Hi channel, so does this mean that any patches or drywall compounding done to existing painted walls can be applied with only paint and primer in one? No need to prime the patches first? Thanks in advance
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter 19 күн бұрын
@@JC-yb7vc from my experience wall patches don’t always need to be primed with PVA prior to painting. In most circumstances where small drywall patches are done, you can apply two coats of primer and paint in one directly overtop of the patches. However, to make sure you don’t see any drywall patches after the 2nd coat, try “spot” priming your patches with the paint first. (If it’s large drywall patches, I recommend priming with a drywall sealer). This avoids seeing a defect where the drywall patches are made.

After my research on paint for an 80 year old redwood siding house, I picked Zinsser Cover Stain. I scrape stripped 90% of all paint, sanded until it was bare wood or paint that was stuck and strong, and tinted the Zinsser primer similar to what will be a final paint color. But, the time to do this alone, is making me think to finish the whole house, strip, sand and prime and then wait till spring to paint it. What is your opinion, suggestions, on leaving a primer coat and letting the wet rainy winter pass until painting the finish paint (maybe put a second coat of primer after winter)?
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter 23 күн бұрын
Good question, thanks for your comment and info. I think most primers recommend painting (or top coating) within 30 days. I don't know if it can wait 6 months, but I think there's a lot of variables involved: weather, airflow, sunlight, exposure to sunlight... I've painted exterior primed boards that were left longer than 30 days and nothing happened. (I think it's just the manufacturers recommendation) The paint on those boards are still good. I think that oil primers could endure longer duration but I can't confrim. Anyhow, I guess it wouldn't hurt to apply another primer coat in the Sping of next year before you paint....

How? I'm sorry but that made no sense? How does two make a difference? What would two do that wouldn't? 😅 It may seem obvious to an allistic person but not everyone is allistic dude, some of our brains work differently it would have helped to tell us what the difference is. Why one small one big putty knife? 🤔
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter Ай бұрын
Got it, sorry for the confusion. Not sure what allistic means but I'll try to help you out in the comments. It's best to only take a small amount of drywall mud at a time, so that the main container doesn't dry up or get chunky contaminants in it. (this is what most people do - they work directly out of the container) You use the big putty knife to hold the small amount while you use the small putty knife to fill the holes. When you run out, you repeat the process. The good thing about using 2 different size putty knives is so that you have one for the small holes, and one for wider damages. Hope that helps!

Can u stain over a paint ?? Opposite to this video -thanks
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter Ай бұрын
@@misenuatransformationalrit6485 NO you can’t stain over a paint. Stains soak into the substrate (wood, concrete) rather than sitting on top of the surface (like paint). So if you’re trying to stain overtop of a painted surface it won’t work. However, you CAN apply a solid stain over a paint - but I don’t recommend it. Solid stain products like Superdeck, Flood and a few others have a hybrid formula (latex and alkyd resin mix) that purports to be able to coat overtop painted surfaces but IMO why would you want to? Why not just repaint? Solid stains look and act very similarly to paint, but if you had bare wood, the advantage of using a solid stain is that you don’t need to prime the surface first. You can just apply 2 coats of solid stain directly to the bare wood (whereas most paints require a primer coat first). Hope this answers your question. If you have other paint related questions you can call our toll free line at 1-866-724-6818 anytime and speak to a professional painter. The bottom of those boards are beveled to fit the sill. Usually from 12-15 degrees. You can’t just turn them around. You’d have to text the bevel from the rear ( short side ) of the bevel and then it’ll be 1/4” too short. If you have flat window sills, which no one does, you have bigger problems. Only way you can do that is with a picture framed window where the trim is on all 4 sides and no sill. This is why you don’t hire painters to do carpentry work

You will get paint to bubble by useing water based paint over oil based paint without useing primer first.
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter Ай бұрын
@@jackieberg6354 yes, applying water based paint overtop of oil coatings will likely cause paint failure. Water based paint doesn’t adhere to oil (alkyd) paint coatings. It’s important to note that even applying a primer coat doesn’t guarantee the previous coatings won’t bubble. It’s very common on older homes for new coatings to grip onto the old coatings, which causes the old coating to let go to the wood (substrate) - which causes a bubble to appear. So it doesn’t matter if you prime oil coatings before you apply acrylic latex paints. Many times on older homes, bubbling happens because there’s too many layers of paint and the old wood fibres let go of the old coatings.

Helpful video! Question - I read that I'd need to do the following steps: 1. Clean the cedar 2. Apply wood stripper and rinse to remove previous stain 3. Apply wood brightener to return cedar to the correct ph 4. Apply new stain. Is all of that necessary if the new stain is similar in color but slightly darker? Both new and old stain are semi-transparent.
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter Ай бұрын
Great question. No that is not always necessary when you are staining to a darker color. That's usually when your current wood coating has failed, lost it's color, darkened - or if you're completely changing the color of the current stain. On this project, we were restaining with the same semi-transparent stain, same color and same product - so it was just a quick rinse and scrub brush to remove any dirt and debris (and dead wood fibres). There's a lot of variables involved so without seeing the state of your wood, or the colors you've selected, I can't say for certain.... but if you send text a few pictures of your home along with mentioning this video I can give you a more precise answer. 1-866-724-6818.
