Very cool build flavour but my worry would be keeping concentration, we have low ac for a front fighter and only 13 con till lvl 8 with shield being the only thing we have to help on con saves. Choosing stone goliath could help mitigate this but I'm not sure that would be enough, I might be inclined to get lucky instead of tough to patch up this weakness further.

@@richardrdotson I agree there are things in 2024 that don’t work well. Conjure Minor Elementals is the worst offender in my eyes. But what don’t you like about Nick? Is it the wording making it unclear which weapon makes the Nick attack, or something else?

@ it shows to me they know “two weapon fighting” does not exist in 5, but instead of just saying ‘you attack with both weapons’ they went this convoluted route in 5.5. If they won’t fix this, they won’t fix the overpowered spells, or others. Great video though. Don’t let me get you down.

@ No worries! I’m always happy to talk rule opinions. For awhile I thought a fun fix would be, if you are attacking with both weapons it’s still one attack, but you add both weapons damage dice. But your modifier only once. So if you’re dual wielding short swords it’s 2d6, same as a Greatsword. Could get convoluted with magic weapons though. Then with the old version of Dual Wielder feat you could use two longswords for 2d8 per hit. Slightly better than a greatsword, but still less damage than a Great Weapon Master.
@richardrdotson
@richardrdotson 4 күн бұрын
@ we took inspiration from 3.5 for two weapon fighting, but locked non-light weapons behind fighter, and said two handed weapons get double str to dmg. The magic weapon is accounted for with the per person limit. Yes, a two weapon fighter can have two +5 weapons, but that’s half their max magic item so will be less in defense and/or attribute buff.

I'm confused by your attack breakdown. Action: 1st attack: Bite and use empower 2nd Attack: empowered shortsword True Strike with Vex Bonus action: Scimitar (or dagger) attack with advantage and Nick for another Scimitar attack. That's 4 attacks using your Atrack and Bonus actions. When you take the Dual Wielder feat you mention it allows you to use the Bite attack on your bonus action, which is true. However, you also say this now allows 2 bite attacks. How is that possible without giving up the Shortsword attack?
@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds
@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds 4 күн бұрын
@@JohnMoyle-b8f We never end up making a bonus action scimitar or dagger attack. Once we have both Extra attack and Weapon mastery we can make 3 attacks on the action. Then with the dual wielder feat we can make a bite attack as a bonus action. @@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds This is where I get confused. You're first attack is a Bite, your second is truestrike with Vex. The Light weapon property allows you to make a 2nd weapon attack with a different light weapon as a bonus action, when you take the attack action using a light weapon. Nick says when you make the extra attack of the light property as part of that attack action rather than as a bonus action. They way it reads to me, nothing is triggering Nick, because a weapon with the Nick property wasn't used via the attack action. What am I missing?
@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds

@ You’re definitely catching onto the unclear wording of the Nick Mastery. Other mastery properties specify “With this Weapon” Nick doesn’t say that. I see it as the Nick weapon makes the additional attack, sort of like fitting an extra Nick into your attack. But other people read it like how you are, with the Nick weapon needing to originate the attack. The rules don’t exactly specify which is right! Some people think it can be either or. If we go with your ruling, just make the true strike attack with the scimitar, and the Nick attack with the Shortsword. Maybe they’ll fix the wording in a future errata!

By the old (2014 rules😅) I dipped 2 lvls into stars and 1 lvl of order cleric since that opens up a whole lot of fun with the wizards spell list, much like Treantmonks god wizard build (1 order cleric/X gear oriented sorcerer or divine soul), but because of stars druid we have chalice. So when we cast healing word/wither and bloom for our downed ally, we actually cast it on a different ally that gets to make the reaction attack and we heal the downed ally with the chalice healing. 😂😅😊 I really wanted this wizard to eventually get the Sword of the Paruns (an ally can make a reaction attack whenever you take the attack action), but that's a longsword! So we are making an STR bladesinger and with tortle the AC won't suffer from abandoning DEX and with this level spread we still get Wish. 😊

@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds Depends on whether we crit, since then it could be it with the increased damage or we could abuse the extra effect from the other smite spells. If you want adding a third class (like a druids spike growth) is fine, just as long as the majority is in paladin and monk. For example conquest and new elements monk long unarmed strikes and flight (by level 11) we can fly above them (locking down their movement options thanks to sentinel feat) hit them from a distance with wrathful smite making it impossible to move. Levels in warlock can also help a lot with the MADness of stats (genie even gets spike growth) and your aura's could help you a lot with your saves making evation even better and in this regard ancients might have a leg up. While I gave the examples of conquest or genie, I think it would actually be more interesting if we could stick to the 2024 rules without backwards compatibility, otherwise the doors are wide open (undead warlock1/conquest paladin8/long death monk11 on a dhampir and the story/theme writes itself) especially if we were to open the door to gestalt or multi-way gestalt campaign builds and third party published contend (I'm referring to something like Sebastian's guide to Drakkenheim, which I have and it's really tempting since it has a really good ⅓ spellcaster monk in the same vein as eldritch knight and arcane trickster, as well as polearm monk wielding glaives and halberds and such making weapon masteries even better), but THE MORE YOU restrict your options, THE MORE your creativity will get to SHINE and your channel could use more subscriber and it's more in line with the channels name. I hope this gave some good ideas, if you have any diffeculties/lack of inspiration let me know. 😉😁

When I cast four elements ki spells like burning Hands, it would trigger a Wild Magic Surge. The Sorcerer Cantrips were reserved for Gust, Shape Water, Mold Earth, & Control Flames. The only problem I see with this build is that it is very bonus action heavy. You need a bonus action to use Shillelagh, a bonus action if you want to use Hunter's Mark, and a bonus action if you want your Beast Companion to do anything other than dodge (unless you give up one of your attacks to give it an attack). Now if you're just rekying on the beasts to attack, while you cast support spells with your action, this isn't a problem. Also, I'm not sure about the spell level progression of 2 half casters. Also, you're relying on 2 different spell casting modifiers which are, for most of this build, 2 different numbers. That being said, I really like this build, but I wouldn't recomend it for a beginning player.

I did a similar build about 5 years ago, a Long Tooth Shifter Beast Barbarian, but didn’t end up playing them in that campaign. In our current campaign, I’m play a very different Werewolf, a Changeling Moon Druid 2 Beast Barbarian 5 Long Death Monk. This build is also a Werewolf from lvl1, via the Changeling’s Shapechange racial and the Primal Savagery cantrip. At lvl 2 go Moon Druid (2014) and Wildshape into a Brown Bear for the multi attack, and stand up on two legs as a werewolf via Shapechange. Go Barbarian for three levels to go Path of the Beast, and Wildshape into a Dire Wolf. You now have two 2d6+Str+Rage due to being large. Go Monk for Martial Arts and you now have 3-4 claw attacks. I went to Barb 5 to grab the subclass features, but that’s not necessary, just the lvl4 ASI is necessary. I went Long Death for the theme as it grants a “howl” to induce fear, and the ability to gain Temp HP as well as just ignoring death as long as you have Ki. With extra attack you go up to 4-5 claw attacks, and at lvl17 or 18 you are dealing 2d8+Str+Rage on each hit that you always have advantage on. Your AC is Con+Dex or the beast’s AC (which ever is better) or Dex+Wis when your Wis and Dex out pace your Con (Dire Wolf has a better Dex, Brown Bear has a better Con). You also have a knockdown attack via the Dire Wolf’s 2d6+Str+Rage bite that knocks an enemy prone on a failed Str save (low DC of 13, so it’s not the best option). This is the Werewolf I’m currently playing. I haven’t translated it over to 2024.

Our moto is “That which doesn’t kill us … should run.” We are currently at lvl7, and have liberated four towns/cities from forces oppressing those trapped here with us (spell jamming ships trying to leave explode at 20,000 feet altitude). At each location we recruit a local chapter of the Troop, leaving behind a garrison while taking volunteers with us. We are nominally working for the Industrial Guild (an alliance of races that control commerce between city states in the Scraper Kingdom) and fighting on their behalf against the Brewers (dwarves controlling steam tech clockwork automatons). Other factions we’ve encountered are the Arboreal Empire (treants, all the trees are sentient, I made a deal with them so that they transmit coded communications for us via Semaphore), the Gung-ho Guns (a monastery of gun fighting Monks with artifacts that merge melee weapons with firearms), the Dark City (Necromancers), the Atlantean Confederation (all the aquatic races living at the bottom of a sea sized lake), and the Vampirates (vampire spell jamming pirates that are allowed to leave the world after they “tithe” sentients to the Mycelium, a sentient fugal colony that is trying to move Neverland so it can invade another planet and is the BBEG of the story). There are more factions we haven’t met yet. Sourcing food is difficult because almost every living thing on the world is sentient. Cheese and milk products from the mammal races, Thri-Kreen produce mead from their honey, there are small vegetable plots that are difficult to keep alive without magic because the world is in perpetual twilight. as a 1st level spell I would take "false life" to have more temporary hit points, since unfortunately "shield" is no longer possible because it necessarily requires a spell that uses a single action (no bonus action, no reaction) as 2lv I would take either "mirror image" because it doesn't require to upcast, or "warding wind" could be fun to give disadvantage to ranged attacks and deafen spellcasters (essentially the silence spell)

My first 5e character was a Tortle Light Cleric 1/ Celestial Warlock for the rest of the build, so I could stack Shield of Faith with a shield, granting a 21 AC at lvl 1. Was such a fun character! He worshipped the sun until he needed more power, so made a deal with his god (hence Warlock), and I had a blast casting fire spells while tanking and healing for the party. If I were to rebuild him for 2024, would probably go Bladesinger with a 4 level Fighter dip, although the Circle of the Dragon Druid from the Griffin’s Saddlebag may be a better fit as a straight class build to capture the same feel as the origin character.

@@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds I do have a small Aasimar Sun Soul 18/ Bladesinger 2 build that I built for a “Littles” one-shot (a “Littles” game is where everyone plays a small character). Being able to stack Wis, Int, and Dex on a character that shoots lasers with their hands is a great concept, but we do points buy, and it’s difficult to cap three stats with a non-Fighter build. If I were to rebuild her in 2024, I would go Monk 12/Wizard 4 to net two epic boons, or just go straight Monk to net a 24 Dex and Wis.

as soon as you try to make a bonus action attack with a staff as a polearm, it should end bladesong. It is silly to think that you're striking with a staff in one hand then somehow striking with the opposite end (as is described in the feat) with the same hand. Whenever you make an attack with using 2 hands, bladesong ends. Instead you could use a club and another light weapon. cast shillelagh on your club and use it for your bonus attack and a main action attack. The other main action attack can be made with true strike to keep it intelligence based. This doesn't conflict with bladesong and saves you a feat while giving you the same number of attacks.

that extra feat could be weapon mastery for a light weapon with nick. that gives you back your bonus action and you still make 3 attacks.
@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds
@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds Ай бұрын
@@ericrbacher9371 I see where you are coming from! I had the same hang up when I was theory crafting a hoplite character that used a spear and shield plus polearm master. If the visual doesn’t look right, it’s hard to get invested in a character. But with quarterstaffs there is a wealth of one handed technique videos out there to give examples of how it might look. I personally like the visualize it as an attack action diagonal swing downward, from shoulder to hip. Then rotate the wrist and jab with the opposite end. And that position also sets you up for the extra attack being an upward and diagonal swing along the same path as the first attack. Also it pays to remember these weapon types in the PHB are extreme generalizations. What the rules call a quarterstaff can be anything from a 6 foot long Bo staff, to a 3 foot long Tanbo. At the end of the day, flavor is free. So as long as the rules allow it, we can visualize and flavor the characters actions in whatever way makes sense to us.

@@ericrbacher9371 That would be a good direction to go, dual wielding almost like a TMNT Rafael aesthetic. Unfortunately with that Nick attack, there’s no way to attack with Intelligence. So we’d need some Dexterity or Strength investment.

I’d highly recommend taking fighter 1. It gives u way too much, Ik your behind one level but it’s too worth it. Gaining con prof and weapon mastery is too much to lose out on. Weapon master basically gives u an extra attack and it keeps your bonus action open. Then u take duel wielder at level 4 and boom 3 attacks at level 5 and then 4 and level 7. If u use shadow blade this gives u 3 shadow blade attacks once u get extra attack and that’s too much to give up. For race id highly recommend doing a flying race of the dm allows it. If not either drgaonbourne or assimar will be good. U don’t wanna waste concentration flying for whenever you fight flying enemies. If u don’t do the flying then u gotta do an elf for Elvin arc bc u will get so much adv with shadow blade at night/dim light and with your familiar granting u adv and one of your weapon master giving u adv on a hit too, u have so much adv to not use an elf. I see why u picked tortoe bc of that 17 AC plus blade song but it’s not worth it when those other races are an option.

I think the whole point here was to build a very different Bladesinger who does not need to rely on Dex at all. Two weapon fighting and the new Nick property will not work with Shillelagh and a quarterstaff or club. I think this is a different take, and may not be as powerful for straight damage, but gives some nice other benefits.

No offense, but I'm tired of bladesingers. It was one thing when it was limited to elves, and it had a cultural significance. Ever since they opened it up to anybody, it's the default gish build. Even the novelty of being a tortle doesn't make this interesting to me. With all the cool builds you could have made with the 2024 wizard subclasses, you went with bladesinger. Oh, well, it looks pretty good. Boring, but good. See ya on the next one.

Do you mean the same 2024 wizard that has no new subclasses? The 2024 PHB invalidates everything that came before, causing buying the previous books to retroactively be wastes. Not to mention, the gap widened significantly, J Craw is anti-race mixing, and Ranger got nerfed into the ground.

I hear you. Getting rid of half-elves and half-orcs in favor of orcs and goliaths was a terrible decision. And I get that you don't like the 2024 revisions. But the four wizard subclasses are good and not a hybrid subclass like bladesinger. He could have done a conjuration wizard or even a transmutation wizard and I would be more interested. Like PAM, XBE, hexblades, bladesingers are the optimizers' default picks, and I'm tired of them.
