Hell's Half Acre ironically is still the same. Driving along Triview, you'll see it's adapted a modern phrase commonly known as "Tent City"

My grandma always called it "The Buttons" it was never considered a negative term. The name was because it was the Missouri River bottom when the river was wider. Everyone lived there because it was the first neighborhood in town. The wealthy lived up on Rose Hill on upper Grand View.

To the narrator: The enthusiasm and passion that was put into the “research” for the purpose of making this “historical” gatsby , of is highly impressive. Ma’am, you are an amazing public speaker with impeccable intelligence, humour and privy to captivating any audience. However, the entire narrative is, as of a historical work of mostly fiction. The numbers, the amount of time to build ((6 days lmao) are entirely laughable and quite literally impossible. There were so many countless worlds fairs and festivals that to this very day defy all logic. I’m not saying what the truth is, and what it is not, with regard to the history narratives as a “whole” for this American time period, just upon basic historical records are of so many more of the ultimate questions that go unanswered and the revealings therein , have enough credibility for as many countless questions to incomplete & complete absurdities by my estimation, simply allowing anyone to judge for themselves given all the information would be more suffice for a fictional writers works unto millions. Interesting stuff tho! Golly!

Tom, great presentation as usual. The livestock fountain has been moved to Chris Larson park south east of the pavilion at the Floyd Blvd entrance. It is near where the south bottoms time capsule was buried.

I don’t believe these were corn palaces I think they were actual Turkish or Egyptian archetypes built by previous civilizations that have been erased from the history books and this corny book report is all just lies passed on and fake ass news corn coffee

The Morningside substation at 2019 S. Patterson appears to be on flat ground. That location is on a very steep hill. Could this have been located elsewhere?

Great presentation! The South Dakota Palace really undersells how grand these structures were. I wonder what kind of events/attractions they had to fill out the day, such as what they had under that tent in 1891.

Our wedding rehearsal dinner was at the Brass Lantern, 1976. Joe Gantz Steakhouse was omitted. I think it was at the same location as the Castle Inn at 11th & Pierce. The Normandy Restaurant changed names to Munroe's (Monroe's??) at some point in the late 1970's.

As a small child growing up in Morningside in the 50's, I remember summers when my family slept in the screened-in porch. We often heard the dynamite blasting from the Sgt. Bluff brickyard!

Thank you for the work that went into this slide show. My Great-grandfather, Charles (Chick) Preece owned or worked at the restaurant. He died in June of 1951. I don't know anything about fried rabbit but when my great-grandfather was there the speciality was chili (or so my Dad told me). It was supposed to be a secret recipe so maybe it wasn't on the menu after he died. I found the ad you had in the slideshow in a Sioux City paper on July 25, 1954, after his death. I have a copy of a photo of him inside the restaurant.
