My dog recently has been missing the step with her hind leg occasionally. I think I'm going to give my vet a call and ask him of he thinks I should try this first or bring her in for a quick check first. My intuition says this is the answer.

It depends on you dog's age, breed and previous physical history what this could be. A skipped step might indicate a fluxating patella, arthritis, torn tendon, stretched muscle or even neural degeneration. Lucy has a bit of arthritis in one knee and slow neurological degeneration. We first noticed a skip on one rear leg every now and then. We suspect that was the arthritis showing itself at 14.5 yrs of age. A year later, we definitely see a change in her gait and her speed from what it used to be.

If you have a dog that already enjoys it, then it gives them an appropriate outlet to do the behavior. Just like providing a digging box for dogs that enjoy digging. Instead of trying to stifle the behavior, redirect it! Or like running, teaching them to run with you, rather than run away. You have to be creative with many dogs!

Fun!!! I'll make one tomorrow for my Chaucer, he <3 our home made toys--a 3 ft long, thick braid from an old fleece throw is a favourite, lol, when we aren't playing tug sometimes he takes it to his mat and spends ages carefully undoing the knotted ends and unbraiding it. I don't even buy expensive toys any more, they often end up unused in his toy box

Will I teach this in the same way with a puppy?
@supernaturalbc2008
@supernaturalbc2008 4 ай бұрын
Yes! I now start with the process calling it "Wait". That means the pup gets the treat. Once we switch to the pup not getting the treat and does get something else from the handler, it changes to "Leave it." So the dog never gets the thing you cued him to leave. It's a shaping process.

Unfortunately that dog is already very well trained. How do you get them trained like that? Dogs don't scratch things like that board automatically. They have to somehow be trained to do that scratching.
@supernaturalbc2008

She was not trained. What you see are actual training sessions. What she has learned is how to offer behaviors. That comes from breaking the steps into small enough pieces to build behaviors from that. It's called "Shaping."

Great to hear! The key is to not do the jumping too often and be careful what surfaces you do them on. Listen to your dog. If she says she doesn't want to do it (refuses or uses a displacement behavior when you cue it), don't do it. Lucy just turned 15 years old and is still doing well because I followed that advice! Enjoy!

Great question! The same approach can be used. Start in another room far away from the dog as possible. Or even downstairs. The key is that the sound is muffled or softer and the dog has a way to move away from the sound.

These exercises MAY teach the dog rear end awareness, but it depends on the dog and whether they're a thinker or not. The only sure way to know whether your dog has rear end awareness is to isolate their rear from their front and ask for movement of the rear end independently from the front. When doing cavalettis or ladder work, the dog doesn't necessarily have to think about their rear. The rear goes because it's attached, there's no choice. Even with perch work (dog putting front paws on an object and then circling around to the right or left with the back feet) while your criteria is that the dog to walk around with it's back feet, the dog could just be turning it's shoulders enough so that the back end moves by default. An orthopedic vet recommended to me that I isolate my dogs rear end so that I know he's actually aware of it rather than it just coming along for the ride with the front. I got a box that was big enough for my dog to get all 4 feet in it, but small enough that to get all 4 feet in he had to mindfully place them in--he couldn't just get all 4 in by default. It actually took a month of work for my dog to be able to independently move his rear feet into the box! And we'd been successfully doing perch work, ladder work, and cavalettis and all the other traditional rear end awareness exercises for over a year at that point! The other exercise the specialist recommended was what he called "doggie dancing". Have your dog stand up on his back feet while you support his front feet and have him step forward and backward. The first time I tried this with my dog he almost had a panic attack! It took a while for him to be able to move his back feet independently of his front. The only exercises in here that would definitely teach a dog read end awareness are the ones where the dog places it's back feet behind him in a mindful manner, independent of the front.

Yes, this is true with any exercise. It's how you train and what you focus on! This video is more about inspiring people to think about what they can do than actually training them. That would be in other videos!

I am glad! My challenge was that we were prepared for an outdoor trial with bunnies and birds. Lucy has very high prey drive and is very food motivated. They brought the trial indoors for the first time ever. I did not bring low value treats so with each run she got more aroused as she REALLY wanted the treats at the end. Have fun!

How do you teach this?
@dogsexplained
@dogsexplained Жыл бұрын
This is a great example of modifying the environment so the dog can succeed, then gradually change it so it's a a little bit more of a challenge. Start with a nose target to a bead on a straight part of the wire (holding it level) and mark if the bead moves at all. Once the dog is consistently pushing it along a short level stretch, you can hold the wire so it has a slight incline and the dog has to learn how to modify the push to get it higher. Most of these toys come with three different shapes of wire so I isolated it with the easiest on to start with. Then we switched to a slightly harder one. Each shape offers a different challenge and adds to the dog's learning. Have fun!

Thank you Donna. I have recently restarted this exercise with my 11 year old. I’ve only been doing a session once a day with about 6 to 8 reps. She does not get tired with this amount of reps. Would you consider doing this exercise long term after a few weeks doing it daily?
@dogsexplained
@dogsexplained Жыл бұрын
It depends what your goal is, how may step are in each rep, how high they are etc. If you want to maintain it, then I would find what her endurance is and stay there. If you want to improve it then push the window just a little, keeping in mind at some point you will reach a threshold that she won't want to do. If she's keen to keep going then let her. Lucy was one of those dogs that would keep going no matter what but she's finally realized she can say no. This is a good thing! Keeping an eye on the # reps, height, # poles etc also gives us some concrete data to monitor as well.
