I helped sail a 46' sailboat from Ketchikan, Alaska to Port Townsend, WA in August and while there, we went to the NW School of Wooden Boat building and I met a man (can't remember his name) who is working on your Hardraade boat project including building the tools to build the ship. He teaches at the school in Port Townsend and is increasing his knowledge of wooden boat building by helping you guys with your project. I'm 65 years young and have been sailing for nearly 40 years now so it was a dream to get to see the school and to meet someone involved w/ this project!

Hi Lucas thank you for another very useful video. Now I know what I have done wrong with our windows :) fortunately only 2 so next summer I will do a better job on the others. Question. When I painted them with linseed oil paint but did not putty them that well, can I go just to putty them tighter and paint over again? Or do I need to sand the paint before doing it? All the best Zuzana
@LucasRichardStephens21 күн бұрын
just putty them tighter and paint over again, but carefully use some 180 or 250 grit sand paper to key in the new paint with the old, avoid sanding the glass. Be sure the wood is dry.

This fact makes this ship and Sagamann, the drawings of which we are using, very close replicas of the original, using exact measurements directly from the find. The rigging will be more based on the modern tradition of vikingskip building. The sails' weave and materials is based on the fragment found on the gogstad find.

Hi Is there any timber framing books that covers and explains this type of framing. I have several on English and American. Can these posts hold homes? Edward
@LucasRichardStephensАй бұрын
There are some books in Norwegian I think. This style of building has survived as utility buildings, mostly in coastal areas. However there is a strong connection between these and the stave-churches, which are among the most ancient wooden buildings in the world. I have plans to build in this technique, to house the viking ship I have been participating building, which is just over twenty meters long and five wide. The Boat house being 9-10m wide and 30m long. It would be a large house if used for that. The absence of a bottom plate, may be a concern for a dwelling.

I will have to check, it is not large, smaller than both these filmed here. It is not offset to any noticeable degree. The bevel is probably over 20 degrees, it is not extremely thin bladed. I quite like pasties but here in the USA you pretty much have to make them yourself. Would it not be easier to remove the entire stair tread and glue up any replaced portions separately? Or does that introduce a lot more risk of damage?
@LucasRichardStephens5 ай бұрын
The two repairs were done in a day so not a difficult repair really. It was a short visit which I spent mostly doing the repair while others drank tea and such. The pasty was very delicious, so it was not exactly unpaid....? I don't remember why I didn't take out the step, it was a few years ago now. There was a lot of woodworm I remember, though not active at that time. Maybe I was afraid it would explode into dust if I did too much poking. It needs more complete restoration probably, at some point. Thanks for watching Awldune, best wishes to you and your kin!

Hi, I am thinking of buying Captain 263 with a front loader, however from what I heard from many diferent sources is that even though they offer 500kg front loader for this tractor it cannot handle such weight. I mean the loader itself could handle it on a bigger tractor but due to the small weight and frame strenght the tractor itself can lift a lot less than 500kg. Can you please confirm where is the truth? Thank you very much!
@LucasRichardStephens6 ай бұрын
My loader lifts 250kg and it easily lifts the back of the tractor off the ground when lifting say a log of about that weight, even with 250kilos on the back three-point lifter. It seems well suited to the size and strength of the tractor, I would not want a stronger lifter. I would have to load the back end with 500 kilos to use a lifter of that strength and that is the maximum lifting power of the three point system. I like the margin of strength the 250kilo loader seems to give, it is well suited to the size of the tractor. I have used the lifter for some digging and log lifting and it has not bent or distorted, or broken the frame, even used at the limit of the strength of the lifter. But I don't have any experience of comparison, so I could be wrong.

great video like building a log house upside down to fix one , I would think this was bread and butter work for old time carpenters. The geometry of your axe is perfect for notching. Would you use the red falun mine paint to finish? cheers from Canada
@LucasRichardStephens5 ай бұрын
As far as I know, the customer has used what we call composition(komposisjonsmaling) paint, which is more or less the same as falun rød but with any color you choose. Upside down timbering is so much more time-consuming than right way up for sure.

I am not an expert on what has been found in the way of clamps, from archaeological digs in Scandinavia. I doubt there is much, if anything left from the period. Like many tools there are perhaps finds from other contemporary cultures that might help as pointers as to what might have been used. There was a great deal of international/regional shared knowledge even at that time. We do use clamps from the living tradition that are lower tech than those shown in this film. Some of the wooden clamps we use are shown in other films on my channel.
