Good list. George Pal's The Time Machine was one of the very best sci fi movies ever made that was true to the spirit and essence of H.G. Wells novel. Another, was Douglass Trumble's Silent Running.

Back to the future was crap movie with no depth. Peggie Sue got Married, although unfortunately unknown was a masterpiece.

Being elderly (76) gives me a deeper perspective on the best science fiction movies. Your list is very comprehensive but leaves out a few science fiction movies such as The Day the Earth Stood Still. Conversely, the movie Interstellar is one I will have to watch in the future. Now, I take issue with Blade Runner being at the top of your list. Maybe 10th or lower in my estimation. Perhaps replace it with Forbidden Planet. Good try though, it's just a matter of age. Oh, one more that should be seen, the older version of Arrival with Charlie Sheen is much better than the new version. Not even the same type of movie but extremely good. Let me know what you think, ok?

I've noticed over the years that people either "get" Blade Runner or don't. It's pretty profound under the surface. I discovered here recently that apparently a lot of people didn't get it inititally - it didn't do that well in the box office. The real appreciation came later.

So many to choose from: Planet of the Apes Soylent Green Quest for Fire The Day the Earth Stood Still (original with Michael Rennie) The Blob (original with Steve McQueen)(is this sci-fi or horror? It was from outer space) Silent Running 12 Monkeys Fantastic Voyage Forbidden Planet

12 monkeys, event horizon and dune should be on the list

2001 isn't really "great" either, but I can't see how it's possible to leave it off. So yeah - I wouldn't Interstellar, and I think Inception is a stretch too. Otherwise, though, great list. So, is this "your" list or did you use some kind of an algorithm to select these? I could absolutely think of a couple to replace Interstellar and Inception with, though I'd want to give it some thought to make sure I didn't forget anything. The recent Dune was far better than Interstellar. Right of the top of my head you had Frequency, Total Recall, Predator, etc. - all of them better than Interstellar, and actually better than Inception too.

To be honest, list is from ChatGpt… I wasn’t expecting Back to the Future for example. Inception or Arrival are good movies but they are not a T2 or Alien or Matrix for me…But I am learning from the comments Forbidden Planet I will watch and maybe Andromeda Strain…As a kid one of my favorites the original Planet of the Apes and West World with Yul Bruner…where are they?
@KipIngram3 күн бұрын
@@gruznan The Andromeda Strain is quite good, though it's fairly "clinical." Almost documentary style (not quite, but in that direction). Back to the Future is just full of logical holes you could sail a battleship through, but it's just so damn fun that I give it a pass. They do a perfect job of managing your emotional ride in that one. I liked Planet of the Apes too when I was a kid, and I may as well confess that I liked basically all of Roddenberry's attempts at a post-Trek sci fi show. Genesis 2, Planet Earth, The Questor Tapes - those were all good, at least for a kid. Plus I watched all of them with my dad, who's not around anymore, so... fond memories. Forbidden Planet is certainly worth a watch, though it will fit almost precisely into what you might already imagine as "50's science fiction." Pretty straightforward. The concept of space adventure was still new to everyone, so they didn't require any fancy "twists" in the story the way we do these days.

Interstellar is the first one I disagree with. I don't care how much people rave over it, it's just not really that good.
@KipIngram5 күн бұрын
Back To The Future has logical flaws in its time travel you could sail a battleship through, but it's still an absolutely awesome movie.

Tartışmasız en iyi film yapılış tarihinide göz önüne aldığımızda matrix dir . aksiyon kurgu ve felsefe siyle 1 numaradır
@gruznan5 күн бұрын

Arrival tries to be science fiction but doesn't understand the science of linguistics. Supposedly a non-linear language opens the door to time travel. Speech is linear, but all human language is hierarchical, not linear.

These are great films, but to not include The Andromeda Strain from 1971 is amateur. It defined what serious sci-fi would become.

A good list. I'd have found room for Tarkovsky's ''Solaris'' (1972), Spielberg's ''Close Encounters of the Third Kind'' (1977) and there are many more but where do you stop? Alien will always be a favourite for me, the detail that went into the design of the Nostromo makes it forever real. Thanks for an entertaining watch.

I think you did a great job although I might have slipped in Forbidden Planet, The Time Machine (1953), Star Trek II Wrath of Kahn, and 1951's The Day the Earth Stood Still somewhere without bumping off the ones you chose. I don't know how you pick a Top 10, much less a Top 20, as there have been so many good ones over the years. But as the saying goes, "Ask 10 SciFi fans, and get 100 opinions. "

Are you aware that the very clearly spelled 'Sci' in 'SciFy' refers to 'SC'ienece>? <Science-Fiction> A Space Odyssey is clearly the no.1. What do the dumb space western-like-movie-series called Star Wars even do here? Fun - yes, but science??? You've mentioned eg. Arrival' -> yeah, top ten at least, maybe even top five.
