Fue el mejor de todos los tiempos. Mejor que Maradona, Messi, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Romario, Garrincha, Cruyff, Di Stéfano. No me cabe la menor duda. Vea, Pelé podía hacer goles con la derecha y con la izquierda con igual facilidad. Convirtió goles de todos los colores y sabores que se pueda imaginar. De afuera del área, dentro de ella. Con la parte externa del botín, con la parte interna, con el empeine, de taco, con la punta. Goles de volea, de chalaca, de palomita, de sombrerito. Goles de tiro libre, especialista en los penales, todo. Como si fuera poco, Pelé era un extraordinario cabeceador. Normalmente le ganaba en el salto a defensores más altos que él ya que Pelé cuando saltaba era capaz de impulsarse en el aire como un pez fuera del agua. Observe cuidadosamente el gol de cabeza que le convierte a Italia en la final del Mundial México 1970. Físicamente, Pelé era impecable. Fuerte, rápido, potente, con mucha resistencia. Técnicamente era un maestro. Su control sobre el balón no tenía igual. Se movía con el balón con una naturalidad alegre y sencilla. Capaz de atravesar una nube de defensores como un cuchillo caliente cortando mantequilla. Desde el punto de vista táctico, Pelé no tenía fallas. Véalo controlar el balón con clase y dar un pase perfectamente ciego a la arremetida de Carlos Alberto para el cuarto gol de Brasil ante Italia en la final de 1970. Simplemente de-li-cio-so. Pelé tenía coraje. La mayoría del tiempo, cada vez que pisaba la cancha, Pelé era el blanco de sus contrincantes. Los adversarios escogían a su mejor defensa y lo mandaban a marcarlo todo el tiempo. Jugó casi toda su carrera sin el beneficio de las tarjetas disciplinarias, recién aparecieron en 1970, cuando Pelé jugaba su último mundial. La cultura de los árbitros de esa época permitía mucho más juego brusco. Pelé aprendió a defenderse y nunca dio marcha atrás. Pelé jugó en campos que no estaban en buenas condiciones de acuerdo a las canchas modernas. El balón se desviaba, daba botes por aquí, por acá. Más difícil de controlar, más difícil de dar un buen pase y aún así Pelé brilló con la luz de una supernova. Teniendo en cuenta todos los factores en su contra, es increíble que Pelé haya convertido más de 1,000 goles. Campeón nacional e internacional con el Santos, triple campeón mundial con Brasil. Pelé tiene el récord, que creo nunca se superará, de ser el jugador más joven (17 años) de participar en una final del campeonato del mundo (Suecia 1958). No sólo eso, convirtió dos goles en esa final en la que Brasil derrotó a Suecia 5-2. Finalmente, Pelé aparte de ser el único ser humano declarado tesoro nacional por el congreso de su país (y consecuentemente intransferible a un equipo extranjero), Pelé ha sido el mejor embajador que la FIFA y el fútbol ha tenido. Un hombre, un ser humano decente, un ejemplo para la juventud de todos los tiempos. Y dígame ¿quién puede tener mejor sonrisa? Aquí les describo el gol más hermoso que vi en mi vida… Lima era un revuelo total tras la noticia de que el Santos FC de Pelé iba a visitar el próximo fin de semana. Santos enfrentaría al campeón peruano Alianza Lima. Alianza además anunció la contratación de Souza, un gran defensa uruguayo pero sólo para jugar ése partido y sólo para marcar a Pelé. Alianza le pagaría la extraordinaria suma (en esos tiempos) de $500 dólares además de cubrir todos los otro gastos de viaje, alojamiento, comidas, etc. Era verano así que el partido se jugaba de noche en el Coloso de José Díaz, es decir, en el estadio nacional. La noche llegó, noche fresca, la muchedumbre expectante ovacionó al Santos cuando pisaron el campo de juego perfectamente de blanco, en línea, y apuntando a los cuatro costados deslumbraron con su tradicional y elegante saludo japonés. Conforme el partido se fue desarrollando, Souza un negro, alto, fornido y ágil estaba anulando a Pelé. Claro, el uruguayo jugaba de acuerdo a su estirpe, es decir, al borde del reglamento y por encima de éste cada vez que podía. Terminaba el primer tiempo, Pelé estaba casi en la mitad de la cancha pegado sobre la línea del lateral. Su arquero soltó un saque largo y alto en su dirección. Pelé se le anticipó a Souza y mató el balón con el pecho dejándolo rodar al piso. En ese momento, Souza fue por el balón que daba un bote al caer. Pelé nuevamente fue más. Conforme el balón subió del bote, de taco le hizo un sombrero a Souza que quedó paralizado y sorprendido por la jugada. Con la agilidad de una pantera, Pelé dio media vuelta los ojos clavados en el balón que sobraba a Souza. Se dio maña para captar que Villanueva, el arquero de Alianza, estaba muy afuera de su arco a unos treinta metros más o menos. Conforme caía el balón Pelé lo empalmó de volea y sacó un cañonazo terrible que describiendo una parábola perfecta superó la desesperación del sorprendido Villanueva y se clavó en las mallas. Un silencio completo invadió el estadio, era como que la muchedumbre necesitaba un momento para procesar lo atestiguado… y luego sí, sí, sí… estalló el estadio, todos de pie, todos en una ovación cerrada, todos impactados permanentemente. Hasta ahora los puedo escuchar. Padre, descansa en paz, gracias por haberme llevado esa noche al estadio. Tu hijo, que siempre te quiere. Pelé, sin duda alguna, el mejor. PELE WAS THE BEST AND HERE IS THE PROOF. 1. He could score with either leg. He scored over 1,000 goals, goals of all types, colors and shapes. From outside the box, inside the box, volleys, scissor kicks, diving headers, soft, hard, over the goalie's reach, upper corner, lower corner. You think of it, he did it. 2. He was excepcional with headers. He would usually out jump taller defenders. He was like a fish in midair, able to get higher once he jumped. Observe carefully his header-goal against Italy in the finals of the World Cup México 1970. 3. Physically, he was impecable. Strong, fast, quick, powerful, with remarkable endurance. 4. Technically, Pelé was masterful. His control was awe inspiring. Pelé made it look easy, natural, joyous. He could dribble past a cloud of defenders like a hot knife through butter. 5. Tactically, Pelé had no flaws. He would move knowingly on the field, commanding his teammates, understanding where they would be, occupying spaces, opening the game as needed. Watch him control and blindingly pass the ball to Carlos Alberto for Brazil's fourth goal in the final against Italy in the World Cup México 1970. Simply delicious! 6. He was courageous. Most of the time, when he stepped on the field, Pelé was a marked man. Teams would have their top defender shadow him constantly. He played most of his career without the benefit of the disciplinary cards, they were instituted in 1970, Pelé's last World Cup. The referee's "culture" of the time, allow for much more rough play. Pelé learn to defend himself against tough defenders and never backed down. 7. Pelé played on fields that were not the best by today's standards. The ball would bounce here an there, responding to the unevenness and holes on the field. It was much more difficult to make a good pass, much more difficult to control the ball and yet, Pelé shone with the light of a genius. 8. Pelé won many national titles, international titles and the World Cup three times. He is still today the youngest player to play in a World Cup final (17 years old at Sweden 1958) and score (two goals). 9. Finally, Pelé was FIFA's best ambassador of the game. An example for the youth of the future and most decent human being. And who could beat that smile? I saw him score the most remarkable goal I have ever witnessed... Lima was all up in a buzz as the news spread like wild fire about the arrival of Santos of Brazil with Pelé. Santos was going to play against Alianza Lima the Peruvian champion. The excitement increased as Alianza announced the hiring of an Uruguayan defender named Souza just for the match. Souza's job, of course, was to shadow Pelé all game long. Alianza paid Souza the enormous amount (in those days) of $500 dollars just for the one game, all other expenses (travel, stay, etc.) covered. It was summer, so the game was going to be played at night at the "Estadio Nacional." As the game progressed, Souza, a tall, black, strong and agile player was doing a very good job of shadowing Pelé. Souza, being from Uruguay, was schooled in the ways and manners of their style of play. That is, all nonsense and as rough as the referee would allow and more. It was almost half time, Pelé was next to the touch line near midfield watching his goalie kick the ball long and high. As the ball fell towards him, Pelé smoothly chess trapped it and allow it to roll down onto the field in front of him. Souza jumped on the ball but Pelé was first. With his back towards Souza, Pelé heeled the short bounce of the ball over Souza's head. Fast as lightening, Pelé turned around, his eyes riveted on the ball as it was falling down passed Souza. He quickly realized that Villanueva, Alianza's goalkeeper, about forty meters away, was way out of his line. In a flash, Pelé volley the ball. It described a laser like parabola over the surprised humanity of Villanueva and into the back of the net! It was magnificent! Extraordinary! Amazing! An instant hush fell all over the stadium, as if all those human minds needed time to really process and accept was they had just witnessed. And then, then, everybody stood up and applauded and applauded and applauded. I still can hear them. Father, may you rest in peace, thank you for taking me that night to the stadium. Your loving son, always. Pelé, Pelé WAS AND IS THE BEST!
