It would be fair to present this piece as a composition of Rimsky- Korsakov based on music by Moussorgsky and not a piece by him, because the original is radically different

At around 9:22 he seems to be aiming for the Shepard tone.

The orchestra possesses the full blown power of Mozart. If to compare with the orchestra of Hændel and even of Haydn - the difference is striking. The winds, especially in the finale decisively siding off the strings, which makes this concerto unique in this respect too. Beethoven took a lot from the 1st movement to the 1st movement of his 3rd concerto (key, the beginning of the main theme, coda)

Menacing sounds not of the impending storm,, but of the war (with Ottoman Porta?) The final quite clearly implies the military march of exceptionally dark air. There are two episodes, mirroring the two of the 2nd movement, the A-flat with masculine and c/C with feminine tone (two children, a girl and a boy?) The very end of the final is the farewell. So - what is it? Life and the inevitable departure to the war of a young officer, leaving behind his wife and kids?

In a letter to the the Archduke Rudolph, who once asked him to sent him these miltary marches for the use in a manouvre, Beethoven made pretty funny remarks about his marches and wrote ( roughly translated) : "The promised HORSE MUSIC will reach you in the fastest gallop. I hope horsemen and horses will be able to make some crafty roly-polies by it !" 😄

They play it with an A tuned to 415 Hertz, which is frequently done (although not necessarily historically accurate) for baroque works.
@sandwitch61762Күн бұрын
@@arielorthmann4061To my knowledge everything from 415hz to 450hz was used could be wrong though personally I like baroque instruments tuned to 415hz it's just nicer in sound and the gutstring isn't as stiff, just my preference.
@arielorthmann4061Күн бұрын
@@sandwitch61762 yes, some even go a lot lower than 415, like down to 390 at least. What I meant is that the diapason was very variable from times & places, so playing everything at 415 isn't especially right nor especially wrong.
@sandwitch6176218 сағат бұрын
@@arielorthmann4061 That's interesting that some even went down to 390hz. Where did you get that information? I want to learn some more myself.

Back as a college student I wrote a paper on Schumann's first and second violin sonatas, the only ones I knew existed at that time. Later I learned about this piece, which I regard as quite a powerful work in its own right. Also, it's fascinating to see Schumann's own musical handwriting.

Einfach wunderbar!
