5000 pound would be quite reasonable for a repair on this rare product.

I used to work for a small audio company that ground part numbers off - he would charge 100x the actual part of the wholesale price of the part. I hope you are using silver solder for all the repair joints [wink].
@M0UAW_IO8315 сағат бұрын
I will admit to having ground numbers off parts on some low cost products I'd designed as add-ons for a larger, very expensive piece of diagnostic equipment after finding a staff member had stolen and copied a fairly simple double sided PCB to sell for cash to our customers, he wasn't smart enough to work out what the ground off part numbers were on other designs. (low cost being £100 and very expensive being £17,000)

All Tom Evans had to do was ignore the video, and even the Mend It Mark subscribers would have forgotten it within a week. The kind of people that would drop 25k GBP on a phono-pre would certainly have never known about it. Now it's going to be part of the "lore" of bad business behavior on audio forums along with Monster Cable and Bose.

He isn't very clever. If he was he would dismiss the idea of even looking at an amplifier that costs that ridiculous amount but he didn't. He went along and spent a lot of time and effort on a average amp, totally not worth it! He is a condescending irritant. If he were that clever, which he probably is he should design a really good amp like they used to in the 70's and keep the technology moving instead of leaving us with digital crap!
@M0UAW_IO83Күн бұрын
I mean, I'm far from an audiophile, my hearing is just not up to it, but I lived through the 70s and repaired those amps for a living, most of them were utter garbage, still are garbage and have long since been surpassed by modern technology which sounds far better for a fraction of the price. The main reason people think the amps they grew up with are great is because they have rose tinted memories and the lack any kind of definition and obscure the source material under a thick layer of mushy bass which 'sounds good' to people who don't realise they're deluding themselves.
@squicker2 күн бұрын
The entire audiophile market is a scam on very gullible people. I love the 'audiophile network cables'. Err, they're Cat6, like the £10.99 ones from Maplin, but if you want to spend £2500 on them for a 'more open sound stage', or some other audiowank, please be my guest!
@M0UAW_IO83Күн бұрын
I largely agree, the audiophile market is riddled with extremely dodgy claims backing up price tags which would have me seeking legal advice about power of attorney if I found any of my friends or relatives paying them. For example, you can buy 13 amp UK fuses at the bargain price of only £8000 each (that's not a typo, that's eight thousand GB Pounds each, google for Quantum Science Audio (QSA) Gold Extreme Level UK Mains Fuse). The pre-amp featured does at least make an effort to use proven engineering principles even if the implementation and construction appear rather dubious in our opinions and we are all aghast at the price.

@clockdva202 күн бұрын
He should be glad someone other than himself can fix this item. Cuts his workload down, whatever the background before it was sent to this KZbin channel or however it got so damaged. Tom Evans would have been served better just swallowing the costs and paying for it to be repaired as a gesture of good faith. Instead getting the Video pulled and then threatening legal action. Then having a shit storm of a backlash that went way beyond just various social media channels but even into the main stream media and major News channels across the world. Bringing his high end laying bare the build quality and questionable quoted performances statistics, for a 25000 pound amp. Sometimes it pays to think of the results of your actions before you take action and is there a better less damaging route. Now that is too late.

I absolutely hate tantalum capacitors, they grow internally, I've had them turn microphonic, become resistors, short circuit, but by far the best is when there's just a pair of leads sticking up out of the board and a little pile of ash, so I don't have to look at the stupid thing.
@M0UAW_IO83Күн бұрын
Colleague of mine has a scar on his forefinger because he discovered the 'singing' noise in a SMPSU was coming from a tantalum cap. He also discovered he could vary the pitch by squeezing it. Just before it exploded and forced a shard of epoxy into his finger.

I don't hate Tom, far from it, I respect anyone who puits that much effort in and finds their niche because I've designed and built small batch electronics equipment for sale in the long distant past and it's bloody thankless, what I hate is the way he's weaponised the KZbin copyright system to cover his backside.

At the end of the day a fool and his/her money are easily parted, if anyone spends this kind of money on a phono pre-amp then good luck to them :D For those of us that can see these overpriced audiophile products for what they are, we can be smug with our DIY phono preamps using high quailty components for 1% of the price!

PS, With how thick that top half was. You would have thought. He would have Pushed Bolts, like the ones holding the four legs on. Through the Bottom. Right through the Posts of the Circuit Boards. And Into Inserts In the top Casing. Holding the Whole thing together from Inside. You could also put Rubber buffers on the top and bottom to tighten things a little more, and stop vibration from outside the unit as well.

This is what chatgpt has to say: The alleged false copyright claims likely backfired, as they drew more attention to the controversy surrounding Tom Evans Audio Design and their products. This phenomenon, commonly known as the Streisand Effect, occurs when attempts to suppress information inadvertently amplify its visibility and public interest. Discussions in forums have highlighted how such actions can harm a brand’s reputation, with audiophiles and potential customers taking note of the company's handling of criticism Instead of mitigating negative perceptions, these claims appear to have sparked further debate and scrutiny, possibly deterring some customers. A transparent and constructive approach to addressing feedback would likely have been more effective in maintaining goodwill among consumers.

I once left a subscription from Germany. I like channels like this and you make a competent impression with well-founded explanations. In Germany, the channel “VE99 Online” is comparable. To be honest, he's not at the same level of preparation. A lot of know-how when it comes to tube technology and a trained radio and television technician. With a semi-professional workshop like yours. I think the original buyer paid 25,000 British pounds for it. For him it's religion anyway. He's just happy that everything is okay again. At least everything was easily accessible and easy to repair for trained radio and television technicians.
