The fact that Grant Stone PTB is a whole cut is rarely mentioned, I have two pairs one in French Black Calf on leather soles and one in Badalassi Saddle Tan on Vibram Cavity Wedge. Not a better PTB for the price. I may have to get their long wing blucher.
@chalkboardshoes2 күн бұрын
Yeah, it doesn't look like there's many whole cuts being offered right now. Alden does have some, but they are in other leather options. AE has a few, but not much.
@ryanpiyo983 күн бұрын
No loose grain on either pair of natty cxl ptb. Bigger creases is simply grain break. Those Alden ones are generally still pretty small creases. Loose grain is for obvious delamination of the grain layers in the leather, causing big ugly creasing and patterning on the leather.
@chalkboardshoes3 күн бұрын
I see. I wasn't sure if it was loose grain, but some people have told me it is.
@ryanpiyo982 күн бұрын
@chalkboardshoes there's a wave of misinformation about it. Any sign of non perfect micro creasing and "loose grain" gets thrown into the conversation. In most cases, it's just natural grain break, which can include harsher more prominent creasing. People must think that Badalassi Minerva leather has a tonne of "loose grain" because those crease quite hard. If you hit the jackpot on those, they end up rolling like on shell or with some micro creasing like on a horsebutt. But if you don't, it develops pretty deep and large creases. Just the characteristics of the leather. If it's proper loose grain, there's a good chance you will get that shoe returned or exchanged without much resistance. Love your well thought out and concise videos btw!

Such a great and thorough review! I have this pair in brown CXL and agree with your assessments on heel volume and overall stiffness. Not deal breakers by any means, but dependent on foot shape and personal fit preferences. I’m slightly under a 10 Brannock and got a size 9D, and my most comfortable fit is with dress socks. I’d be interested in trying a 9.5D with thicker socks, and think that a 9.5D would be my correct boot size in this last, because that taller shaft would lock in my heel, as you so perfectly described. I’ve worn my pair almost 30 times, mainly to the office. I had toe taps installed; otherwise for me, that front part of the leather sole would wear out before the flat part of the sole under the ball of my feet.

Hey Sir, I really enjoyed your informative sharing. Especially on the last, because Alden had a wide variety of lasts and other than Barrie, I think it's not forgiving for everyone, and sizing is the most important thing. I really had lots of trouble when buying those Alden modified, military, Viberg 2020, 2030, 2040 lasts. Looking forward to your videos exploring more varieties.

I own the Richmond in Beaver Fur Kudu. The leather has broken in and softened up a lot. They took about 10 miles of walking to break in. The lug sole is not uncomfortable and helped out when walking in the dirt and rocks. I do prefer a slimmer sole such as Dainite or at least Ridgeway for looks but i understand why Andrew placed the lug sole. Im looking forward to resole with Dainite and also wondering how a Parkhurst boot would look like without the split welt and only a flat welt. Also own a 618 and yes the waist and heel do fit better the toebox is rather low and the whole boot feels shorter and i feel like i need to size up a .5 and i can only wear them with dress socks. The 602 and 602M im able to wear thicker socks. If Andrew would even make a 602M stitchdown that would be incredible or even a combination of the waist/heel of the 618 and toebox of the 602M. I the fact that the facings are more spread out vs the Grant Stone's had led me to purchase more Parkhursts since they fit better instep-wise, i do have a low instep and skinny ankles. But yes overall the Parkhurst brand is the best value for your money. Hopefully Andrew can make an in house Dainite type sole. My only dislike about the boot is how big the welt sticks out and that might be due to that split so the stitching has to be pushed out some. On some other brands i see the welt comes in tighter, this makes the boot seem to look a lil longer than what it really is , but i will change that when i send em out for resoling. Looking forward to more of your reviews. Love the videos!

The Lug is definitely comfortable and has good traction, so I understand those reasons.
@joemarvin517024 күн бұрын
Parkhurst does have it's own Dainite style sole, my Natural Dublin Allen's have that sole. The welt does stick out a bit, that's to accommodate their signature "wheeling" around the edge. Parkhurst's does offer a 270 welt on some of their boots now. It's much slimmer, and doesn't include the wheeling.
@liljuanito12324 күн бұрын
@@joemarvin5170 ah yea thats right he did do the in house dainite sole, I have it on my dublins. Ok, so the wheeling is on older models and new, but I have noticed the welts don't stick out as much as the newer stuff. My dublins are nice and tucked in.

I think it takes a few months of regular wear to break in a pair Grant Stone boots and achieve maximum comfort. It’s the insoles, but mostly it’s the lined uppers. When they do eventually mold to the feet, they’re sublimely comfortable. I have a pair of Grant Stone kudu boots, but they’re the Brass boots in Reverse Snuff Kudu. They were tough to break in, uncomfortable for extended wears. They sometimes seemed to grabbed the ankles but they’ll insoles wouldn’t give. Now they’re my most comfortable boots. I can wear them for 12 hours straight and my feet feel good.
@hyrot13 ай бұрын
There should not be such a thing as a "wide last" or a "narrow last". The differences between last types should be in the toe spring, the heel offset or height, and the toe shape forward of the ball. You could maybe argue the arch height and shape. The problem is that the industry does not measure feet with enough dimensions. It seems your boot was built on what we call a combination last. Typically a combo last will be have a larger letter size instep and yet another size larger ball. So, for example, a 9D combo is a 9 in the arch length, a D in the heel, a E in the instep and EE in the ball. When we choose a last, we select it based on the arch length and heel width. From there the the rest is modified accordingly.

A half size down from your regular brannock is a general guide. I have 3 pair of GS and have both the Leo and Floyd last all in E width. I am just an E on one foot and just on the edge of D, I think in the Floyd last I would have been fine with a D but like the room and have never had any issue with heel slip in either last like described here.

@@chalkboardshoes Thanks for that. Ive been rocking some Grant Stones w/ the white Vibram flex soles coming in at only 1.25 lbs, these are my only 'utility' boots as I travel the world and put tons of miles down so weight is important. Having owned several 2030 service boots in the past I loved the look of those and feel these are their spiritual successors (they look more like the older version of that last), was just hoping they might come in at a bit of a lighter build. I imagine the commando soles are largely working against that, but the rubber used can vary that quite a bit.
