Sometimes, with lighter tippet... you need to make sure you cinch them slow and really lubricate or the heat will compromise the knot.

@mendtheline88
@mendtheline88 4 ай бұрын
So it’s the same knot, just not threaded through the eye. Instead you nearly complete the knot, but place the loop over the hook, and then cinch down.

Hey thanks for that I’ve just got into fly fishing again I know what I’m doing but I always end up with kinks in my leader and especially down beside my fly hook we’re it’s all curled up as it hits the water cann you give me some advice on how to keep my whole leader straight especially at the hook end as I guess it messes with the presentation as it did with me last night saying that the water was very low & clear I’m also unsure of what dries to use & size for wild browns over here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 hope you can help thanks in advance Tight lines ✌🏼💙🎣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍🏼 ps I use an 8ft 4W rod so what length of leader should I use 🤷🏼‍♂️ thanks again 👍🏼🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I find that if you cinch the knot slowly it tends to kink less. Also pulling the tippet through pressed fingers tends to straighten it out (or using a leader straightener but I find my thumb and finger works fine). As for dries to use and size, don’t overthink the pattern too much. It’s more about the presentation when fishing low and clear. Keep in mind your first cast is your best opportunity so practice casting at a hole adjacent to where you think they are holding until you have your cast just right and then go for the money shot. I like starting big (size 14/16) and then downsizing if they are really picky. Always have some parachute Adams, elk hair cassis, and smaller stimulators. For leader length, I try not to exceed the length of my rod (so 8’ in your case). That way you don’t get hiccuped in the guides too much. Enjoy and hope you land some browns!

A while ago, you posted a gear review about your umpqua chest pack. Is your camera rig still the same where you used the velcro strap to mount your GoPro on the chest pack? I am curious because the pov style looks really cool and I want to record some of my trout fishing.

I've been doing this for decades...no need to pinch the end of the twist, it wants to stay twisted, you can just let the fly drop down, it will stay there waiting for you to finish. With practice it doesn't take longer than 5 or 6 seconds, and you can do the same move with a dropper section of tippet around the bend of the top fly hook or just twist up the loop in the tippet and catch it on the hook bend.
@mendtheline88
@mendtheline88 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, very true, I hardly pinch and this movement is so second nature I bet I could do it in half the time of this video now lol.

Thanks for this. The old school look is fun. What reel to you recommend with it? I'll be fishing small streams in New Mexico. Mostly small trout but would like something that can pick up the occasional 20+ incher. You think this would do?

May want to go graphite and save this for smaller creeks. 20” would be the max a 3wt would be able to take for this rod. Thanks and keep fishing:)

I do love that boat, but not a fan of that higher seating position, but love the swivel seat. I know they're extremely stable. I purchased my Oldtown Spirtman 106, with the Minnkota. For me at 5ft 7 155 lbs, it's perfect. I cover large lakes, and resevoirs. With a 100 AH ithium battery. She goes all day long. And I just received my Bixpy J2, which will be more of a slow trollerbaround spots, and paddling to stay in shape. Be safe bro 🙏 😎 fishing 🎣

Dude, you just changed my life. I’ve never had an issue with knots, ever, but I recently lost my index finger on my dominant hand. It has been so incredibly hard to just tie knots now, and I’ve never seen this. I’ve fished my entire life, and the sad thing is that I use this method to tie extended dry fly bodies on extremely small patterns but never thought to use it to tie my clinch knot. Thanks again buddy!

Good review and nice to see someone championing glass rods. I started off with glass rods in the late 70s and they definitely still have their place. I fish small tree-lined streams in Shropshire, UK where short, delicate presentations are sometimes necessary. The flexibility protects a lighter tippet well. I have an Echo 6ft9 3weight and a Sunray 8ft 1weight (the only company I’ve seen that make a rod in this configuration). Both are a delight to fish with. Keep on doing the videos.
