These are godlike forms you could improve your martial arts dramatically if you copy this and free style with your own sword a bit.

I've pondered your idea of doing KSW Hyung "with application" as you're asserting they should be done... I think you're missing the point of KSW Hyung. They're not intended to be practice for actual application. KSW Hyung are the "art" in Martial Art. It's like a dance - you're not going to dance in a battle. The beauty of forms is the Yu Wan Hwa, and perfecting the balance & control of body to make your presentation aesthetically appealing. It has nothing to do with stepping into battle.

I will say it is a very good performance. The main problem is that every black belt makes the exact same mistakes, but teach lower ranks not to, who then proceed to make the mistakes at black.It is vicious circle.

Scabbard, not sheath (knife). And the info about drawing only works for a straight sword. The spine must be drawn on the inside of the scabbard to, also, prevent dulling the blade. It is not about speed drawing. Ask the Japanese Iaido masters about speed drawing.

Note, under Korean language rules, the correct spelling is tahn bong and the pronunciation is with a "t", not a "d".

Korean titles go AFTER the name, NEVER before as it is considered rude. Huy Pham Sa Beom Nim is the correct way to address a person in Korean or Japanese (insert rank such as sensei).

His hand motions were way to fast and unfinished a good number of times. He was too rushed and needed to slow it down. His stances were better than most on here, but they still had some flaws with stance transitions.
@Canadiankyosa11 жыл бұрын
There are no real self defence applications to hyung in Kuk Sool Won. Bunkai does not apply here. Kuk Sool Won forms are for leg strength and endurance when done properly, which most people regardless of rank do not.

At 1:21, he made an error that MUST be correct and is prominent in KSW students from white to master: landing in a stance and moving the back foot into a stance instead of landing in the proper stance, if possible or, if not possible, move the front foot forward.

I am learning this form now. I will be referring back to this video often,thanks!

The stance changes have a lot to desired for a Sabumnim. The bobbing up and down would also be a point loss in testing or Kuk Sool Won competitions. Overall, the video shows guhm moo hyung movements and strikes fairly well.

With application: a stick, umbrella, cane, baseball bat, etc. They all are used with similiar (though not identical) principles. Kuk Sa Nim was simply saying that people use guns. I have trained the Kuk Sool sword arts for a while now and, though I am no sword expert, doing a form properly is imperative to refining one's skills with a sword. Again, just my opinion.
@deanlhouston12 жыл бұрын
With application? A sword? :) I was attending a Super Seminar few years back, and Kuk Sa Nym's was asked a similar question about training with sword and bong forms and their usefulness in training for a fight... his response went something like this... "Nobody uses swords anymore. They use this (holding his hand like pistol - smiling)." Moral of the story, don't get carried away thinking you're going to be a sword expert because you learned a sword form.

"Train like you fight, fight like you train" is the mantra of my school. Doing the form over and over a certain way develops muscle memory that you will use in times of stress (i.e. combat situation/self defense). Each form should be, in my opinion, be trained with application. I am sure PSBN Pham has considered this and is keeping in mind the principles. However the words "I'd do it different in battle" must never be used! You should practice now how you would do it in battle. Just my opinion.

hit each others sticks harder so it looks more intense. no offense but this is boring to watch because they're just going through the motions

I wasn't talking about application. I was talking about preserving his tool. Eventually, the sheath won't hold onto the habaki of the sword. That spin move we do at the beginning of the form is not possible with a damaged scabbard mouth.
@brianli199912 жыл бұрын
It is a form. So they will probably use it different in battle.

I use to see no fighting applications in TKD other than a couple of blocks and kicks. However, once I was shown these applications by a master of TKD I understood completely. Once your shown, or taught, that's when it becomes clear.

@jiggahippo * ineffective, but i assure you they can be quite the opposite when put into action
@Mckelkar9612 жыл бұрын
@jiggahippo hi jiggahippo, i've been working at kuk sool for about 4 years, and although i am not a black belt, it seems in my eyes that the ki energy produced in forms, techniques, kicks, punches etc is what supplies power. In fact this channeling of energy often sems to be more effective than dealing massive haymakers to your opponent. Emphasis in this martial arts is put on control, accuracy and technique, not complete strength. This can possibly make moves in KSW look fairly

@lHurtYourFeeIings13 жыл бұрын
@XxxTJNeroxxX Actually, you are kinda wrong. The Koreans stole a lot of things from Chinese and Japanese culture, including claiming Chinese history characters as "hidden Koreans" living in China. KSW itself has a lot of techniques taken from Chinese "Chin Na" (joint locking).

I don't see a lot of "snap" or power, but maybe that's not the emphasis. Certainly an interesting form to watch. I'd be curious to see practical applications behind some of the movements. []
@uuumdm13 жыл бұрын
That was awesome. I have two small tips for you as a sword owner. 1) Try not to draw the sword at an arc. It's a straight sword. Draw it straight out & then slash. If you draw & slash at the same time you'll damage the sheath & dull the blade. 2) Please don't clank the sword back into it's sheath. Sheath it slowly or you'll damage the sheath I know these things because I did them too and now my sheath is messed up on the inside. Those are my suggestions. Good luck.

That's a Korean cult. Kuk Sool Won does not appear in any historical record of Japan, China, the West, or even Korea. It's just a fabricated tradition.

Very fluid form, but there's not a lot of "snap." I can tell a lot of moves are more self-defense/throwing than just punching and kicking, but I still don't see a lot of power in it. Still, looks really, really cool, and he clearly has a lot of accuracy in his technique.
@MDCreload3 жыл бұрын
Yeah Defoe noticed that. Stop leads hyung -sung jin suh Stop in forms shows power. Very fluid. But now just adding the stops.
