How reliable is this engine....why is there alot of bottom end failure?
@TheLabLimited
@TheLabLimited 4 күн бұрын
The bulk of the failures I am aware of come from damage to the sump, oil falls out, driver keeps going = kaboom! There have been a lot killed by the little screws on the throttles for the variable runner setup falling out = knock knock knock as they get smashed into the piston and cylinder head etc. Other than those and general lack of maintenance they are actually pretty good. The current motor in the ute is actually a "junkyard special" I've cobbled it together from several broken motors to make one "good" one. Second hand bearings and rings - rough as guts and it's running like clockwork and has clocked up some decent miles all things considered. The better motor for a D40 V8 conversion is by far the VK56DE though, purely for ease of fittment - it was literally designed to go in there.

Did you have to modify the dwell time for the porsche coils? If so, can you post what settings you ran? Thank you for the amazing content

THANKS! We used 3ms at 14v and reduced it over that voltage, under that voltage it was increased BUT to some extent it's purely "best guess" without actual specs supplied by the coil manufacturer - this is the information you should really be seeking. Talk to your coil supplier and get the chart from them for best results.

Yeah my heater pipes I just went with the BDE heater pipe kit. Had the choice of 4 or 6 AN fittings on billet blocks that sit underneath the pipes and brand new heater pipes that uses an o ring.
@TheLabLimited
@TheLabLimited 10 күн бұрын
Did glance at those but decided against it, could very very easily make but would rather just make the whole deal from aluminium. Biggest issue here was actually the hoses were old and didn't take kindly to having new fittings put on them. Replaced all hoses, only a couple of pinhole leaks on the actual pipes - problem solved.

Yip it's a real thing alright and if you try to ignore it it'll kick your ass big time. I've had three or four days of pretty serious back pain just from a couple of relatively light work. It'll come right but not something you want to provoke to often.

Hopefully the hand heals up soon! Are you expecting much more downforce with the aerofoil (I think) shape vs the thinner existing wing?
@TheLabLimited
@TheLabLimited Ай бұрын
It SHOULD make a noticeable amount more downforce given the shape, the lack of rivets on the surface, the lack of the lap joint in a critical area of the wing. At this stage I've not made a Gurney flap for it so it may even out a little without that. I have a heap of foam left over and a bit of time so I can probably make some small sections and experiment to get some real numbers to compare. (set up on scales and provide some air flow over a section, measure weight change)
@jamiehogan1607
@jamiehogan1607 Ай бұрын
@@TheLabLimited would be interesting to see testing, I have a very passing knowledge of aerodynamics and would know that in theory there would be a difference with the shapes but I have zero practical experience so it’s always cool to see people actually doing stuff and testing!

I will have to check with the customer but I believe they opted to go with an aftermarket dash in the end for simplicity as there were dramas trying to get the CAN side of things right. Following instructions etc and big fail so rather than waste time and money just change the dash.

im looking into this product for my car and i had a question, for something like the electric fans what size wire did you go with?
@TheLabLimited
@TheLabLimited 2 ай бұрын
Hey sorry for the slow reply, the Razor PDM instructions suggest using high quality 18g wire for the high power output pins (tefseal etc) so it has nice thin insulation but decent sized conductor to fit the pins and plugs nicely :)
@073731002
@073731002 2 ай бұрын
@TheLabLimited so since the pdm has a high output pin can I just run a thick gauge wire out of the plug into my fans? Or do I need to go from the pdm to a relay

Unfortunately Leadfoot Festival has been terminated, it will no longer be run the way it was. The venue can be hired and someone/some people COULD potentially try and replicate the event BUT it'll be a heck of a task to replicate Rod and Shelly's efforts.
