Dang, I've got a bit of a different issue. I was given a kit car with a VW engine in it. It was meticulously maintained by the old man that owned it before his passing. His granddaughter and her boyfriend tried getting it running, so I have no idea if they changed anything up. As far as I know, all the wiring is still correct, but I have no spark. I have confirmed continuity to the coil, have done the spark test on the original blue bosch coil, as well as a replacement aftermarket(both produced spark). I have also tried each coil in the car with the original condenser, as well as a replacement. Beither coil will fire. The rotor is on, making contact, plug wires have continuity, etc. No idea what is left that could be the culprit. I have asked around on several videos, nobody has had a response yet. Any ideas or troubleshooting tests are appreciated

I did! After a lot of frustrating troubleshooting... I finally checked the ignition switch. It was bad (was passing power to the starter, but not the coil). Confirmed by hotwiring, and when I replaced the switch, all is well!

@JoshRogers first, thanks for posting such a video to ask for comments on t/s this issue. I’m curious if you think you would have determined the issue was with the ignition switch initially if you had checked for 12V coming into the coil? I thought you said you had. If so, is there a way to confirm an ignition switch issue w/o having to change out the switch? I’m having the same issue with no spark at the plug but I believe it’s an issue with the CB Perf Magnaspark distributor since I have 12V coming into the coil and the primary and secondary resistance checkout correctly.

You are right, I did check input voltage, and it was present. If I recall, though, it was low though. The ignition switch had continuity, but must have been making a poor contact. Good enough to detect voltage with my meter, but not good enough to handle a substantial draw. In retrospect, I should have tried a voltage drop test with the coil connected. I have a healthy fear of getting zapped by that coil though, and was nervous about trying that.

I share in that fear 🤣 I’m replacing my distributor with another Magnaspark this week. I may have to face my fear and do the voltage drop test of the coil if that doesn’t do the trick.

I thought you had 12 votes to the positive side of the coil when you was trouble shooting it and there was no spark @@JoshRogers

@@JoshRogers oh really mine has been sitting for about a year and a half to 2 years and the fuel line was clogged cleaned that and it would idle ok but once it got hot it ran like shit (misfire/not enough fuel ) and now it just cranks if I spray brake clean in the carb it doesn’t even try to fire on it so I’m thinking I have a bad coil but it’s raining here so can’t test it kinda at a loss until I saw your video
