We are so glad you liked it! If you don’t mind me asking, how did you all come up with such a creative story?
@bbrown6145 ай бұрын
@cdubfilms They way we worked creatively was very much a rapper/producer dynamic. Back then, Kelly would make beats and burn them to cds. I would then listen to them while writing. I would become obsessed with whichever song we were working on at the time, and the music would always play in my head. I always kept a pen and writing pad with me and never let an idea go by. I would wake up at night or even get out of the shower just to write a line down if it came to me. Devil's Train was no different, except this time Kelly had written a little chorus into the music before I received the music. This guided the song in its direction...."Sittin' on the tracks, waitin' for the night train, etc." I loved the old-time americana feel of the music and thought it was a completely unique and original sound for a "hiphop" song. I was listening to a lot of Johnny Cash at the time and loved his ability to tell a full story in just a few minutes. ( songs like "A Boy Named Sue") In order to tell a complete story, I treated it like writing a short story or play. I treated each verse like an act of a play. I drew out multiple outlines, revised lyrics, etc. I had to set up the scene, create a plot, climax, and resolve. Very basic english-class techniques. I chose to do a generational theme because of the style of music. I also thought it had a spooky vibe and the word devil was already there. So I played off the old Faustian trope of making a deal with the devil. I actually wrote the entire last verse (the conversation with the devil part) while we were driving to play a show in Cleveland. As for the interpretation, that's for the listeners to decide. I intentionally ended the song with a cliffhanger so that the listener would have to make their own ending. I'm grateful and in awe that I've written something that inspires people to be creative and make more art. I never could have imagined back in 2006 that it would become what it has, so thank you for keeping it alive! If making films is your thing, go for it. Watch all the great films. Read everything you can about the process. And most importantly, stick to it!! Work on it every day and never let anything come before it.

@@bbrown614 that’s awesome! thank you so much for sharing! I’ve always wondered how the song came to be, especially with it being able to tell such a creative and mysterious story where you both know what is kind of going on but there’s still that unknown side of it, like you said, leaving my it up to interpretation. It is a very masterfully crafted piece of music from lyrics, to the music itself, Everyone here on the channel really enjoys y’all’s music so we can’t begin to thank you enough for your in-depth and truly awesome reply. When writing the script for this film I listened to Devil’s Train so much on repeat to get into the feel of the world, and I pretty much knew all the words by the end of the scripting process lol. Which is what I tend to do when writing films, I like to listen to stuff that puts me in the mindset of the world I’m writing about. Thank you so much, we really appreciate you taking time to write your reply. We really appreciate it and your encouragement.
