Triplex acies just does not work in a tangible battle unless you outnumber the enemy.. that's because the enemy line will always be wider than yours. I have a hard time believing the Romans actually used it in battle because it immediately gives up the flank. They likely moved up in formation and then distributed the legions in a wider formation once the battlefield is reached
@TWSummaryКүн бұрын
@TopGun42069 the triplex aces is a hotly debated topic on how it really worked. As a Romaboo myself, if I had a time machine, my first destination would be a battle to witness it at work. However, I do believe it was used in a particular triple way, as stated by the source. And there is, after all , saying, "It has come down to the Triarii." This saying wouldn't make much sense if they all fought together. What's more is that the Triarii were noted to have been forced to kneel to curb their eagerness to join battle. There is a debate on whether the Roman's maintained the checkered formation in combat or whether they spread their lines just before engagement. Either belief is not wrong or right, it's just unknown. Technically a checkered formation would leave gaps intentionally for the principes to fill. If an enemy decided to go into the gap, they could potentially be surrounded on three sides. What's more is that the numbers make sense. Each Roman army consisted of two legions (a roman and social equivalent) totalling a width of 400m whilst in triplex aces, while in dense formation. At Cannae the Romans had 4 armies (8 legions) and the recorded width was around 1.6 km which sums up perfectly. What's more is that the Roman formation had more depth than width, something which Hannibal exploited.

Imperial Legion similar to marian one (basic 9 cohorts 1 eagle cohort) however more localized for example, take romanised galic cohorts if legion is recriuted in Gaul. Same in Pannonia, Syria, Hispania, Asia minor and so on. Rest is mosty the same. The more rome has conquered, the more it relied on foreigners.
@nikelaos57923 күн бұрын
Marian Legion set up again to be historically acurate: 1 first eagle cohort 9 same legion cohort(all legions order of battle has 10 cohorts) 1- artillery unit 3 cavalery(mostly foreign orgin) 2 shock 1 horse skimishers 3 foot skimishers also mostly foreign orgin. 2 auxiliary mosty spearman on the wings of main body of legion. General: mosty cav.
@TWSummary3 күн бұрын
@nikelaos5792 Artillery was not used that extensively and also the auxiliary setup is a bit too less. You are right about the 1 eagle 9 regular cohorts. However, with a 20 unit army, you can't really do this because the Auxilia to Roman ratio was actually 50 50.
@TWSummary3 күн бұрын
@nikelaos5792 what I would say is 7 cohorts (1 of which is eagle) 5 auxilia cohorts (2 spear flank or screen 3 melee usually reserves) 1 general 3 auxilia cav 2 auxilia skirmishers 2 auxilia slingers/archers

@@TWSummary Ok maybe in the beginning of the cohort marian system(after defeating cibrii) but in later decades?! In Gaius Julis Caesar Conquest of Gaul artillery in every legion was a standard. In the field battle and in defence of city or fort. Of course auxilia are all not explicit roman units so it mean cav to.(again) Ceasar used germanic cav to achieve victory of in final battle during siege of Alesia. But the basic should be 10 cohorts. if that dont leave enough space to diversity make 2 armies. Although in late republic early empire Marian legion is between 107 and 27 B.C. two consuls game were not as strict like in previous centuries. Thats the periods where military leaders gain more and more power over the state and its intitutions.
@nikelaos5792Күн бұрын
@@Wha2les Try my,(compositions in the other coments) and moreover: Polybian pair your armies 1 roman 1 socii(becouse 2 consuls). After conquest of Taras make - "allied capital" in there and build auxilia barracks -thats the way to have socii units, Also build auxilia barracks in Asculum. So in both provinces u can recruit socii. (Asculum during war with allies 91-88 B.C. was capital of anti-roman italian confederation - so... history :-) Marian: 10 cohort base with different auxilia (depends where is stationed) and x1artillery mostly scorpion. Imperial: 10 cohort base, recruit units -incuding legionary infatry- from provinces not in italy, becouse After roman civil wars, italians were reluctant twards military service. The last attempt to recuit army in italy was made by emperor Tiberius during wars with germanic tribes. Draft was intensively protested by the mob and droped. No one try to do that again to the end of empire. Only exempt was Pretorian guard. Also remember thet emperors were quite touchy and sensitive individuals. In order to protect their power any military force were not allowed to be stationed in provinces of Italian peninsula(incuding Galia Cisalpina) Makedonia/Hellas, Sicyly, Iliria and Galia Narbonensis. Why? So if any general revlolt, emperor would have time to bring to Italy troops loyal to him and fight of pretender to the trone. Ok, thats for start. Deal with that.👌 Roma Invicta!!!
@nikelaos57923 күн бұрын
I think more historically army set up(polibyan) wolud be: 5 velites 5 hastati 5 principes 2 equites 2 triarii Commander unit: pretorians (if he has perk - brutal) then we have more or less actual division acording to the records (triarii was half of combined number for principes same with hastati and velites) Cav bodyguards - any other character perk.
@TWSummary3 күн бұрын
@nikelaos5792 correct. That's almost very accurate but slightly less on the cav. Also, it leaves no room for auxilia like archers or slingers, both of which Romans used. Historically, there is no set army composition but a lose template with some variations. What you described is one such template. For example, at Cannae, Roman cavalry was massively ratioed by their infantry. But at Zama, things were different. So within the same era itself, you see a huge difference in the composition. Personally, I would go for 1 general 3 cavalry (auxilia) 2 velites 4 hastati 4 principes 2 triarii (this is more the correct ratio of half strength) 2 archers/slingers (auxilia) 4 auxilia infantry (like Iberians or Celts who fought alongside Rome)
@nikelaos5792Күн бұрын
@@TWSummary Yes, however I did't mention that was composition of ROMAN mid-republican legion. That is important becouse there were another force fighting for eternal city; Socii "allies" of the republi. All this italian tribes forced by Rome during conquest of penisula to become its "ally". Socii were obligated by their patron to participate in its campaigns and bring to the fight same number of infantry and 2x more cavalry then Rome. We don't have many records about how Socii troops were organized or trained. But most propably it was similar or copy of the roman system(manipular system). SO! For historical autheticity sake I make always TWO 20 unit armies when play Rome. 1 "pure" roman like above and one Socii army in with the following composition: -5 socii hastati -5 principes samnitici -2 pedites extraordinarii -4 cav mostly socii equites and equites extraordinarii(but also others) -3 skimishers(slingers, archers etc. what is in the "menu" of AOR) -commander - remember romans have 2 consuls they send with army so thats why two armies it brings more options to the fight for example: 1 army sidges the hostile city and the other block or pushes away any relive attempts. I think this is the most historicaly close as possible in the game for the time period.
@nikelaos5792Күн бұрын
@@TWSummary "at Cannae, Roman cavalry was massively ratioed by their infantry. But at Zama, things were different." Right but U remeber that at Cannae consul Lucius Aemilius Paullus order his riders to dismount becouse they prefer to fight on foot(he pay with his life for this decision). Romans for most of their history were poor horse riders. So to be accurate we should dismount equites cav when the battle occured? Its no extraordianary to hire foreign units {in history to} (cav and skimishers) who now the terrain, local habits, water sources and so on... So if campainig in Africa take numidian cav mercs to your army even elephants(but not to crazy). This composition I presented are merely pattern for making historicaly accurate experience.

I was just a kid when I purchased my first PC game ever. That game was Rome Total War. I distinctly remember buying it just because the cover looked cool, lol.. Spent countless hours playing, until eventually I moved on to other games, and haven't played it again since... Now, nearly 20 years later, I purchased ROME 2 on steam during the winter sale, and have been playing in my spare time nearly every day. Before ROME 2, I noticed that I was beginning to lose interest in video games, despite being an avid gamer for 20+ years. I felt less motivated to boot up a game, and even when I did eventually find the motivation to play, I'd only be able to play for an hour or so before getting bored. Thankfully, ROME 2 reignited my passion for gaming. I've been enjoying ROME 2 so much that I even started watching videos and reading books about Roman history! Anyways.. I just wanted to let you know that this series has been an absolute joy to watch. I love that you are trying to play as historicalyl accurate as possible. I also particularly enjoy and appreciate your insightful commentary as you play. I could tell how much effort was put into making these wonderful videos. Thank you, Summary! Excited to finish the rest of the series!! Haha.
