hands and PROVING to someone I can help rather than relying on a pill - mentally made me more sound). I now plan on becoming an oral surgeon, hoping to go down the 6 yr route to perhaps subspecialize and also to get two years of med school. In the end though, I love dentistry more than medicine. However, the prestige of medicine, the competitiveness, and the societal perspective of medicine can blind a lot of people into thinking it’s the only respectable field- let alone in healthcare out there. I know oral surgeons would still be viewed as prestigious and so I may sound a little hypocritical, but my point is my mom/peers didn’t care what I wanted to be, they simply were ashamed I didn’t want to attend medical school anymore. I truly believe this mindset is wrong as having suffered my own health issues, I had to single handedly manage my own treatment with incompetent doctors. The title won’t save you and you can ruin someone’s life by not caring to point them in the right direction. Shadowing a physician, I realized that with the business aspect of medicine, I didn’t like the way physicians operated. I found that in dentistry, the hands on and front end treatment offered more avenues for direct treatment of an ailment. Lastly, I can confidently say that most pre-meds do not have it in them to respect other careers out there. They begin to develop tunnel vision, believing that any other healthcare position is less than, let alone another field. This is an extremely flawed narrative. I believe that when making a decision about what career you want, you have to stop and think about the job based aspect of it, “can I operate the way I want to?” This is why saying I want to help people isn’t enough to get into med school. I understand this response was very long😭, but basically, what I wanted to say was taking a step back, I realized I still love healthcare, I just admired the job aspect of another sector of it. Choosing medicine means sacrificing a lot. While oral surgeons may be on call, it is never going to be even close to as much as a simple procedural-based medical doctor, let alone medical surgeon. When we’re able to let go of societal perceptions when picking a career, that is when we are our truest selves. I am very proud of you.

Idk what state you’re in but you should see if there’s a “Once Upon A Child” In your area. It’s a second hand gently used clothing store for newborns- middle school children. They sell other items too like books, toys, strollers, cribs etc.

Exactly ! If only you can record these people because it speaks volumes on the attitude etc. I get those " orders " to do something RIGHT NOW. A few times , I got delayed in entering data in the patient record. Calling my name from the front ( in the tone of..where is she now ?! ). She points out my mistakes and I find out later, that she made those mistakes too ! Or told me to do something this way, & another time is to completely tell me to do it differently . Makes me confused and unsure.. Am taking it for now.. Trust your gut feeling. You feel bullied..you are bullied. I am glad you're in touch with that. In one position, a coworker hired about the same time I was hired and she had more experience etc and she quit first. I thought she ahd it altogether but she had the same issues as I and just don't want to take it anymore. And she was right to fo that.

I’m in Surgical technology school. How often do you have to use a stethoscope? Does it have to do with the facility that you were hired in. I hear that surgical techs won’t need stethoscopes often I’m curious.

I am a doctor too....and honestly...it has to be #1..in you life for years not just pre-med....but medical school....residency....and then your career...its never ending!...the #1 thing you need is the ability to understand " postponed gratification!"...if you get that...then you have a chance....then the 2nd part...better be you absolutely love to take exams...for the rest of your adult life!...medicine is nothing but a lifetime of preparing and taking exams...for the rest of your life......its not for everyone.

This is why it's important to try to get certified. You learn things the practice might not have the time and patience to teach you.The hours can be long. It could be a 9-5, but you're done when the last patient is done. Which is a con, especially when they're late.
