Your garden is beautiful. I am also in So Cal Growing zone 9b and found this video so inspiring as I am embarking on a backyard edible landscape project. Do you plan on filming a more recent garden update?

전 so. 😢

I've had it growing in deep shade in my SoCal garden. In 20 years I've gone from one plant to 4. I'd hardly call that a problem. Meanwhile, it's stately and has real presence in the garden. I love it. I also have a smaller variegated version called Whitewater. It's also growing in deep shade and really brightens it up. Whitewater sends up a white stalk with pink flowers. It's gorgeous.

I am growing mine in zone 8a, NE facing garden bed. I almost lost them last year to drought and high heat. Adding a fresh layer of compost and watering frequently saved them. This year I added compost in March and will add more in late June. I also drop crushed eggshells in mid April to fend off the slugs.

I have those same ARS pruners and they've stayed sharp for years. ARS also has needle nose "fruit" pruners similar to yours. I have other brands, but love these the best.

Please note this plant traps Queen bumblebees . In Ireland and UK at least , queen's enter into the flower but cannot get out this means the next generation of this line collapses. So I am not sure if the same problem exists in the US but insect life should always trump non native species

I’m coastal zone 9 in SoCal with very mild weather. My hydrangeas keep coming back as long as they aren’t in full sun. Love them so much!

Great video! I have “old wood” hydrangea which were planted by the original homeowners. We are in the Chico, CA area which is extremely hot in the summer (95-105 F daily July thru Sept). We need to repair our stucco and I need to cut the Hydrangea down as much as possible. How far down can I hack them without causing irreparable damage? I don’t mind if they don’t blossom next springtime. I just don’t want to kill them. The stucco repair person wants to do the work the first week of November. Night time temps will be high 40’s to low 50’s (Fahrenheit). I hope you or one of your followers can give me guidance. Thank you and your gardening experts in advance-it seems you are all very experienced, very kind, and very respectful in your responses. In other words, I don’t need someone telling me I’m stupid for not understanding hydrangea. I never would have planted them because of their excessive need for water. But I adore them and want to keep them happy. If anyone can give pruning device it would be great fully accepted and acknowledged!

Thanks for videos! We really enjoy them. We are in California in zone 10A, but a little further south than you are. We have lots of new sages, salvias, hydrangeas, penstemons, leonotis, agapanthus, alstroemerias, and fruit trees in our "garden" (technically throughout the backyard). Hope to see more tips and advice, like you did in the Hydrangea video.

Amazing video! Thank you for the information! I plan on using white hydrangeas for my wedding centerpieces. I live in the central valley of California and it tends to be warm/hot in late April. I intend to have have them in a vase with water at all times. If the temperature hits upper 80s to mid 90s, how will they keep? I'm worried they might wilt. Will they be ok if they're in water the whole wedding day? Thanks!
