The shaft on mine was siezed solid with corrosion. There are two steel sleeves on the shaft and one of them was seized to the shaft. The black plastic cover just pulls off so you can get vice grips on the shaft. Mine is just as noisy as yours when reinstalled - maybe they're all like that? I put new multipurpose grease on the gears and silicone grease on the contacts. Note there is alittle wavy washer under the white wheel that us easy to lose!

I was thinking I might have to jack the car up and remove the left wheel and wheel house liner for this job, but now that you've shown it is possible (although tight) to do it from above I feel confident to do it myself.
