This was based on weapons of the 1960's-80's. What we, and they, have now make Hiroshima and Nagasaki look like hand grenades. The principle of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) still persists, and with missiles that can deliver bigger payloads more quickly. It would probably be all over in 45 minutes.
