Fantastic interview. Been a huge fan and supporter of Eleine for over 3 years, and am also a Patron. Got to see them Live for the 1st time last May. Amazing band, and Madeleine and Rikard are 2 of the nicest, most humble people you will ever meet. They deserve this upcoming headline tour. Enjoyed watching :)

What I find really interesting about this video is that it’s the only one of the Fear of Fear videos that was made by Soiritbox’s long-time friend and close collaborator, Dylan Hryciuk, who is the creative genius of Versa Films. I was so glad to see they’re still working with him. He and they produced an astonishing masterpiece of a video for their track Constance (heartbreaking storytelling). He’s produced many of their earlier videos - in the one for Blessed Be, Dylan captures a particular expression of Courtney’s which we see in this video too, during the blue-lit section. It’s somehow vulnerable and tugs at the heartstrings. She’s obviously feeling the emotion of the lyrics she wrote. As for the track itself, beautiful. With these swelling, expansive choruses, I go from goosebumps to eyes full of tears - but I’m happy!

Good question, all 3 of their bands are worth checking out, and this is a challenge so I will give 2 options for each as I honestly can't pick haha. League of Distortion - Wolf or Lamb, or My Revenge (Wolf or Lamb has an amazing video) Visions of Atlantis - Clocks or Melancholy Angel (Clocks has an amazing video) Phantom Elite - Inner Beast or Apex (both videos are amazing)

If you asked me before it would have been Amanda hands down, but now it's very difficult, Anna is still the depth of their arrangements, Clemi legato and phrasing is insanely good, Marina has extraordinary dynamic control which benefits her in live situations. Dynamic control is the thing I admire most so it would be Marina but it's close, razor thin.

Welcome to Spirirtbox, my friend. I adore every one of these musicians and the art they give to the world. The first work I heard by Courtney was IWABO in 2013 and have been obsessed with them since. Their musical output during quarantine and getting to experience it with total strangers on a massive scale (via watching tons of reaction videos) was practically the only way I felt connected to other people in the ensuing hell years. I've had favorite bands come and go, but the next one will be hard-pressed to dethrone Spiritbox. I hope you get to more of the cartalogue. <3

A really excellent reaction and analysis - I love watching people react to Spiritbox, and especially seeing someone discover them for the first time. This comment has turned into an overly long, meandering essay, but I hope it's of some use or interest if you can manage to read it all the way through without falling asleep (maybe it'll be useful as a cure for insomnia if not!) - it's what I've picked up over my time of following their work! I've been a fan since July 2020, when like many, I happened across the video for Holy Roller, their first single released from their first (and so far only) full-length album, Eternal Blue - they released two EPs and two stand-alone singles before it. Four more singles from Eternal Blue preceded the album's release in September 2021, as it was delayed by the pandemic. Since Eternal Blue, there's been a one-off collaboration with EDM musician Illenium for the single Shivering (I don't typically like EDM, but that was really good, I thought), then they released the 3-track Spiritbox EP Rotoscope. Jaded is the second single, following The Void, pre-releasing from their forthcoming 6-track EP The Fear of Fear, due for release on 3 November 2023. They've been touring almost constantly for at least a year too. Since you asked, Courtney's surname has a silent e at the end (it's a French Canadian name, though she originally hails from Alabama - her mother remarried and the family moved to Canada). She and her husband Mike Stringer (the guitarist in this video) married in 2016, having been a couple for at least 5 years at that point and good friends before that. Courtney initially sang lead vocals (and sometimes played keyboard!) in the band Unicron with her brother Jackson LaPlante, from 2008-2012. A late track from that band has a music video available - it's called Broken Vessels and is rather a good song (at least in my opinion), less intentionally chaotic than Unicron's earlier tracks - it seems to give a flavour of Spiritbox's future sound, which is interesting as if so, it shows how much of that comes from Courtney (Mike wasn't in Unicron). She was recruited by the US band Iwrestledabearonce (IWABO) to replace their lead vocalist, Krysta Cameron, in 2012 when Krysta left to start a family, and became a permanent replacement. Mike Stringer also joined IWABO in 2015 as rhythm guitarist, from his previous band, Fall in Archaea. There are three music videos I've seen from IWABO with Courtney - Boat Paddle, Green Eyes and Gift of Death, all with very different styles. Mike appears in Gift of Death too, if you look very hard! With the exception of Gift of Death, where it's perhaps the case that the camera lingers rather too suggestively on Courtney, you were correct - she avoids being objectified, as she isn't comfortable with such approaches and is very concerned that women in the industry are treated with the respect that all people deserve. Courtney and Mike decided to leave IWABO in 2015, wanting to follow their own musical path. They married in 2016 and launched Spiritbox in late 2017, having been preparing whilst working normal jobs. They were joined by original bassist Bill Crook and were at first helped out by IWABO drummer Mikey Montgomery, before Ryan Loerke took over drumming duties for quite a long period (though he was never officially a full band member). He left due to other commitments and full-time current band member Zev Rose from Philadelphia joined during the pandemic, having to work with them remotely at first because of the world situation. Bassist Bill Crook left by mutual consent (as far as I know on friendly terms) in early 2022, and was replaced by Josh Gilbert (formally of the now-defunct band As I Lay Dying), initially as their touring bassist, but he is now a full band member and apparently provides very impressive backing vocals in live performances too. Though there is no doubt a level of collaboration between all members, Mike Stringer writes all the instrumental music for Spiritbox and is a very talented multi-instrumentalist himself. Courtney composes the lyrics and also her vocal melodies. I've noticed that she has a darkly poetic and metaphorical style in her lyrics. She says some are based on personal experience, but can also be based on imagining herself into the position of other characters, either real or generalised. She has also said that she welcomes listeners interpreting them in a way that they find fits their personal experience and needs. She's open about suffering from bouts of anxiety, depression and self-doubt. She and Mike seem to be a very close and supportive couple, extremely nice people - I've noticed that in interviews, each tends to highlight the skills of the other above their own. In her earlier career, though she didn't mention it very often in interviews, Courtney once mentioned she injured her vocal cords before she knew the correct techniques for harsh vocals and carried the results of that for 8 years or so. She was consequently very careful to learn correct techniques and also to protect her voice at all times, but was nevertheless coming to a point where she was trying to make the difficult decision of whether to risk surgery. Very luckily, the problem finally resolved itself in the winter of 2020, relieving her of that decision and also of the need for surgery. Courtney has several really impressive live one-take vocal videos which show her actual technique when yelling (as she calls her harsh vocals) - I particularly like the one for the first stand-alone single between the early EPs and the Eternal Blue album, which is Rule of Nines (great sense of humour on show! in that one's live one-take) and the one for Circle With Me (a very popular single from Eternal Blue) in which she showcases some amazing vocal transitions that outdo the studio version of it. There are others too, and Mike produces live guitar play-through videos too. I think Zev has done at least one drumming play-through as well. There's a nice collection on KZbin of three 3-song black and white videos of a live concert that Spiritbox made for Liquid Metal (Sirius XM Radio) a couple of years ago from their Canadian home studio (Courtney, Mike and Bill) with Zev in Philadelphia spliced in, in post-production (looking rather underwhelmed, as his first take was lost due to a technical glitch and he had to re-do it!). Spiritbox music videos have been in all sorts of styles, some straightforward (or more imaginative) performance types, others very cinematic, and other styles between, with quite simple but artistic visualisers for all the album-only tracks on Eternal Blue. Videos made in collaboration with video director Dylan Hryciuk (Versa Films in Canada), a close friend, are very interesting: in order (and I may accidentally miss some), Versa Films produced the beautifully scenic one for Perennial, a more straightforward performance one (with very impressive makeup approaches) for Bleach Bath, the very cinematic and atmospheric video for the second standalone single, Blessed Be, then the incredibly emotional story-driven video for Constance (from Eternal Blue) which is drawn directly from the real-life experience of both Courtney and video director Dylan and relates to their grandmothers and shines a spotlight on a very important subject (it merits a very careful viewing, watching the background, and results in tears for many viewers). Then there is the eerie and disturbing cinematic video for Hurt You (also from Eternal Blue) which doesn't feature the band themselves but actors, in a mini-horror film that Dylan Hyrciuk conceived. But many of their other videos with other directors and producers are also very impressive. Even the visualiser video for their second-most recent single, The Void, is more than a typical visualiser. One video particularly worthy of mention, I think, is the one for Holy Roller, the first single pre-released from Eternal Blue. Due to the lockdown, the band made it themselves, in the style of "found footage". Mike filmed the outdoor shots on his phone, and props were borrowed from the recent wedding of friends. Courtney's very impressive make up looks were done by Ashley Crook, the wife of their original bassist, Bill. Her hands also appear in a role in the video (look out for them!). It's very effective, I think! They later did another video for a second version of the song feature guest vocals from Crystal Lake's then-vocalist, Ryo Kinoshita, but that uses drawn illustrations. In summary, it's rare that I've enjoyed the music of a band this much. I find Spiritbox's music wonderful to listen to - despite the often dark lyrics, I never feel depressed by it, but have waves of goosebumps and often get tears of joy at the expansive choruses and the beautiful touches such as Courtney's soaring belts at the end of Jaded (she's been sparing with these and they were rare until recently - I suspect perhaps due to the now-resolved vocal injury). Her harsh vocals can go lower than the ones in this track, too. I think her clean voice is marvellous - a haunting, ethereal but warm tone, and she sometimes uses her breath to add extra emotional effects to it. Their songs can variously be mixtures of both styles (or more!), but some are all clean, some all-harsh. All highly recommended!
