The Night Witches flew into combat with two small bombs on their plane. The equipment they carried with them: Sidearms, pencils, ruler, flashlight, stopwatch, and a map. Sometimes the navigator carried an extra bomb or hand grenades in her cockpit. Since it was dark, and their planes had only basic instrumentation, they navigated by timing, calculating how much time it would take to reach turn points and targets. The first one in would fire a flare to illuminate the target, the other two drawing fire, then each in turn would make their bombing run. Multiple groups of three would attack targets at three minute intervals. They were well known for their pinpoint accuracy. They attacked German front line headquarters, gun emplacements, trains, bridges, ammunition and fuel depots, and dropped food and supplies to Soviet soldiers. The women flew multiple missions each night, usually 5-8, each mission lasting 45-50 minutes. Of the three all female air regiments, only the 588th stayed 100% female throughout the war. Their Commissar had a male driver for a few weeks, but he was soon driven out by the women. Badass ladies indeed! Marina Raskova was the "Mother" of all the female regiments. She was a famous aviator in the 1930's who had won the Hero of the Soviet Union before the war, setting numerous aviation records. She used her influence with Stalin to create the regiments, after receiving thousands of letters from women flyers in the USSR who wanted to join the war effort.

13:59 I personally think what happened to The Baron here, was a combo of brain injury, brain malfuctioning/ development disorders due to lack of oxygen (lets remember that human brain do develop all the way until 25), stress and many, many other factors. Human body, specially the human brains, is truly something...

A quick clarification. A person was not automatically a Nazi because Germany was his birth and homeland. A person is not automatically a democrat because he lives in a democracy. In the USA there are marches by local right-wing extremists who parade with the swastika flag. Locals not Germans. It is not where they are born that determines who or what they are, but rather how they act. My father was a tank soldier in the German Wehrmacht from 1941 at the age of 17 and later raised us children, I am 62, to be absolute supporters of democracy. Learn and understand and draw the right conclusions. Stigler was not a Nazipilot but a pilot in the German Air Force. I don't want to sugarcoat anything at all, especially since three members of my family didn't survive Nazi rule.

Richthofen, although more famous as a pilot, was probably the king of commanders of fighter squadrons. He trained his pilots, looked after them and protected them until they were experienced enough to fully join the fight. He improved the first fighter tactics and his version was the one used until the guided air-to-air missiles took over the classical dogfighting in the 1960s. He was also a friend and a rival of another guy, who can probably be described as a king of pilots and master of dogfighting and aerial acrobatics - Werner Wos, who was at the time of his death the second highest scoring pilot alive (after Richthofen) and was slowly catching up to him. ... Also, these planes literally had NO armor. The only part of the plane solid enough to maybe catch some shells was the engine block, and no one really wanted to use it as a shield, considering how easy it was to set it on fire, and practically no one had a parachute to get out of a burning plane.

The kind of honor that Franz Stiegler showed that day is sorely lacking from many people today. He's an example we should all look to.

I know this is 2 Years old, but at 13:20 that wasn’t actually their commanding officer! That was Corporal Adolph Hitler! Hitler served during most of WW1 and took part in the Christmas Truce. He, however, hated it. He said those of the German Army who took part in it had no sense of Honor left!

It’s sad that you are neglecting to say the truth for fear of rejection. Too many sit quietly and hide behind the truth and let others do it. You are a puppet as said in this song. I feel you are on the right side yet to chicken to man up! Just saying

For reference, the temperature at that altitude at that time was about -74F. The German pilot (Stigler), first saw the dead tail gunner (reminding him of his older brother who had died earlier in the war in a bomber). He noticed they weren't shooting back at him, then he saw the wounded crew through the huge hole in the plane. He said he thought of his commanding officer, who once told him "if I ever hear of you shooting a man in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself" (his statement was longer than that but that's the important part). Stigler said that to him, the condition of the plane made it the same as a parachute and he couldn't shoot them down. He also said that he knew that whatever he did that day, he would have to live with for the rest of his life. So he decided to go by his conscience instead of his orders. He first tried to get them to land in Germany, and they refused. He then tried to get them to divert to Sweden, but they didn't understand. So he escorted them over the firing lines and to the open sea. Then saluted and flew off. He later said the salute was his way of saying "good luck, I hope you make it home".

Part of his tactics was to climb high and attack the enemy out of the sun, so he could not be seen. The triplane allowed him to climb faster than his enemies could. Hence the alligation to the speed, I assume.

This song hits different for me because my father was a pedophile and he abused me for years and years and when I told on him I was beat on a daily basis and I was never believed to this day I'm 59 and I made it I'm not a victim anymore I'm a survivor. I saved myself straight up

One thing they left out is that Sopwith Cammel had attacked the Red Baron's cousin who happened to be on his first combat mission. He had told his cousin to stay at high altitude to observe the fight only for a rookie British pilot with the same orders spotted and engaged the Baron's cousin. This may have sent him into a rage or otherwise got target fixation. He was also two days from being sent back home when he died.

My boys learned history from Sabaton and us (we’re history buff, amateur archaeologist. Husband is marine historian) kids need to know this history. Their schools are impressed about their knowledge. I did get in a little trouble for my son singing “Primo Victoria” and I had to clear his Sabaton jacket for school dress code

At his time, he was the best pilot that existed. I do like how at that time, people was treated with respect no matter the side they were on, Soldiers can´t control where they are born, and being the best in something deserves to be aknoledged by everyone. And the Red Baron deffinatly was ww1´s best pilot, hands down. I had to add abit here... One of the tacticts he used (that was new during ww1) was climing above other planes to dive down and shoot.... I think atleast.... I can´t be 100% sure he was the absolut first... but he did use that tactic alot and was famous for it... he also took down 80 allies, so it seem´s to have worked quite well :P
