I think that disappointment over the first planting of Kernza in Sweden should not be at all surprising. The problem is not simply one of introduction of a new cultivar, but of rebuilding the soil. Root systems, microbiomes, etc. must be built. Even new organic farmers don't think that merely by shifting to organic they'll suddenly get results, it takes several years to rebuild the soil and after that it continues to be an ongoing process. I have a 'conventional' organic farmer friend in Nepal who says even after thirty years the soil hasn''t recovered fully from the damage done by chemical fertilizer, because the local grains that he has saved have not recovered their old unique smells and flavors. Natural ecosystems transformation from primary to mature climax ecosystems take decades. We have not really had time to even begin to learn how this new system works.

Good to hear that the most damaging part in agriculture is the reliance on annuals. In my region we have 4 months of rain in summer and 8 months of dry warm to hot season. To have a whole year of photosynthesis, continuous improvement of soil structure and fertility, protection against intense heat, and many other related reasons, we need to move towards perennial polyculture.

Thank you. I learned a lot. I'm going to look for kernsa seed. Would work great for me I would graze it early with my milk cow. Then let it mature, harvest seed, then have bedding straw for the winter.

Otto is one of those they call Grant Eaters who is looking for a scientific prove to explain certain events to justify the climate change theory. She is looking for a proof she is paid to find. The real science works the opposite way. And the fact that she is Oxford educated should immediately raise a flag and your bullshit filter should run at a 100% capacity while listening to this crap. Tell yanks to turn off their HAARP station and all the "climate change" events you are bragging about will disappear.

Perhaps one way to revise the capitalist system is to buy capitalist systems and lands to change them into non-profit charitable systems. However, how and who can do this if capitalistic corporations possess the bulk of the wealth needed to make such change? We need a larger sort of anti-monopoly regulation if capitalism and its wealth blocks off alternative systems from developing. I am enjoying Dr. Fraser's chapter from her new book.

I enjoy learning from Nancy's expanded view of both capitalism and socialism. The following sentiment, in particular, resonates with me, paraphrasing: After reparations for capitalism's damage, socialism must not allow any "free-riding". No free-riding on labor, care work, nature, or public goods. Wow, what does that new world look like? How does it really work? I aspire to create and live in that world, hopefully in my own lifetime.

Living in a rural area is not boring...consider life in the city...hours of commuting...work days spent in a cubicle or small room at a computer...fight for parking...fast food...and so on. This is not my life, and so I challenge you to reconsider this obvious urbancentric bias.

We awaken by asking the right questions. We awaken when we see knowledge being spread that goes against our own personal experiences. We awaken when we see popular opinion being wrong but accepted as being right, and what is right being pushed as being wrong. We awaken by seeking answers in corners that are not popular. And we awaken by turning on the light inside when everything outside feels dark. Zeljko Serdar, #CCRES
