Oh my goodness! You are right, it is 3.6cm. This is a mistake in my measurement. Thank you for pointing that out. I'll add a note for correction.

Yes. In that case, at both boundaries (air to glass, glass to air), the incident angle is zero and refracted angle is zero. So the path of the light ray would be in a straight line with no deviation.

Using a slide potentiometer will be a different experiment studying different variables. The slide potentiometer is used to change the voltage or current of the circuit, but cannot be used to change the length of the wire. So it cannot be used in this particular circuit; it would be in a different type of circuit to investigate different variables.
