Excellent lecture. Learned a lot. Just a thought - Prof. Blight's comment about Teach for American type program at Yale - where the univ pays grads to teach 3 yrs in a public school. Idea is great, but a private institution paying a public school teacher's salary might be problematic. How about Yale pays the equivalent - $ X per year to help the student pay down their student loans - at least until we finally deal with the mockery that is our student loan system in this country.

How fortunate we are for modern technology that avails the world access to history scholars; as today's modern Black studies and history departments in formal institutions mature, the challenge in this area of scholarship remains to expose the duplicitous nature of racism, the expertise in the science of sociology, history, and psychology has yet to articulate the phenomena in all its hues adequately. I've yet to observe any Western scholarship deconstruct the advent of the "Doctrine of Discovery," which many deem the singularity responsible for launching racism and white supremacy worldwide. The modern and post-modern racism and white supremacy that plague the entire world, that which we live with and experience every day, didn’t exist before the Papal Bulls Dum Diversas (1452) and Romanus Pontifex (1455) Doctrine of Discovery“ Inter Caetera” issued by Pope Alexander VI on May 4, 1493”. To the Europeans, the pope is gods representative on earth. Christians believed that the pope was God's representative on earth. Because the pope was seen as God's representative, it was his duty to decide what the church would teach. Occasionally, a pope would write a letter called a bull to explain religious teaching or outline a church policy. The Catholic Pope made it a sacrament for all Europeans to be racist; their Christian beliefs reflected in the monarchy of Isabella and Ferdinand commenced racialized slavery which brought about the "Spanish Reconquista" which cultivated the Papal Bulls Dum Diversas (1452) and Romanus Pontifex (1455), followed by the Doctrine of Discovery "Inter Caetera" issued by Pope Alexander VI on May 4, 1493" denies the humanity of African people states explicitly that "El Neguru's" black people shall be enslaved in perpetuity.

I'm working as a dramaturg on developing a musical based on the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" and this is turning out to be such a lovely resource! The social class of the main character is made clear in other ways, but it's fascinating to learn that even the use of the wallpaper itself tells a whole story about social class and perhaps even in the subtext points to the main character's worldliness and education. For us wallpaper is something you'd find in homes belonging to people of many different class backgrounds. Obviously it's a piece of fiction, but it's interesting to gather information like this. Very illuminating. Thanks for sharing! It's nice to know that one can spend some time 'reading' the wallpaper and not be losing one's mind.
