I am mid way through the engine removal for my NC did you have to remove the steering column, I gave unbolted it and was dropping the engine out and it seemed to get stuck and cant find any vids online of people doing it edit: watching it now I see you had the same thoughts that itd just drop out, how did u manage to disconnect it while dropping the engine, cos mine seems to get stuck on the metal taking it into the cockpit of the car and I feel that I am just going to bend it if I try to drop the engine down more
@KeepEmRunnin9Ай бұрын
Yes we had exact same issue. We found it was actually caught on the plastic cooling duct on the side of the alternator. Doing again I'd take alternator out then drop. Steering column should just detach fine then. Presume your right hand drive same as us? Most vids are LHD which is why they never mentioned it. We mention on the removal vid and again when we reinstalled. On the reinstall we had to remove the 4 bolts on the steering rack to get room to push back on to the column splines. You should notice the alignment mark on the yellow collar to help get exact alignment back. Good luck and let us know how you get on!
@earl8590Ай бұрын
@@KeepEmRunnin9 ended up just smacking the ball joint off as it was disconnected but just didnt want to come loose, may have bent the steering column in the process of lowering it but thats a problem for another day lmao
@KeepEmRunnin9Ай бұрын
@@earl8590 you'll probably be fine. We feared we'd bent the column as we'd realised there was alot of weight on it but was all good when put back in.

Been waiting for this one well done! positive crankcase ventilation valve (positive pressure) lol! that's a problem you wont have to deal with now and imagine changing that and the small hose with the engine in even the Haynes manual doesn't mention undoing the 22mm nut on the transfer pipe either! (22mm flare nut spanner for that) Did you change the stat? as couldn't see it on the video. Could see you have a five speed box I prefer it to the six speed as having both I get to compare both and notice the difference a lot, six speed is slicker but its a lot of stirring, five speed seems to suit it better but that's just my opinion. Gearbox and diff will benefit from a change with 75w90 synthetic. If you have a low clutch point on the pedal it can be adjusted at the clutch pedal pushrod to bring it a little higher which helps with gearchanges and really does make a difference (after bleeding clutch first). Look forward to seeing what's next ! Thanks for the video diary.👍😊
@KeepEmRunnin9Ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! Positive - yes that make's more sense lol. Learning all the time, won't forget that now. Yeah was a top tip that. Nearly had a major panic with the coolant clip missing... was actually the pipe on top of the stat behind the intake. We managed to get the intake and power steering pump off just enough to get to get the clip on!! Absolutely no way you'd get near the PCV valve that way as you'd said. Was going to put a new stat on but had problem with my eBay account (long story) anyway... figured we knew the one on the original engine was all good so swapped them. We've done gearbox oil and have diff oil on the to-do list. Thanks for another tip on the clutch - that will be useful for sure. Some nice new bits have arrived for next instalment. Hoping to drive her in the sun before end of the weekend if all goes well!
@IfitwerksАй бұрын
@@KeepEmRunnin9 Well done Its all a learning curve, overall pretty good to work on being RWD FYI its the small hose to the PCV valve that splits length ways at about 80=90K did mine with engine in! You wont have that problem now! The best handling & steering car I have ever owned bar none, I personally consider it the best of all the MX5s. If you feel the need to get the geometry set up, do not go to Halfords quick fit etc use a MX5 specialist it shouldn't cost anymore but it will be done properly as they know these cars. Enjoy using it 😊

Always been a fan of MX5s. Had a mk1 for many years and Andy has a mk4. I've always liked the mk3 and don't really get why it's the least popular. I do wish they hadn't done the rx8 inspired front wing haunches but apart from that the best looking and harks back to the mk1 style. Looking forward to some nice drives in the sun. We're already eyeing up the next project car. Got a good mx5 specialist near that races them so alignment will be getting done by him I think

Change the pcv valve and hose while its out, mad not to, costs about £30 for both bits! the hose splits at about 90K and its a pig to do with the engine in, ask me how I know! (sits right below and behind the intake manifold)

@@KeepEmRunnin9 The only known other failure point is the coolant header tank but you can do that anytime, if its yellowed and brittle the neck splits and a overheat is likely, common cause of engine failure on these, Oh, and I recommend the upgraded dipstick (mk2) as its so much easier to read the oil level as the MK1 is a pain to get a clear indication.

Hey Dylan, its charly. I watched an engine rebuild in zimbabwe. Personally I probably would try and have done that and tried to replace the specific parts. Gonna be honest tho swapping the engine out is a lot less hassle and finicky, less things to go wrong. Save your back and get an engine hoist 😂. I see you've got one already though.
