My father (Bennie L Simpkins of Saluda, SC) was also a member of this group. I grew up with them rehearsing in my basement in NE DC, through the 70's, 80's and into the early 90's. Other members of the group included: Dec. James Holcomb, Dec. Rollie Bryant, Dec. Lee Blake, Dec. Aaron Footman & later on Rev. Robert Bland joined the group as well. Unfortunately, all of these exceptionally talented, loving, God fearing men (except for Rv. Robert Bland) have passed.

Lovely track! Interesting that there seems to have been two groups named The Heavenly Band in Chicago recording around the same time.

For we wrestle not against Flesh and Blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Pace & Blessing, to the family of "our one true living Lord of Host". HalleluYah.

So, when was this song actually sung is not totally known ? So it's interesting that we exist in multiple time frames curtesy of our tech. thanks for the upload. I listened on a Sunday morning and the singers did a fine performance.

It's reasonable to assume that this was recorded around 1979 based on the QCA number (the 90949 on the label and in the runouts). QCA was the record pressing plant that pressed the record, and that number indicates that it was pressed in 1979. While of course one can record a track, sit on it, and release it years later, it's far more common for groups to record tracks and then release them as soon as possible. That's especially true for these kinds of "custom pressings" because of how the business usually operated. A group on a larger label like Peacock might record a dozen tracks in a session and release them over time, but for a record like this, the group probably paid for a package that included recording two songs and pressing a single. Unless a record presents a specific reason to think otherwise, you can make a very strong educated guess about the recording date if you know the manufacturing date. Unfortunately, there's very little contemporaneous information about most of the records I post. If you collect pop records, you can use Billboard or other trade magazines to date records, but small label gospel records like this never appeared in any trade magazine. Nearly fifty years later, manufacturing dates are the best thing to go on.

@YouDontHaveToRide - thanks, that's fascinating and excellent to know, there is a rhyme or reason to how all things flow, i'm glad we can surf at this beach if we're able, I want to hear and know more about this most human fable, For me it's both music key and pure joy, that soothes the soul of this boy To hear sweet voices that join heavenly choir, If i said different, you could call me a liar, God's Will be done by night and day, that all spirits together learn to pray.

thank you for your upload and your explanation of your purpose in uploading. I agree with what you said. Excellence should be recognized. Where we have come from, should be remembered. It is our job to convey to the younger ones the messages of the older ones, and the ones who have passed this way before us. I did not have this music in my growing up time, but I wish I did. So I am very glad I am able to hear it now. There has been a continuous line of beauty and excellence coming out of the black experience from the blues to jazz, from gospel to pop, and it all connects for me. I started out listening to Leadbelly and Southern (prison) blues, and thanks to Pop's record collection, Billie Holiday (Strange Fruit), and many others, (Nina Simone), but I never saw the connection. Later on the map of music fell into shape with the eternal struggle of humans, in our case in America, and very specifically the struggle of people of color to gain simple recognition of their great humanity. I may not be saying anything you do not already know, but recently a key fell into my hands that I think explains a lot. Western man, European man, and Western philosophy is connected to hundreds of years of history and maybe some bad logic. Rene Descartes famously said, "I think, therefore, I am". I am simplifying greatly here. In African culture, in the Xhosa and Buntu language there is a word, "ubuntu" which translates as, "I am, because we are". The emphasis on our relationships to each other is somehow missing in European culture and philosophy. Of course in Jesus, it is reunited, but most folks do not know about about Descartes and ubuntu. Let's pray they learn and know about Jesus. Thank you for all you do.
