Still the newbie here.... At the stern if several of the boats is a plate that is the width of the boat and appearsnto be adjustable for it's height. What is the function of that plate? Like an adjustable rear spoiler on a stock car? But for water rather than aerodynamics?

Shop is not needed. This can be done all at home. The bowl bushings come out with a mandrel and a hammer. The thrust bearing is pressed on the shaft. If you do not have a press take the shaft and bearing and new bearing to any local garage and have them press it off then the new one on. Should not be much money.
