I've done a complete backup with a WD-1 terabyte hard drive hard drive and I want to do a factory reset on my laptop because I think there's software that is slowing it down Does the backup also back up programs that were on my computer or only the files as in document and picture files or can I safely assume that all the programs have also been backed up so after I do a factory reset on my laptop Do I need to then reload the WD software onto the pristine laptop or once I reconnect the Western digital external hard drive will it automatically retrieve all files as they were on my laptop beforehand including programs.. I warn anyone to use the continual backing up of your computer. The reason is if your computer is hit with malware/virus/hacking, it can also affect your connected backup. My advice is to backup the computer with that external drive, then disconnect it until you need to back it up again.

how about recovering files? Everybody and his brother has a vid about how to back up your files. There are a lot of vids about how to recover them by using a third party app. Some are free and some you pay for. If WD is providing backup utilities on their drives, why aren't they providing recovery utilities on their drives? My WD drives are not 10 years old so they don't have the SmartWare. They do have WD Discovery. That just seems to route me to the .tibx file on Windows Explorer. Now I'm waiting for it to wade through a couple terabytes of photos to see if the lost files can be recovered from a backup made before the files were lost. At this point, I don't think anyone should "backup" their hard drives. They should CLONE them. At least then you could go the the backup drive and see your file structure rather than some mysterious file that need an app to break it out. I'm going to bed now. Hope by morning WD Discovery will have broken out the files in the .tibx file.

This app has been changed. Why has wd not updated it. Its a very unreliable device. sharing is hit or miss with files and folders appearing and disappearing. I am also told its been hacked and personal data allegedly stolen
