Thanks for the rope information DVD. I have lost a little faith in Stovax, the rear blanking plate just fell out when the fire was cold one day. The steel retaining bracket for it broke in half and the part is now obsolete. I have fabricated one and I am going to seal the plate with some Vitcas fire cement, it never needs to come off. Do you think that I need to use rope along with it or will the cement alone be good enough? Thanks again 👍🏽

Thanks 1 million for your video. Sadly, I had already completely dismantled the baffle which require drilling out several of the screws. Never mind. I have it all in bits now and wondered if you could tell me what size for the ropes I need for the doors and the rear events et cetera if you can that would be fantastic. Many thanks Scott

Great job, bloody impressed. Prevented me undoing a load of unnecessary screws that would have probably sheared. Interesting use of your bradles, not seen that before… I’d be too scared of breaking the bricks. I would be surprised if the User Manual doesn’t recommend regular baffle removal as part of regular maintenance, especially when sweeping.

Good idea curing the rope seal sealant with the blow torch to hold it in place. Self adhesive tape unlikely to hold sufficiently on porous and dusty cast.

I’ve got a panasonic blue-ray…. Freeview HD recorder; in which i bought in 2014. The bad news is… i cannot whatsoever, tune in the freeview channels; So, presumably… i would imagine the capacitor has gone or blown on that too? i honestly don’t think there will be any chance of that being repaired. Most probably will cost a small fortune? The good news is… the recorder still works. But not much use without freeview channels. and also i can still watch a blue-ray movie. 7th December 2022.

Thank you for the video and exceptional skill for making nothing into something useful again! What size/weight are the bags of leca? How tall is the chimney? How many bags of leca did you use? I have some liners coming up and looking for a different insulation option and leca might be an option for me to get away from my traditional insulation. Thank You👍🏻👍🏻
@dickvandike03 жыл бұрын
Hey sorry, I didn't get notification of this question and unusual like to try and be proactive. This job was actually to top -up a chimney with Leca, where the previous installer hadn't filled chimney to the pot and the top part of the liner was condensating. Personally I like to use chimwrap. thx DVD

I'm here because the bearings in my R470 wheels are pretty much shot as well. I've only ridden my bike since brand new about 2500km(1500 miles) and I have to replace the bearings on the freehub body. It's an XDR for SRAM Rival AXS, but at least the repair is easy to do.

dickvandike, this is great tutorial on what is a pig of a job for an amateur. I have done it several times now though you make the removal look easier than it is because of the weight and the reach that is needed,. The bolts do not line up easily and that makes things difficult. I drilled out both my baffle plates (I have two stoves) to give me a little more leeway. But I always struggle. I am extremely grateful to you for taking the time to produce this video. I am nearing 70 now I never remember what I did last year. This video will be invaluable. I have several questions. What are the specifications of the rope seal and what is that adhesive you are using. And does the baffle get filled with dust within itself and consequently need cleaning out. Thanks again
@dickvandike07 жыл бұрын
Hi Del, thanks for your comment, the rope seal is a soft "no inner filling" 6mm and the adhesive is a 350deg silacone, .yes the baffle can get dust in it and its a good idea to hover it out by holding it upwards and placing the hose end on the large vent hole. Glad to be of help all the best DVD

Looks like a right pain in the arse design!! Are all the stovax like this?
I think HETAS states a liner can only be joined where there is access for the joint to be inspected, so in this instance i think you could argue that it can, and therefore complies. My 2 concerns would be 1) that the connector is not secured into the old liner just pushed in, i think i might have poured sloppy cement on the outside to hold it all together. 2) the liner looked very tarry and possibly well on the way to the end of its life, i think I would have insisted on a new liner. The installation is definitely much better now, with vermiculite and the fact that the joint is outside the building i.e just in the stack means chance of Co poisoning is nil.

This video is great. I am in the process of doing this. I have a couple of areas that are up to 10mm between the wall and register plate so I had planned to fill these with fire silicone as it won't be seen. I like your vermiculite/cement method, would this be better? My plate is much smaller and had to be manoeuvred up a tight space so I couldn't use a frame.
@dickvandike07 жыл бұрын
Hi, Im not a great lover of silicone, but yes it will do the job. but not as well as pushing sand/cement/vermiculite into all areas. Thanks for watching DVD.

Great video! Remember standard 12V lights are not suited for vehicle use because of the fluctuating voltages (up to 14.8V). You may find the cheap LED tapes end up fading in light output due to overheating LED chips. Check out these guys at www.britalitez.com for some great lighting suited for vehicle use.

The bar behind the baffle plate has broken and the blanking plate has fallen off the back. Can this circular plate be cemented in as finding replacement bar is proving difficult
@dickvandike08 жыл бұрын
Hi, no it requires the bar, I would recommend buying a new plate and bar combo as the stud/nut will be rusted/broken. www.woodburner-spares.co.uk/stovax-huntingdon-brunel-blanking-plate-clamp.html this is for the bar only so hope this helps.Thanks DVD

hi there we have just had one fitted, but the fitter has not sealed the register plate. does this need to be done as bits keep falling down.
@dickvandike08 жыл бұрын
Hi, A register plate should be air tight, if your chimney was lined, this is called a closure plate, more of a decretive finish but generally sealed, unless specific ventilation is required. thanks DVD

hi I bought a clearveiw 500, in Ireland and the baffle plate bent with the heat within 6 months the fire bricks have allso cracked and I need to replace them already, is this normal, my supplyer is not to helpfull. what do you think. how long should the fire bricks last, the logs I used are from a beach tree that was cut down 2 years, and I dont use coal
@dickvandike08 жыл бұрын
Hello Peter, sorry to hear of your problems. The bricks can sometimes crack quite quickly and with this in mind I always cut the rear brick in half on large bricks and also, I take off a 45° angle at the bottom of the bricks to allow for the seam weld so that the brick fits flat against the back of the stove, this works well and the bricks will last for several years, five years so far on the stove in the video. Regarding the baffle plate, no this should not need replacing for several years and it sounds like it's been over-fired, and a stovepipe or stove thermometer would give you an indication of this. The main reason I find is the door, wrong fuel or if its an inset vision then these are prone to baffle replacments. If you take a look at the video you should be able to light a few sheets of newspaper and extinguish them by shutting the air controls ( unless it has a air vent stop fitted) if this doesn't happen then it is possible that the door may not have been fitted correctly. I would advise you do a paper test on the door seal. Tear off a 2 inch strip of newspaper and trap it between the door and the stove all the way around if you are able to pull out the paper easily then the door maybe fitted incorrectly. And this would allow a lot of extra care into your stove making it uncontrollable, and using a mirror look under the hinges for door for opening wear if you see the paint has been rubbed off this may mean the hinge blockes have rotated and this will put the door out of alignment. Let me know how you get on Thanks DVD

There have been some good questions/comments here so this is my response. The reality is that in the eyes of document J and HETAS the repair I have done to this chimney would be classed illegal. However my own risk assessment of the situation is that I would rather leave it in this condition than the customer continue to use it in the condition that I found it in, and to top it off I first removed a hooded spigot vent top !! My videos are not a glossary advertising media but mainly situations that I think may be interesting to our community but it is important that I make clear what is technically right or wrong as KZbin is a platform available to all. If a manufacturer supplied you with a liner with a joint in it this is perfectly acceptable but if you choose to modify or design change any appliance, componants or flue, then you are liable for the safety of this work. Recently I was called to a customer’s house to repair a recently installed appliance. The flue pipe had completely fallen off the back of the stove. The installer had chosen not to screw any of the components together or to the stove collar but instead make up an angle iron bracket to support the T piece and flue to the hearth, this had subsequently fallen away and all the vitreous pipe had detached itself from the appliance. Making up your own components that have not been tried or independently tested by the manufacturer is also illegal. This also applies to the videos where I cut a hole in existing flue pipe to access the chimney The correct procedure would be to remove the flue pipe and replace it with a pipe with an access door in it. The stark reality is I visited six properties yesterday and every stove installation was illegal. I would love to take a moral high ground and not sweep/service any illegal installation but the truth is I would be out of work.!!! HETAS is soon to release a risk assessment form, this is what we do every single day as sweeps and installers. Assess the risk and choose what action is to be taken to ensure that the occupants of the property remain safe during use of the appliance. Thanks for watching and happy sweeping !!
