They did for a little bit but due to delays with the 701s, 2 units which were meant to go to Southeastern have been held back to increase capacity on the SWR network

"Not really sure what this one was doing but what I do know is it was an East Midlands Railway Class 222 running empty into London St Pancras International" Well you did kinda gave the answer yourself. EMR uses platform 3 and 4 at Kentish Town to keep their units out of st pancras' to keep the platforms free until its needed back at st pancras. Its probably easier than sending it to Cricklewood. So for example on a weekday the unit used for 1B49 1250 NOT-STP (arr 1427) is then used for 1D53 1535 STP-NOT. If they didnt run the ECS to Kentish Town, then that unit would be occupying a platform (or rather half) for 1 hour and 8 minutes.
