I got the castle to lift off as a kid but just recently dusted off my NES to try again. So far the best I've done is 164 lines, level 16. My rocket was mediocre though.

Puzzle 60 is wrong. The middle row 15 ended with 17 dots.

The solution is correct. It may appear wrong at first glance, but there is a gap in that row which means the calculation stops and the two leftmost dots are not counted toward the 15 row. They only apply to the two diagonal 4 rows on the left.

Actually, Sector 20 and 60K Points is the Intellivision version. Atari 2600 is Sector 14 and 40K Points.

Did this on PS2 just now and I swear to you the bar goes a lot faster than the Gamecube version, 10 seconds longer and this would be impossible

This is insane, what an intriguing piece of software for this maligned machine. Thanks for covering this. Would never have imagined anything Lovecraftian for the virtual boy...(but then again, the effect it had on people after a play session also makes it oddly fitting.)

small question: was this played on a mac? i ask because the version of M:ME i have from Steam has different logos (no redorb, the cyan theme is different), plus some other minor differences (mine doesn't have the fullscreen flyby when linking to myst island)

There is a fantastic guide by Master_Higgins that explains it much better than I can: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/atari2600/585121-space-shuttle-a-journey-into-space/faqs/42094 Specifically: "IMPORTANT TIP: From the 5th docking onward, always line up Y BESIDE 0 (at 1 or -1). The reason is; the satellite is so erratic that it changes its Y axis every 2 seconds or less. The trick to later dockings is lining up Y to be one off 0 and waiting for the satellite to move on to 0 and stay for the full 2 seconds. (there’s a 50% chance it will move farther away along the Y axis so if you are at -1 and it moves farther making you at -2, simply move with it to readjust back to -1). Getting the hang of this tip makes docking the erratic satellites infinitely less difficult."

The trick to kill them very quickly is to never use the turbo shot. Each one has a weak point, you shoot there and they freeze, that's how I made my records. Good luck!!

I initially felt the same way about this mission, as its not very intuitive the first time playing. After learning from watching other playthroughs and then playing the mission myself over and over, it becomes less overwhelming and more enjoyable. Here's what I do in terms of strategy: Phase 1 - Tasks before picking up Andrea -Turn Signpost, destroy barracade. -Armor elements: I deploy both Abrams to position 3, and both Bradleys to position 2. -Supply/Fuel Trucks: Having these in the rear behind the armor keeps them safe. -Infantry element: Deploy to position 1 AFTER equiping them with body armor and bazookas from the supply base to the east of the barracks. -Pick up Andrea last. (ignore the "Andrea is cooling her heels..." there's enough time to get all of this done first. Phase 2 - North Korea sneak attacks -Ignore sub commandos and bus commandos if all assets were deployed (they'll arrive to empty bases) -Intercept tunnel commandos to protect the artillery shells and mines at supply base. -Fly North - Kill central SCUD (optional, if infantry was deployed) -Fly West - Land Andrea by western SCUD (it will hit the western tunnel instead of the A-10X) -Fly East - Kill eastern SCUD (protecting MLRS) -Rescue ROK agent to reveal tunnel locations, get gun attachment Phase 3 - Destroy tunnels -Fly South and have MLRS take out the fuel depot (center) (this slows the armor to half-speed) -Fly to the 6th tunnel (eastern-most), and land Andrea by drill -While Andrea is busy, fly west and pick up the generator to destroy the 5th tunnel. -Go Pick up Andrea and fly her to the 3rd tunnel from west. -- Fly north and pick her up, knock down nearby pillars. -Fly to the 2nd tunnel from west, land Andrea by fuel truck. Destroy the fuel truck to quickly destroy the tunnel. -Fly to supply base, pick up artillary shells, then use them to quickly destroy tunnel 4 Phase 4 - Armored Reserves Committed -Fly to MLRS - target ammo dump -Use land mines to protect MLRS -Knock down pillars on northern edge roads -Go get the A-10 and have some fun until the B-52s arrive. Summary: Its vital all Phase 1 tasks are completed before getting Andrea. Anything not deployed will be targetted by commando raids and tank flank tunnel attacks. -- 4 of the 6 tunnels can be quickly destroyed by the reprogramed eastern SCUD, fuel truck, artillery shells and generator...leaving just 2 that need to be destroyed slower by a drill. -- With the Abrams, Bradleys, and Infantry deployed accordingly, you'll have a fairly solid defensive line across the map gaurding the choke points. Affter the tunnels, ammo/fuel depots are destroyed, the rest of the level becomes almost too easy. Anyway, the fun of all this for me, is because of how much of a sh!tshow the level was the very first time I played it. Having a strategy that effectively thwarts the enemy offensive is a bit satisfying.

I had this game as a kid. I loved it back then, al tho infuriating, the game play was super unique compared to other games at the time. I always wondered why it wasn't more popular, and I'm sure if Nintendo had hyped the game a bit, it could've become a phenomenon.
