No one can argue that nuclear strikes would not be devastating. But 1980s movies like this, Threads, and Threads had STRONG political motives. That is, the United States and its allies should adopt unilateral nuclear disarmament. The movie creators were apparently ignorant or refused to believe that our nuclear deterrent was the only thing keeping us safe from such an attack. This movie also has a LOT of plot holes. Apparently, one morning the Soviets decide to launch a massive nuclear attack for shits and giggles. They too, are apparently unaware of mutual assured destruction. If it was a mistaken launch such as the potential fears over Able Archer and the 1995 Norwegian sounding rocket, both of those real life incidents showed that cooler heads prevailed. One glaring plot hole is that if they were close enough to see the flash of a detonation, the old man's CB radio would have wiped out by EMP. But let's say that it somehow survived. It's unlikely that they would not receive any messages from beyond the Bay Area. The government or military authority would still exist at Mount Weather or Cheyenne Mountain. This is not even mentioning other countries who would be broadcasting. The biggest plot hole (and the dumbest) is that only Kevin Costner and Rebecca De Mornay decide to evacuate. It's possible that fallout contaminate the entire country, but they don't know that. They might die in the journey, but they will DEFINITELY will die if they stay. I seem to recall there was a scene where the mother asked the little boy whether he wants to leave and he says no. WTF? "No mommy, let's stay here and stick it to Ronald Reagan!!!!" Like anyone sane, I have no love for nuclear weapons. However, there is no good strategy other than mutual assured destruction. Unilateral disarmament--whether then or now--would only bring on the sort of nuclear holocaust that this film portrays.
