Great sounding transfer! I think these five RCA recordings made in 1935 are my favourite Hofmann recordings. Hofmann himself, in a 1955 letter, favoured the 5 recordings that he made later that year in London on 29 November.

Not a piece that I have heard before and unlikely to hear again! I usually enjoy Elgar's work but perhaps this needs more work from me to become acquainted with it before I add it to the list!

Many years ago while studying the Rachmaninoff etudes and preludes, Ashkenazy's recordings helped me to hear and understand the music constantly in new ways. This is the first time I've heard Ashkenazy play Ravel, and I'm stunned. The right hand tremolo in Ondine is one of the best I've heard, and the dynamics and color range are exquisite. I hear things in his interpretation of Gaspard de la Nuit that I had never noticed before, giving me a greater comprehension of it.Thank you for posting this wonderful recording.
