This is great quality work,research,authenticity,kenyanicity and great shots... keep up. Our environment and rivers are very important, I believe riparian lands should be 30 meters on either side of rivers and be planted trees and grass . kenyan rivers should be identifiable from space

I'm confused. I viewed Nairobi River on Google Maps (maybe I shouldn't). There's a Nairobi River that flows through Globe Roundabout. There's another Nairobi River that flows into Nairobi Dam near Langata Road. They are nowhere near each other. Can you clear this up for me?
@ast0nv86 ай бұрын
Ngong River is the one that flows from Nairobi dam.

First second in, i subscribed already, good job, clear beautiful shots, nice clear explanation, good voice, nice background music. I also personally like arial views, it gives a new perspective of a place i'd never see from Above. Am from kikuyu and seeing ondiri swamp from about was breathtaking. Waiting for the next video!

Nairobi river was the boundary between Kikuyu and masailand. All other rivers north of Nairobi river bear. Kikuyu names. Mathare river, Gitathuru(kitsuru) river, Rui rwaka (ruaraka), Gatharaini(kasarani)river etc .

"..granite surface that resisted erosion as surrounding lands sank away over time". Interesting. How exactly did the surrounding lands 'sink' away? If it was because of erosion, where did all the eroded material end up? Seems I have some reading to do.

We have an environmental protection government agency in place. Why not task NEMA Kenya to do it's job instead of starting another Commission???
@kenyangeography6964 Жыл бұрын
NEMA is part of the multi-stakeholder team that will take part in the reclamation efforts led by Nairobi Rivers Commission. The Commission brings together stakeholders from private and public agencies as well members of the public in cleaning the rivers. The herculean task of cleaning the rivers of Nairobi needs multiple players to play a part and not just one agency with a wide regulatory mandate across the country.

You forgot to mention the Kasarani River (Gathara-ine) & Kamiti River both HUGE which join Nairobi River near the Ruai sewer treatment plant. Otherwise, great job, you did better than what most local journalists do in terms of research.
@kenyangeography6964 Жыл бұрын
Thanks James. Indeed there's Gatharaini, the northernmost of the rivers of Nairobi. We plan to do a full length documentary that will cover all the rivers of the city.
@BizSasa Жыл бұрын
@@kenyangeography6964 Kamiti River is the Nothernmost tributary of Nairobi River. It is the one that separates Tatu City & Nairobi City near Kamiti Prison. It then passes near KU before crossing Thika Road & entering Northlands City. I think you could use my probono services on some of these things. So that some of this knowledge is documented for the future generations. 🤔

Enjoyable and interesting. it should have been at least 45 minutes long. the script and the video should have matched..... i wanted to see where it joined to ngong river, i wanted to where the sewage plant spewed its water into the river, i wanted to see where it joined to athi river, and the delta at the coast. you rushed through an otherwise interesting topic
@kenyangeography6964 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback Ndirangu. This was a mini-documentary. We'll work on a full length documentary with all the rivers and all the confluence points.

So the "Mau Mau" hip-hop group from Dandora may have gotten its name from the battle at Dandora Falls!!! Learned something
@kenyangeography6964 Жыл бұрын
Could be that the origin of the rap group's name is linked with the history of colonial resistance in the neighborhood. Would be interested to find out more on this.

First and foremost we need to protect the catchment areas from any human activity and restore the catchment areas by growing indegnious trees and grasses. Infact the catchment areas should be designated as one of the water towers. Secondly, planting of bamboo along the banks of the river all the way to the indian ocean plus planting indegenous trees. While the indegenous trees grow, the bamboo can be harvested since bamboo regenerates real fast. Bamboo matures very fast, cleanse water by filtration, prevents soil erosion and can be harvested periodically without cutting the tree. Type of bamboo that should be planted is one that forms a canopy over the river which provides shade. Thridly. The river will always get polluted as long as there are slums along the river. There should be a deliberate attempt to build proper housing along the river. High rise flats that can accomodate people living in densley populated slums which occupy enormous land. Land use in slums is the worst. You find an acre of land occupying may be 20 families but at the same time that acre of land can occupy 300 families with high rise apartments. Fourth, digging out and dredging and removing all the debri on the floor of the rivers.

These are some of the measures that the Nairobi Rivers Commission will likely put in place as part of the reclamation and cleaning up of Nairobi's rivers. Good suggestions that will hopefully be implemented. Thanks for watching and sharing.

If we cleaned it and kept it clean, its potential is amazing - as a source of water, recreation, tourism revenue, conservation, small scale fishing... Right now it's just a dumping site

Hopefully to be reclaimed for a better urban environment and quality of life.
