Yes, it is the NIMBYs. Period. I’ve lived in several East Asian cities and been to all their others. Their functionality stands in stark contrast to the backward idiocy of ours. The NIMBYs are the most pronounced aspect of our society that is lacking elsewhere.

This bad design and lack of planning is horrible. This is a why you can't get people to use transit. Make it unpleasant, frustrating and difficult. This lack of connectivity to neighborhoods, walkability, sense of place is repeated with light rail systems in cities all over the U.S. There appears to be no thinking in making these stations pedestrian friendly like is done in places in Europe and Asia. It's not rocket science. Maybe when AI does it they can do away with the clueless planners who set transit stations up to fail.

i get off there a lot.., its mainly a service entrance area for all those buildings..,(thats why i travel there a lot lol i am a Field Engineer...) go under that overpass, thats where work vehicles and delivery vehicles park... 🙋🤦🤷 on top of that people are refusing to use public transportation so you have the real answers...

To be really honest, no. It's not entirely up to Metro either. Metro has improved a lot over the years. It's up to the people, L.A. economy, and culture to not trash it. I rode Metric bus and trains for years. Now that I live in Tokyo, I understand better what makes public transit work. Safety has always been the #1 issue. Every person in L.A. knows this about Metro but if the city doesn't shape up, it won't ever be safe.

It's great that you have solutions. Really +1 HOWEVER, you're ether purposely misguiding viewers or you're ignorant to NIMBYA resustence. The root isn't city council but the residents. The residents!! Not everyone wants trains or metro and you have know the pushback from upper or uber-rich | uber-connected residents.😅 How about this? You do a video on your neighbors who have pushed back on progress and you interview them wrt to their reasoning ? That would be eye opening You said it yourself: this was only built a year ago. Sheesh!! LA's biggest issues is misplaced finger pointing and NIMBYA. Rn, city officials are being blamed for the wild fires. How is a city to blame... Even knowing jurisdiction lines. But still there's blame. And who's not to blame? Not the rich who historically ignored water limits and have tried to ban people from public beaches bc their home is on the beach; Who else isn't blamed? climate control; no, it's the city's fault. Please. That's not the history or the facts. Every proposed change is countered, questioned, and delays come from people who want it their way. Another example, rn LA wants to add more metro trains: months (years??) of residents arguing over an underground vs above ground rail. Really??! And why above ground? Because it looks cooler. When residents want things bc it looks cool they are entitled and self centered. That would be a video to watch!

"Trains should get signal pre-emption" > "Why, nobody rides the train. Everybody drives!" "Well, yeah, because the trains suck because they don't get signal pre-emption" If they did, folks might actually consider riding them" >"No, people want to sit in traffic. This is America." Hurray for endless decline.

I think part of the problem is the extremely high percentage of MEN on LA public transit. Grew up in NY, now live in LA. As a teenage girl, I never felt unsafe (or honestly uncomfortable) riding the subway in NY. My trips on the LA Metro have been chill, but definitely marked by more discomfort than I ever experienced on the Subway. When I'm on the Metro, I'm often the only woman in sight. That's never been the case on the subway. I think a more equal gender balance would make a lot of women feel FAR safer taking transit, even absent any other changes. Most transit youtubers I encounter are men (no shade, y'all are great!) but there are certain things men take for granted that would NOT be safe for women. This is a really great take- balanced and common sense, unlike most perspectives I see. Thanks!

People in La don’t ride the metro cause of the violence, homelessness, and overall lack of security. They place is a breeding ground and refuge for the worst of LA and they have never done anything to change that.

It’s safer than driving on average, most people aren’t average when driving. The bottom 10% of worst drivers in horrible old cars brings down everyone else’s numbers. if you’re doing a normal commute in a normal new car you’re much safer

It would’ve been smart for an overcrowded city like LA to add trains because the traffic is RIDICULOUS and I heard the population was in the millions. The people in positions don’t have the best interest across the board 💯😒

Never a good idea to build pedestrian tunnels except under a mountain or high embankment. They only become havens for criminals who scare even the homeless people away.

In Melbourne, Australua we introduced PSO (Protecrltive Service Officers, essentially transit police) at train stations and have quite frequent fare inspectors. Feels very safe on our trains/train stations, even late at night and we run 24 hour services on Fridays and Saturdays. Actually some of our tram (streetcar) lines have issues because they don't have a PSO presence.

Is this one of Hoffman's legacies? Paul Hoffman was a Studebaker dealer in LA who wanted a new city traffic ordinance that gave drivers and vehicles priority on LA's streets above everyone else. Before then, pedestrians had priority and any driver that injured or killed a pedestrian was automatically held liable.

We actually have some of these tunnels in Kenmore WA (a suburb of Seattle/Bellevue Washington) and they're kinda the same problem, attract a lot of homeless, but they're mostly used by the local cyclers that are biking along the trail near lake Washington. Theyre not the best solution for walking pedestrians though. Better to just use the crosswalks, but 522 when the trail and tunnels lie is pretty dangerous to hang around anyway
