I actually launched the boat last year and did a couple miles before the drive failed. It moves quite nicely. That prop works best at low rpm. I didn't make it up. I researched it . It also has twin rudders and turns like any other boat.

I'm no engineer but that prop looks a little small to move a couple of hundred kilos of hull around and the prop should be right at the rear otherwise you will need 4 football fields to turn it around, nice try though.

Do you have any more pictures of how you made the pedals and the gearing for the prop? I have a kayak with a center hatch that is exposed to the water and I want to see if I can make a pedal system that can easily drop in and out of that hatch. It wouldn't be nearly as long as yours. Maybe 18" or so from the center of the pedals to the center of the prop.

Hi Muddy Anchor,I have only one question for you: How much the weight of the 8'' and 10 feet long PVC pipe?((((I'm planning to built a rebelcat5 and looking for the perfect pipe. More cubic centimeter but less weight. The best pipe what I've found is about 73 kg and 0,56 cubicmeter, but I'm sure that there's better somewhere. )))))Rgds
@gosexman
@gosexman 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, I used schedule 40 PVC pipe which is quite thick and pretty heavy. I'm not sure what the weight is. If I did it again I would look for a thinner walled pipe.
@robertszel8048
@robertszel8048 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but what means "schedule 40" exactly? Diameter or another? I'm living in Hungary may be our terminus technicus are differ than yours.
@jamesthe-doctor8981
@jamesthe-doctor8981 7 жыл бұрын
Róbert Szél "schedule 40" PVC has a much thicker wall and is much heavier then the thinner PVC Pipe (class 200.) Schedule 80 is even thicker and heavier. I'll list the wall thicknesses and pressure ratings (in psi) of the three types of PVC pipe below. All three examples are 1" diameter pipes... Sched 80: 0.179" (630) Sched 40: 0.133" (450) Class 200: 0.63" (200)

Congratulations on finishing. I can really appreciate all the work you did. I have my own boat projects that are also too big for one person with a full time job running a business. oh well! I did make one smart move I found and bought one of my dream boats ( since I did not have time to build a rescue minor). I got a diesel launch www.dropbox.com/s/tvb4f2onc6cf82g/gull%20of%20%20bristol.png?dl=0 It's a 1970 "Gull of Bristol ". Pilot 15 , designed by C.Raymond Hunt . But not as fast as his other designs nor your Rescue Minor. I discovered over the years that small inboard boats are very rare l assume because when the engines cause trouble the cost of repair or replacement is probably prohibited compared to a cheap outboard motor option. My boat was lucky to have been re-engined in 1990 with a Westerbeke 18hp diesel. Keep yours in good running condition and it should last a life time! Would love to see some photos / video of you 'Minor running when you have time.. Cheers Warren

Don't understand why people waste their time and Money on PVC pontoons. Look around lots of catamaran sail boats around , dirt cheap some free . Start with good floats, then put your silly ideas on that
@gosexman
@gosexman 9 жыл бұрын
Mazda rx7 It cost a whopping $100 for the PVC. It floats good enough. Its the adventure of designing something youself and you don't have to get rid of all the left over junk that someone else was stuck with

How did you attach the wood boards to the PCV pipes? It looks like you bolted them down. I wanted to see if it is air tight, so it will give me some idea on how to attach a floor to the pontoons.
@TheIsmaelIsaac
@TheIsmaelIsaac 8 жыл бұрын
+Melvin Colvin .. I really don't know if you can avoid the board thing by simply making T joints to attach 6 or 8" PCV pipes to go across the two 10" pipes.

I hope to answer some of your questions. It's 8" PVC pipe by ten feet long. It easily carried my weight at 160 lbs. On the test drive a pedal broke off and I limped back to the dock. I dropped my cell phone in the water when I launched the boat and subsequently had a fight with them camera man (wife) over the lost phone. (She doesn't understand the concept of "it's insured"). So there is no video! The boat went into storage while I built my next boat, a twenty foot center console with inboard diesel. Watch the videos of" Building Rescue Minor" on the gosexman channel. Sorry I don't have more pictures of the drive mechanism. It's home made with gears and chain. The model airplane propeller is the proper choice for such low RPMs. Boat propellers are designed for thousands of RPMs. I hope to relaunch this summer 2014. I must redesign the chair. The angle is wrong for incumbent pedaling. I may add a sail or a kite for fun.

A word of advice, you want some means of draining that PVC pipe... Although it may be 100% sealed, PVC is NOT 100% water proof, and it's easier to get some in there than it is to get some out..
