A friend of mine had one of these recti-formers as a child. He said that before it came to him, it had been modified with a full-wave bridge rectifier to replace the tube. It's unfortunate that new tubes aren't plentiful and cheap, that blue glow is way cool!! If/when the tube goes, you can probably replace it with a solid state alternative.
@MygrandpasTrainКүн бұрын
Yep, I built a custom rectifier control box that I use with an 8B; so I should not use the tube much. The camera does not do justice to how the glow appears, but you get the idea.

Cool intro to this video. Is “Chicken Beek” a common description of a control handle or is it your terminology? Either way, I could immediately visualize what it would look like.
@MygrandpasTrainКүн бұрын
I think the correct term is "chicken head" actually and is a common name for a type of control knob shape.

Nice mountain train. I like how the billboard train cruised by other billboard cars on the siding.
@ronalddevine95872 күн бұрын
Was this over engineered or what? I live in the New Haven area, and had many family members who worked at AC Gilbert, and I can almost promise you that the handle was not made by Gilbert. They most likely used a plastic handle.
@MygrandpasTrain2 күн бұрын
Every other example I've seen has a plastic handle. I do wonder how long the tube will last, they are not easy to come by and not cheap. But, I can also attest that the model 14 and 16 are identical. I'll make a follow up on that later!

@@MygrandpasTrain, I saw your video about rebuilding an electronic horn. Have you finished it? After watching your video I was inspired to rebuild my own unit. Did you find smaller capacitor values? If you still need them. I can share my part list that I rebuilt it

EVERYONE in our neighboorhood of Morton, PA in Delaware County and beyond had American Flyer trains EXCEPT us! My brothers modeled HO & I modeled N. In 2009 l got started in S Gage and have NO intention of modeling ANY other scale. l'm working on a TOTALLY open grid layout where ALL the track will be on risers to resemble the REAL THING. FLYER FOREVER.😃 Should you care to respond, l would prefer a hand written letter as l've LIMITED computer access. My address is: MARPLEMAC Box 176 Devault, PA 19432 ....by the way, l WILL write back to those who write me.

When Gilbert first introduced the 4-8-4 locomotive in the late prewar era, it was called The Challenger of the Rails. The name has stuck. I have the prewar unit, and it's probably one of the best pulling locomotives in my collection.

I have this set (No. 20455) with the set box. Lived in Connecticut for 7 years and am heavily into New Haven rolling stock. Gilbert hit its peak in 1958 with several freight sets having eight or more cars. This particular set has nine cars, but no transformer. And the NH Electric is my personal favorite loco. The 21573 came in both shiny and dull finishes. The former came with this freight set while the latter came with the Bankers passenger set in 1959. I even rigged one of my 21573s to draw power through the pantographs. Five-digit items began to appear in 1958, but they still had existing stocks of three-digit cars. Many sets from 1958 had three-digit cars in five-digit boxes until the three-digit stock was used up. Virtually all of these sets came with the 913 GN box car. Only a handful of 24006 cars were ever made.

Excellent idea for a video! 🎉 My brother and I grew up with AF trains, and at one time we had both the 1952 and 1956 catalogs. Both have since disintegrated over time, due to usage and age. Since then, I’ve acquired both a mint 1951 and replacement mint 1956 catalog. The artwork that went into these catalogs were fantastic, eye-catching and very enjoyable to peruse. They were “wish books” to us, growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Much treasured nostalgia, for sure! 🚂❤️🇺🇸

The K5210 set at the bottom of pages 12 and 13 was the first AF train I ever received for Christmas! I still have it some 72 years later. I refurbished it a few years ago and it still runs fine. And I also have that same catalog. The non metal buildings were made by Mini-Craft in 1952 - 53. I believe their factory burned down in 1954. I have most of the Mini-Craft buildings as well.

My Grandpa received the same set for Christmas in 1957! He passed it down to me when I was just a little kid, and I only now recently got it to run for the first time since he last put it away probably 50-something years ago.

They were one of the largest employers in the city of New Haven. At their peak, they employed over 4,000 people. My mom worked there, as did many of my family members on both sides. I addition to what was shown in the catalog, they also made power tools, electric fans, mixers, vacuum cleaners, etc. It was quite a loss to this area when they closed. The buildings still stand.

Very good to know what the quality is like on these reproduction parts... I think I will avoid buying them unless I absolutely have to. Lead is just much too soft for this sort of application, and on top of that I would prefer to avoid having exposed lead castings on my trains wherever possible. Mostly though, I worry about how easily damaged those parts must be. Really not the best quality. I would presume that whoever is manufacturing these parts couldn't justify the investment in tooling required to make new Zamak parts, and opted to use lead so they could cast from home-made rubber molds. Lovely to see this engine running, definitely a model I'd love to have one day. I have the 565 Atlantic and it's quite charming.
@MygrandpasTrain8 күн бұрын
3D printed parts would be of similar durability. I"m considering doing resin castings too. According to @ToyManTelevision casting with Zamak is very difficult. Actually it wasn't bad once I realized it was lead, I handled it differently and it will probably hold up fine. Thanks for watching!

The Pocher model’s coupler was very common in Europe. If you replace it with a Kadee coupler worth the shank at the bottom of the knuckle, it should come to standard night. The flanges on the Pocher are also typical of European models. I have 3 4-4-0s that I purchased from AHM YEARS ago and all 3 have the deep flanges. I believe they were manufactured by Rivarossi. By the way, the model of the V&t “Reno” you have is of the later version. When “Reno” was delivered to the V&T, it was a wood burner, as were all the American locomotives purchased by the V&T. The 3 locomotives modeled by Rivarossi were “Reno”, “Inyo” and “Genoa”. There were others as well the other one that I remember was “Dayton”. All of these locomotives were named after communities served by the V&T. I don’t know why no one has produced the “Dayton”, which the V&T converted to a “plow locomotive”.
